No supernatural creatures in it, only a family who has magic abilities. Each member has abilities, but I don't remember if they can be the same or if each member is different. The main character, a male in either his late teen years or early twenties, has the ability to use the first ten(?) songs he hears each day to perform a tarot-like reading to predict the future.
One of the books, the second I think, was released after mid-1987 since there is a scene where the main character isn't surprised his girlfriend(?) left him since he heard REM's "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" but had forgotten the second part of the title.
The main character has a crutch at some point he decorates with RPG miniatures.
The main character is an orphan, whose parents were killed in a car wreck. He was upset that he didn't figure out the song titles were pointing to a bull which would have helped him understand his parents driving a Ford Taurus when the wreck happened.
The same crutch is later used to kill a cousin(?) by mistake because the aunt(?) blessed the cousin to only be killed by a tiny silver sword thrust into his head and one of the miniatures has this item.
