Yes, I am not a fan of Highsmith, so I suppose I substituted Bowen in my own mind!

I suspect one of the reasons Fremlin fell out of fashion was that her books are both very female and very British. I doubt they travelled well.

A quick look at my shelf shows me I currently have 3 books by male authors and 3 by female authors on the go. That sounds about right, but I am currently trying to read lots of authors who are going to a crime festival that I am visiting in the summer, so that is swaying my general reading towards a certain genre.

I do know that RC is currently reading Mick Herron at the moment - who will also be at the said festival again and which I am very excited about!

I'm always here for more Fremlin but need to check whether I have Appointment with Yesterday - I definitely have Spider-Orchard from my Oxfam Fremlin-grab!

WndyJW I did miss The Long Shadow so I’d like to read that next.

I just ordered The Spider-Orchid and The Long Shadow, and Uncle Paul, so I’m ready for upcoming reads.

There are new editions of some of Fremlin's books coming out, with more colourful covers.

I downloaded Appointment with Yesterday and will read that one next, as I want to stick to the order. I don't mind reading it as a personal read if we want to skip to Spider-Orchard.

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 802 comments I also intend to stick to the order

Why couldn't they have come out a bit earlier. Sigh. Hey, I'm planning on reading my used and not very colorful edition of Appointment With Yesterday by Celia Fremlin Appointment With Yesterday, in September as planned.

Roman Clodia | 12026 comments Mod
I think I'm the only one without a copy of Appointment With Yesterday so please go ahead as planned with this and I'll either skip it and rejoin on the next, or I may have got a copy by September.

WndyJW Who is publishing the new colorful editions of Fremlin?

Susan | 14232 comments Mod
Still Faber & Faber, WndyJW. Presumably just another imprint of Faber Finds. On the plus side, they must be doing well in order to get the interest from the publisher?

The above is £5.99 on kindle, rather than the £7.99 Faber Finds. I'm SOOOOOO tempted. I know, I already have it......

Uncle Paul is on NetGalley if anyone missed that one?

Brian E Reynolds | 1129 comments Blackwells has that edition of Uncle Paul Uncle Paul by Celia Fremlin available to pre-order for $11.20 on June 29th 2023.

The Faber site has it available for pre-order too https://www.faber.co.uk/product/97805... but you might want to look at the page just to see a picture of an older Fremlin. If they publish a series like this new Uncle Paul then I may start buying the new editions.

I actually like the edition I already have Uncle Paul by Celia Fremlin as there's about 5 of them with similar covers.

WndyJW I love the cover! So much better than the boring white Fabre Finds.

WndyJW I don’t know if I should stop buying old copies on eBay and wait for F&F to reprint more of her titles.

Those white Faber Finds do seem like a 1950s Soviet-bloc issued series -similar and sterile - but I wish they chose to redo the ones like Possession and The spider-Orchid that currently only have those white and read covers rather than ones like Uncle Paul, The Hours Before Dawn, The Jealous One, The Trouble Makers and The Long Shadow that also already had a more popular edition with a better cover. I presume the next ones they choose for the new covers will be one of those titles.

A bigger problem with the Faber Finds is that not only are they sterile-looking and expensive here in the States. it is difficult to locate and purchase them. Faber sells them through bookstores they link to on their site and when I attempted that, the only dealers who have them don't ship to the U.S.
From my experience, a better title for the series would be: "Hard to Find Fabers"

WndyJW I’ve gotten mine on e-bay, Brian. I was hoping McNally was reprinting Fremlin, their reprints of old classics are stunning! The Feast by Margaret Kennedy

Brian E Reynolds | 1129 comments I liked the Faber and Faber edition of The Feast that I used for the Group Read on here: The Feast by Margaret Kennedy It looks good with Uncle Paul by Celia Fremlin Faber & Faber's new cover for Uncle Paul

WndyJW I thought the same thing when I was looking for the McNally. That copy of The Feast is striking.

Yes, the new McNally also looks good with the new Uncle Paul:
The Feast by Margaret Kennedy Uncle Paul by Celia Fremlin as does this one The Feast by Margaret Kennedy
My problem with the McNally Feast is that the cover's title/author rectangle has a cream background, black lettering and deep-red lines that is the exact coloring of the Soviet-style Faber Finds Fremlin covers I hope get replaced: The Feast by Margaret Kennedy Uncle Paul by Celia Fremlin

WndyJW I don’t mind the cream rectangle since the rest of the books looks nice, but I agree the Faber The Feast is the best. Ha! I just realized the Faber edition of The Feast is the one I have! I got mine from World of Books and they thoughtfully put a “Book Bandage” sticker that says “pesky price sticker underneath” over a spot where some of the cover peeled off on the back cover at the bottom.

WndyJW Oh, no! I just saw that I ordered the old white F&F copy of Uncle Paul. I just wrote order Uncle Paul on June 29 on my calendar, but when I checked my email to see if I had received the books I’ve ordered I saw that I already ordered Uncle Paul.
I’ll give the white F&F away and order the lovely new copy for myself.

Publishers know what they’re doing reprinting books with more modern or vintage covers! I am one of their target audience of bibliophiles who want their shelves to look nice.
