Ouch, I feel for Rus! I rarely get stung, the last time was when I'd brought a load of washing in from the line and dumped it on a chair. A while later I'd forgotten it was there, sat down without looking and, you guessed it - got stung by a very indignant wasp who'd just managed to struggle his way to the air! My bum cheek swelled to twice it's normal size. Pete rushed me to the doctor who treated me ..... eventually, when he'd managed to control his laughing 😏

Roz | 4528 comments This year is not starting out well, Back in January I went to a meeting in our community clubhouse. Someone decided to use a folded over doormat as a door stop to keep the door open. (no one is owning up, but I have some suspects) The lighting was poor and I caught my foot in the exposed loop and went down. To protect my knee replacement I braced myself on my left arm. To add insult to injury, people tried to "help" me up by pulling on the arm. A visit to the ER founf nothing broken but the rotator cuff torn, everything that should have been attached, was torn away.
So, I had arthroscopic surgery this past Tuesday, and I'll be in a large sling for 6 weeks, with physio starting after 2 weeks. I can deal with the pain, it's the other stuff. One handed dressing, undressing, (forget about a bra!), hygeine/showering/bathroom stuff, eating, all of it. Simple things like using a knife or opening a bottle of water, child safe pill bottles. I'm going to teach my hubby how to blow dry my hair. No driving.
Then today my hubby tested positive for Covid. Yay!!!!!

Kristie | 19137 comments Oh no, Roz. That really is a bad start to the year. Hopefully, that's the worst of it and things start getting better for you.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Oh Roz! What a start to the year!

I hope you are healing up well, and you aren't in too much pain now. I'm always amazed how much we take our movement and all our limbs and appendages for granted, until we can't use one. I do look forward to hearing all your innovations, but how incredibly frustrating.

I hope your husband has a very mild case and heals quickly as well. Exactly what you both do not need right now.

Fiona | 1148 comments Oh no Roz, I hope you and your hubby will be alright soon!

My mom had surgery on her wrist 2-3 years ago and she couldn’t use her right arm for almost a year. It sounds dumb but you get used to it after a while and with a little help, everything is possible! The best wishes for you :)

Oh Roz, what an unfortunate and entirely preventable accident! It sounds like your life will be turned upside down for some time. Sending big (but very careful) hugs.

So, here's what I've learned so far:
1. Wear loose pull on pants. No zippers or ties. Slip on shoes.
2. Don't wait until you "really" have to "go". it takes a while to undress and you may be too late.
3. Use your thighs to hold bottles so you can unscrew/screw on the tops,
4. It's easier to sleep in a chair with your feet on an ottoman. A recliner would be better but I don't have one.
5. Wear oversized shirts. I wear T-shirts and slip the sleeve all the way up my injured arm first, head through the hole, then my good arm. Buttons are too much trouble.
6. My shower has a built in seat (good) and a hand held spray attachment (good). A bidet would be useful too, but I don't have one. And a blow dryer can be used to dry hard to reach areas.
7. You need someone to do up your bra. Once it's on, leave it there until your next shower.
8. Hair. My hubby holds the blow dryer while I use the brush. Awkward, not the best so unless you have hair that can dry naturally with just a brushing, wear a hat.
9. Cutting food for prep or eating can be hard so use precut veggies, bit sized pieces of meat. And it's okay to have ice cream for dinner if you add fruit.
10. Stop taking pills as soon as possible.

My husband's doing fine. It' just like a bad cold, not like the last time we had Covid. He'll retest at the end of the week.

Thanks for all the happy thoughts. Just one more life event to keep me from being bored.

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments You've made quite a study about it, Roz! I hope it will get better soon.

I've got my first exam tomorrow. I finally gave myself a kick in the butt, but I've planned 14 exams in the following months until the end of June. For some I still need to open my courses.
Damn performance anxiety...

You have a lot on your plate, Saar. Good luck with your exams.
Insult was just added to injury. I now have Covid. My mother always said everything comes in threes. Maybe if I hide under the bed, that third thing won't find me.

message 169: by Fiona (new)

Fiona | 1148 comments Good luck Saar!

