20.9 Moderator's Pet- Kait's Task: Hel Hath Fury

Hel is the half flesh half undead daughter of Loki and Angrboda and ruler of Hel in Niflheim. She guards the Norse realm of the dead with Garmr, her blood-soaked dog, and ensures that the souls of the dishonored and undeserving of Valhalla cannot leave.

Note: Graphic novels, books with the genre "sequential arts", MAY be used for this task.

Read one book from the following options.
Required: Indicate the option.

Option 1: Read a book with the genre "Zombies" on its main page. The genre may be stand alone or embedded.
ex: The Walking Dead, Compendium 1, The Girl with All the Gifts, Feed

Option 2: Read a book that is the last published book in a series OR the most recently published in a series. Series and publication information must be on Goodreads (Series #). Whole numbers only.
ex: Banishing the Dark (Arcadia Bell, #4) final book in the series,
A Darker Shade of Magic (A Darker Shade of Magic, #1) book #2 is expected 2016,
Then Came You (Animal Magnetism, #5) Then Came You only works if you read it before April 7, 2015, then Still the One becomes the most recently published in the series)
Required: If posting after the release of a later book in the series you must state the completion date of your book indicating it was the last when you read it.

Option 3: Read a book where the main character(s) has a dog. This information must be found in the Goodreads description for the book.
ex: Hounded, Dog on It, Getting Rid of Bradley

All of those work for Option 3, I'll add them to the second post/approved list! :)

Thank you, it was my first time making a task. I had a lot of fun :)

That works for Option 3, I'll add it to the list in post #2!
I'm a sucker for naughty dogs :P My own has grown out of his trouble puppy... and not-so-puppy years but he's still a thief (he loves socks and will practically take the tips of your toes off fighting you for them).

Yes, The Lincoln Myth works for option two currently :) Both Amazon and all of goodreads release dates currently show The Patriot Threat as coming out March 31st. You'd know the release date better than me but you might have a little longer than the 16th.

Based on the language in the third example for Option 2 you might need to also claim the task before the next book comes out too (Then Came You (Animal Magnetism, #5) Then Came You only works if you read and post before April 7, 2015, then Still the One becomes the most recently published in the series)). I will send Dlmrose a message to double check and get back to you :)

message 19: by Kaity (new)

Kaity | 375 comments Wanda - Option 2 has been changed a bit so that you do not need to post in the Completed Tasks thread before the release of the next book. You still need to read your book before that next release date though.

Required: If posting after the release of a later book in the series you must state the completion date of your book indicating it was the last when you read it.

:)

Yup, Kidnap in the Caribbean works for Option 3 (IL: MY - BL: 5.7 - AR Pts: 8.0)! I will add it to post #2 :)

Nicola | 1411 comments Question for option 3, what about a book where the main character Is a dog - such as The Call of the Wild, is narrated by a dog such as The Art of Racing in the Rain or is just about dogs like Cesar's Way. All of these books technically have characters who 'own' dogs but the focus isn't on them it's on the dogs.

Some tricky ones! :P I sent a message to Dlmrose to double check my rulings and to see what she thought. I will let you know how it goes!

I'm actually probably going to read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies :-) But for other people it might open up option 3 a bit more. I have lots of books on my shelf where dogs are owned but they rarely show up in the Goodreads blub.

Enjoy Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (noted for Zombies with 1,012 users - although I highly doubt that would be a problem)! I believe I saw Pride and Prejudice and Zombies on a list of upcoming book to movie adaptations.

After much discussion I'm going to say these DON'T work for Option 3: The Call of the Wild and Cesar's Way/Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems. A dog narrator isn't an issue but there is no main character 'having' Buck in The Call of the Wild's GR summary. While dogs are obviously important in Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems, there's actually no mention of Cesar and his dog(s) in the description.

The Art of Racing in the Rain does work for Option 3 though (YAY!). Although from the dog's point of view, Denny seems to also be a main character and the summary mentions him being Enzo's person.

Alexis (kheleyr) | 120 comments Will Pretty Deadly, Vol. 1: The Shrike by Kelly Sue DeConnick work for option 2? Thank you.

message 28: by Trish (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 2798 comments I'm thinking of Burning Man for Option 3. The description starts: "LAPD cop Michael Gideon and his police dog partner Sirius became reluctant celebrities after capturing a notorious serial killer in the midst of an inferno", which hopefully covers the 'main character(s) has a dog' requirement. There's also a second one in that series, if it helps anyone.

Failing that, these are my other possibles: Things Can Only Get Feta: Two Journalists and Their Crazy Dog Living Through the Greek Crisis; Paw Enforcement by Diane Kelly.

Theres's also the Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow: her permanent companion is a half husky/half wolf named Mutt - would that work?

I'm a little unsure how a #1-5 volume would rule for Option 2 so I've sent Dlmrose a message. I will hopefully have an answer for you soon! :)

Oh! Several of those sound really good. Burning Man, Things Can Only Get Feta: Two Journalists and Their Crazy Dog Living Through the Greek Crisis, and Paw Enforcement all work for Option 3! I will add these to the approved list in post #2 :)

Are you on a specific book in the Kate Shugak series? I looked at the GR summary for the first (A Cold Day For Murder) and it doesn't mention her dog so it would not work for Option 3. It did mention her dog in the summary for #5 though (Play With Fire - I just picked another one at random), so that book would work.

I'm actually on #20 of the series, but it's a really good series. However, looking at the description Mutt isn't mentioned, so I'll leave that out for now. I was thinking the character not the description when I mentioned it. Thanks for confirmation on the others though!

Sorry, Alexis! Pretty Deadly, Vol. 1: The Shrike won't work for Option 2. We felt that the spirit of the task favored Pretty Deadly #5 which, unfortunately, doesn't meet the length requirements.
I hope you're able to find something else you'll enjoy reading for this task!

Wow! I'm always so impressed when I see people so far into a series. I'm a serial series starter and am only a few books in on dozens of series. I have my favorites but I enjoy the variety and it keeps me from binge reading through one.

I do that as well. I have a lot of series I've read the first three or four of. But I just really like the Kate Shugak ones. That said, it's taken me since 2005 to get this far! :-)

Amanda D. (tinyminx) | 31 comments For Option 2, I was curious about using Love Is Red by Sophie Jaff. The series information doesn't look like it's been provided, but in the actual description of the book, it states that it's the first book in a trilogy.

Will this work, Kait?

message 40: by Andy (new)

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 3754 comments Could I please have The Dog Who Saved Me by Susan Wilson approved for Option 3? Although the main character does not actually own the big yellow dog in the description, he is an animal control officer who captures this feral dog through love and at the end of the book, does get another K-9 partner to replace the K-9 partner he lost. So technically he "has" a dog throughout the book but does not actually own one until the final pages.

Love Is Red works for Option 2 :) I double checked with amazon and the harpercollins publishing page then added the series information to the metadata for you (I went with 'Nightsong' instead of 'Night Song' since that's how they had it under their series field).
I will add the book to the approved list in post #2!

Owning isn't necessary to 'having' for my task. I can only look at what's in the summary though and it's just vague enough that I'm not confident enough to give you an answer :P

Thanks, I have read the book so now I can post it. I thought it might not fit, so I wanted to check rather than make it to the bad board.
