Staring off June 46/75 (+15), so will likely increase my goal come September. No short stories read in May—must do better in June.
How are you doing on your goals?
How are you doing on your goals?

Suzanne — Isn’t it nice to be so far ahead of your goal?
Paula — Sorry to hear of your difficulties. Looks like you’re doing well in your challenge, considering.
Linda — Yay for large cushions in challenges!
Teresa — Good job catching up!

Sorry to hear Paula - I hope you improve soon. Take care.

Thank you, Brenda.

I’m starting July with 58/75 books, which puts me ahead by twenty-one, so I will definitely be increasing my goal this fall. Also, after reading zero short stories in May, I read 34 in June, most by Guy de Maupassant. So definitely back on track there.
In other non-group challenges, I am currently 19/50 for PopSugar (goal of 25-30) and I am at 28/52 for Around the Year. I am also doing well in challenges for the Classics group I’m in here at GR. I have one book to read this month for the Member’s Choice challenge, have completed the Group/Buddy Reads Challenge, and need seven books for a blackout bingo (I already have two regular bingos and the four corners).

It's good to be ahead of my goal.

Way to go, Teresa!
Brenna — Glad to hear you are out of the slump!
Paula — Two behind isn’t bad. Good luck with your challenges and catching up!

End of the month check-in time. I hope everyone has made good progress in their GR or other challenges.
For Goodreads I am now 65/75, 22 books ahead. Since I have been averaging 8-10 books a month, I will definitely be increasing my goal as we head into autumn.
I read 27 short stories in July, for a grand total of 88 so far this year. I am at 20/50 in PopSugar (I am not expecting to finish this year—my goal is 30, so I think I’m on track there) and I am at 34/52 for ATY challenge.

For my GR goals, I'm at 172/300, 3 books behind schedule. I didn't get much of a chance to read at the beginning of the summer, but am not concerned. I'll be able to catch up easily.

Linda — Looking good!
Julesy — Three behind isn’t too bad and I have no doubt you’ll catch up fast.
Brenna — Excellent progress!
Teresa — Look at you go! You’ll finish your year-long challenge before I will!

Samantha — You can do it! I know you can get at least another fifty in!
Christene Paula — Congrats on meeting your original goal and good luck with your extended goal!

Ahh…September! We’ve just survived what I hope will be our last heat wave of the year. I’m looking forward to cooler, more comfortable weather as we enter autumn.
I have just meet my original GR goal of 75, and have increased it to 100, which I think I will exceed if I maintain my monthly average of nine books. So, currently at 75/100, plus eight.
I read 32 short stories in August, for a grand total of 120. That may be slowing down a bit the rest of this year. I am also at 25/50 for PopSugar (goal of at least 30) and 39/52 for ATY, so acceptable progress there.
Your turn — how are you doing with your Goodreads Challenge?

ACK!!! Did I really forget to do an October and the November check-in? 🫣
I finished September with ten books, which would have put me at 84/100. I only read seven short stories in September, plus three novellas.
My October stats were eight books, nineteen short stories, and one novella.
As of today, mid-November, I am at 94/100, only seven ahead. I haven’t been home on my days off this month, which cuts into reading time. 🫤 I’m currently two-thirds into one print book, only 26 percent on a Kindle book, and have three or four more slated for the month. 🤞
I hope everyone else is on track for completing their Goodreads Challenge!

I still have over 40 books planned for this month, so I should finish with at least 300. This was an unusual year, I don't expect to keep up this many in future years.

In addition to many mysteries, there are also quite an assortment of quick reads (children's books, short stories & novellas).
November was not a good reading month. I only finished six books, with two still in progress — one in print (25%) and one on my Kindle (50%). I hoped to not only finish these two, but one other book for a group read. Alas, life (and friends) had other plans. It’s hard to get any real reading done when you’re not at home. I also read five short stories.
As of December 5, I am 100/100 — GR challenge complete! I’m still eight books ahead, which in theory should mean finishing at least that many books by end of the year. Quelle coincidence — there are eight books on my December TBR, plus one reread if I get to it (I read this month’s Christie group read in 2016, but do not remember anything about it).
It’s so hard not to be distracted this time of year. 2024 challenges have been announced, which means planning which ones to do as well as writing up tentative reading lists. There are holiday events and Christmas movies and community activities.
Plus, I finally replaced the malfunctioning Nook this week and I’ve been familiarizing myself with it. There are new features I like, but also a couple things I don’t. I like that you can now set it so it doesn’t automatically download new content, allowing me to decide what I want downloaded (which for right now is basically huge anthologies and box sets, as well as some holiday books). What’s really time-consuming is resetting all my shelves. There are a dozen on my old device and so far I’ve only recreated half of them (the smaller ones).
Anyway — here’s hoping everyone has a spectacular finish for the year!

I guess that's when being an insomniac and an audiobook addict with an engrossing cross-stitch project (and not having to go to work every day) can be an advantage. For the past several months, I've been averaging a book (or more) every day and a half. Hubby has asked if the books run together, or if I forget the stories by getting through so many each week, but that's not the case. Yes, I have trouble remembering plotlines after a month or so, but that's been a problem for years :)
Barb — Yes, the J-O-B definitely gets in the way of reading, and it’s not always possible on breaks, depending on who else may be in the break room and how considerate of others they are. I do try to read before bed, but there are some nights when I only get a page or two in and I’m falling asleep — but then there are also times I wake in the middle of the night and end up reading for an hour or two because I can’t get back to sleep.
My best reading year ever was in 1995, when I read 217 books. That’s about 1-1/2 books a day. I read 185 in 1996, and 173 in 1997 — and then it drops to 113 in 1998. The early 2000s were not so great (50 or fewer/yr), but I’ve usually been between 100-120 the last decade or so.

It might help you to remember for longer if you jot down a few words, like a short review. That's what I've found helps me to remember - I only need to read the words I've written for it to come back to me :) Just a suggestion Barb.

That was one advantage in working at our local public library a while back - everyone respected an open book and knew to leave you alone if you were trying to read :)