And oh no Roz, get well soon! Fingers crossed that the third thing is afraid of the dark and won’t get you under the bed!

Kristie | 19137 comments Some happy "news" from my home - Last year, we sold the furniture in one of our spare bedrooms because we didn't need it any more and I was able to make it into a craft room. I've been enjoying it, but still missing my library that we used to have in our old house years ago. Then, my books somehow started overflowing my bookshelves and creeping into the craft room. It was slowly turning into a craft room-library that was getting pretty cluttered. A few days ago, Craig suggested that we sell our dining room set because it was another room that we no longer use now that we don't live near family. Kind of sad... but then we decided to make it into a library sitting room. Craig posted all the furniture online and it sold right away, so now I have a space to make into my little library again! I'm really excited and enjoying looking into ideas for some new bookshelves and a cozy sitting area. :)

That sounds so awesome! I wish I could do the same. I only have a one room apartment though and most of my books are still at my parents' house.

We have no family living near us, so the rooms that were useful before just aren't anymore. However, having a craft room and a library, my home will really be my happy place and I may never leave it again!

Fiona | 1148 comments I wanted to go out and grab some snacks but my car suddenly doesn’t work anymore. My neighbor tried to help me jumpstart the car but it didn’t work. Now (after I cried like a baby) I’m sitting here and I’ve got no idea what to do. My family and friends live on the other end of the country, my neighbor who knows a bit about cars is out of town and I’m scared that I have to get a new car. Sure, could just be the battery but my car is 20 years old and maybe it’s starting to fall apart now. I definitely don’t have any money for a new car. Ugh

message 195: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments There's always a fine line between having a car payment and keeping the cost of an older car on the road. I can understand wanting to avoid the payment as long as possible.

message 196: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Oh Fiona, that sucks. Does the car click and make a noise when you turn the key and just not start? If that happens, that's the battery. If there is no noise that could be something else, but still may not be expensive to fix.

I'm not sure how it works in Germany, so please bear with my fumbling explanation of what i mean - Do you have an emergency repair service you pay a membership fee to that can come and have a look at your car on the side of the road? We have one who I used to avoid calling, until a lovely older gentleman who came to charge my battery gave me a good lecture about that was exactly why I pay a fee and to call them even when I was unsure to call them. I'd already paid for it, so do it.

Over the years they've replaced two batteries, charged me a couple of times (I can jump the car but I was away from anyone who could help), replaced a flat tyre, rescued me when my fan belt fell off (that was fun), checked out a very weird rattling noise, and when I was away last December down the coast and drove over a branch and ripped my undercarriage guard off so it was dragging along the road he fixed that and discovered I was almost out of oil and coolant thanks to the pandemic so then I didn't run out of oil halfway down the highway getting home.

I know America and the UK have a similar service, so why I mention it. And if you have that service in Germany, i'm trying to be that lovely old mechanic to you :)

message 197: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments That's so frustrating Fiona. I hope it's nothing serious. Fingers crossed that it's something like the battery or the starter.

message 198: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Roz, I am impressed with your study so far! I look forward to the next installment. And I think we should all think about what you have learnt and apply to our normal lives just in case - particularly ice cream for dinner :D

Seriously though, I hope you are healing up and it's not too frustrating for you. And I am sorry to hear you have covid now too, again hope it's mild for you both and goes quickly.

message 199: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Good luck with the exams, Saar.

And I think we are all reading your posts with jealously, Kristie ;) But it's lovely you guys are making your home fit you and what you want. It's what we all want to achieve!!

message 200: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments Rus, I did find out a few things concerning bras, Pre-injury there were times I'd put my bra on backwards (doing it up in the front and twisting it around to the front), Now I need the hubby's help and he has so much trouble, doing up and unhooking, I'm starting to wonder what his teenage dating life was like, if you know what I mean.
Pills: Child safe tops are impossible to open 1 handed. Either you need someone to give you your pills, or ask the pharmacist for easier packaging.
