Aria quieted down at what he said but still thought that the way he said it and the suddenness of it was funny.

Theodore couldn't maintain his scowl. "I might be a failing author, but I'm not an alcoholic. Yet. In fact I don't like alcohol very much at all."
"I didn't think that you were an alcoholic," Aria said wondering where he would get the idea that she had thought that he was a drinker.
(he made the joke about alcoholism not being funny?)"Well good. Because I'm not. But, y'know, drive is a long way. So what do you want to talk about?"
(oh okay)"I don't know. Why did you want to be a writer?" she asked him not really knowing what else to ask.
"To tell a story." Theodore shrugged. "I started as a journalist, kind of. You?"
"One day I was writing a short story for a class and the teacher said that it would make a good book so I decided that I wanted to be an author," Aria explained.
"Wow. Inspirational." Theodore didn't know what he expected, but it was more than that. "No overcoming hardships or a touching tale of childhood disability or anything?"
"Nope. Just a plain story," Aria said back shaking her head. Her wanting to write was pretty boring but it didn't matter why she wanted, its that she was able to be successful and like doing it.
"No like... explosions? Or dragons? Alright... then, what uh, inspired you?"
She smiled and said, "I was tired to hearing and reading stories where the prince says the damsel in distress so I wanted to change it. I know, still boring."
"It's. Eh." Theodore shrugged. "Could be worse."
Aria asked, "What inspired you?"
"Now? Other books. Movies. Games. I guess. It used to be, well... I write straight fiction now, so, I guess a paycheck."
Aria nodded thinking that he should write what he wants and someday someone will like it but she didn't think that he would want to hear that.
Theodore sighed, again. "Although, since I do fully expect to be murdered far before we make it to Washington, and this is the closest to a polite interview I'll get. I used to be a war correspondent."
Aria nodded agreeing that they might get caught. Then she thought about his old job and thought that he had seen some bad stuff while he worked. "How long?" she asked him.
"Two years. But, split up. I followed the tours of duty of the four-forty-second in Afghanistan."
"Thats pretty long," Aria said impressed that he was able to do that job that long. She didn't even like to watch the news because of the violence.
"Well it was two six-month deployments with six months between." Theodore shrugged. "I uh... I don't qualify for service. So I did the next best thing, I guess."
Aria nodded and asked, "I hope you don't mind me asking but did you mind leaving? or would you have wanted to stay?"
"Eh. It kinda got to a point, y'know... They got tired of dragging my ass around, and the fighting picked up during the second employment. It wasn't tactically viable to have some scrawny kid with a videocamera anymore. I liked what I was doing, but I wouldn't try to do it again."
Aria said, "At least you liked it while you were doing it." She didn't know what else to say about his old job. She didn't have any jobs expect her writing so she was unused to the idea of having to work for someone.
"They're who I wrote my first book about. There and Back Again, that is. And I guess I still wasn't original then because I just ripped off the Hobbit's title."
"I guess that it is a common title. Its doesn't mean that you ripped it off of another book," she said.
"They're who inspired all the Xiang-Ki-Shek in Starbomb."
"That's cool. That's how the characters were so realistic," she said.
"...yeah. Well I mean they're 'realistic' because some of them have tried to kill us. But also that."
Aria laughed and said, "I didn't think about it that way but that's true."
"I try not to think about it at all."
Aria smiled and stopped talking about that subject.
"So. Do you try to base anything on real people?"
"I mix some people that I know into my characters. I try to make them like normal people which is why I include characteristics of my friends but not enough so they are the same person," she said.
"I suppose I do the same. Afterall the Xiang are in space and practice an MMA that the real military doesn't."
Aria nodded. It would be hard to not base a character on someone you didn't know, she thought to herself.
Theodore opened his mouth as if to continue speaking, but he had nothing more to say about the matter. He let the cabin drift back into silence, choosing to focus on the road rather than keeping a conversation going.Twenty minutes later, they were almost out of the city. "You think they have the resources to close the roads?"
Aria sat in the silence but then was startled when he finally broke it. "Who?" she asked him, "The Tsung?"
"Yeah. Obviously the local police don't have an issue with them shooting two people on live television, so it wouldn't be too much of a leap to assume they can use department resources to close the highway."
"They probably could," she said thinking. "Let's just hope that they don't. Should we only take back roads then?" she asked him. It wouldn't be good to get caught on the highway since they are being looked for.
"There are no 'back roads' leaving a major city, even in the mid-west. Thank Eisenhower."
"Oh, that's annoying," she said disappointed since they would have been more helpful right then.
"I guess it's a small price to pay for emergency evacuation in the face of nuclear disaster." Theodore shrugged. "We'll deal with it when we get to it, I guess."
"Okay," Aria said before looking out the window but now she was worrying about getting found from closed roads.
"If there's a traffic stop, and they go car-to-car... I, well, do you think they know what we look like?"
"They might. I'm not sure. They could have seen us when they attacked us when we were switching cars," she said.
"But if they didn't take any pictures, what does it matter?"
"Nothing I guess," she responded.
"...they have worse. They probably have video. The Tsung often have video recordings of their operations. They make some really fucked up promotional videos out of shooting people."
Aria grimaced at what he was saying as she pictured what they had done to the people who had helped them and making it a video.
"...as you can imagine, the Tsung are inspired by modern-day terrorists. The only differences are, they're better trained, funded, and winning."
