Barbara "Cookie" wrote: "Is America becoming Nazi Germany? When we start banding books, what’s the next banding people?"To be clear, the books are "banned" at certain SCHOOL libraries only. There are a group of crazy people who think that kids need to be protected from their version of "smut." (I don't think they are totally wrong based on the age of the children. More than once, I've had parents ask me if I thought a book I reviewed was appropriate for their gifted child or grandchild who reads above their grade level.) Carefully reviewing books before they are added to the school library is not a "Florida only" policy. I lived in extremely liberal Maryland and Pennsylvania. They also limited the books in the school library.
Some public libraries are shared with schools. In those cases, they already have policies in place so students don't take the "adult" books unless a parent or guardian are with them. They are not prevented from reading/borrowing any books with a parent present or with a parent's permission.
Since the first "chad" debacle.," I think the media loves to dump on Florida Yes, there are some radical religious groups who get carried away, but normally it doesn't last long unless the national media parses information to fit their agenda. Right now the agenda is to prevent DeSantis from running/winning/ or whatever to be President.
Jonetta, there is a committee to review the complaints. However, anyone can pull books and put them on the "to be reviewed" list. I don't know how that works, but the big issues are in Duvall County, not the entire state. I suspect that many of the people on the committee are also making the complaints.
Sharon, I appreciate your thoughtful, measured and insightful comments. They make a difference and I’m glad you’re here to add that perspective.
Your governor isn’t doing your state any favors or helping the situation. His voice is overwhelming all others. And, I’m not one to dump on the national media either. I’m very picky about who I read and listen to. They’re not all wrong about how these matters are being applied. Their focus, as I stated in my comment, is the policy directive provided by the governor. That seems to be what’s created the issue.
It should also be noted that we’ve not seen book banning at this level in decades.

While I understand parents' concerns over what their children are reading, it is not the library's responsibility to pick and choose the books that are appropriate. That is the parents' job. Moreover, book banning is a very slippery slope. Today it is Nora Roberts, tomorrow it is George Orwell and the day after it is Martin Luther King, Jr. When does it stop?
I recently saw that a library in Tennessee banned Art Spiegalman's Maus I: A Survivor's Tale: My Father Bleeds History. This book conveys an important and significant message about the Holocaust, and it was banned because the mice are naked. This is what concerned people? Naked mice?
If books like this are banned, and children do not learn about the horrors of history (any history), then humanity is in very serious danger of repeating the atrocities of the past.
