2023 Team Competition Tracker / Google Sheet Central
I just know/figure the stats from some of the “power readers” can be daunting, reading 300/500/1000 pages every day, for months on end…
There’s a reason it’s a team competition, and not solo…

I hope people aren't discouraged from reading due to BRs. I hardly do them myself, usually 1 per month. I also read 99% physically which does limit my reading time compared to our audiobook readers and it's fine.
Just do what you can.
Just do what you can.

I know I asked you to change the Y/N audiobook one to recognize L,H,A for audiobook, and p/e for eyebook, but I'm wondering if I could change that again?
I was thinking of making that format column also work for graphic novels, and then change the graphic novel column into a where? column that isn't connected to any statistics...
Like, the format column could recognize a for audiobook, e/p for eyebook, and g for graphic novel, with the accompanying math.
Then the graphic novel column could be disconnected from the math, and I can put on which platform I read the book there!
Is that acceptable?
Thank you so much in advance!
Sounds doable... I'll work on it... maybe not today... returned to work after mini-vacation and feeling wiped...

The math changes work now... not sure what you want to do with the monthly section of the Where? column, tho...
I should probably clean it up at some point... the formulas support the old y/n answers and your newer ahl/ep/g answers... which don't make sense with the headers... don't even have to change anything to make the audiobook change you mentioned, since A is already supported... but I can remove HL later, too, when you start using the where column...

The problem with adding rows tends to be formulas need to be copied from existing rows... to do that, I generally highly 2 rows of formula/point cells, then drag the bottom right corner where the cursor changes, to copy the formulas down into new rows...
Alternately, in this case, you could have just highlighted an empty row further down and dragged it where you needed it, to use a row with existing formulas to insert the missing book... the sheet is pretty intelligent about modifying formulas when you drag things around... to drag a row you click the row number on the side, and when you click down, your cursor turns into a grabby hand...
Anyway, fixed!

I think I have noticed a simple checkbox column in some spreadsheets--maybe on the far-left? I was wondering if I could have one added to mine? I'm having trouble keeping track of what books I have reviewed and what I haven't yet, and think this would be a nifty way to do so...
Thank you so much in advance!
I saw your request, Nirkatze, then forgot about it and went to work a few days ago...
That's doable (if one of the more annoying additions)... just need to adjust some formulas in the Participant Data tab, to accomodate alot of info being one column to the right of where it usually is, without that column, and merge some cells for Team Name/Player Name, etc...
(It's not annoying to do... it's annoying that it makes less of the rows in the Participant Data sheet copyable, when setting up new players in future years, since I generally need to copy a row with basic setup without the checkbox column, or I screw things up)

Added your Reviewed column (Rev'd)... gonna need to be on the lookout for formula errors in how your points/etc are transferred to Participant Data and then the main page, and those little graphs in the top left region... i merged cells and then adjusted formulas from B column to A column, but I might have missed something... everything else should be fine, since everything was basically just summarily moved one column over, so data and formulas all adjusted in the same ways at the same time...
That's basically the name of the game... no matter what I do, minor formula issues seem to slip through the cracks in random rows/cells, every year...
Or things I don't use often tend to be broken... I changed the terminology I use for Series Progress a year or 2 ago, from Started, Incomplete, Finished, to Started, Continued, Finished... but I never updated by Bar Graph, so it was missing every book that was in the middle of a series until last week :D

Cell E166 is acting a little strange... usually when I input dates like 5/20/23, they auto change into May 20 etc. But this cell isn't. I'm not sure if it's just something weird about the date, or if there's something else wonky in the underlying formulas and figure I should ask...

Added rows tend to lose special formatting... fixed it...
Also, you had the read date set to May 2028, but I don't think that was the issue, just a coincidence...

Adding rows generally keeps formatting, but misses formulas… it’ll be easier for me to do it, when I get home…
I extended your sheet to 600 rows... pretty much the same as I have... should be enough to last to the end of the year... I just recently added more rows to my sheet...
Iain, I'll let you archive the Google Tracker thread and post the new one so you can manage the first post.

Curious--do the "winners" of the competition ever get officially announced?

Not in a separate thread or anything, we'll have to do that for 2024. Most people just talk about it in the group threads.

Usually, people take a couple days to input books read at the end of the competition, so I'll add it to the rules when the announcement will come.
Winner was official as of about November 7th, but things were so active this year, we just kinda moved into Cozy November and never looked back...
I usually leave this thread open until the next year spreadsheet is ready, then the final post can be a link to the new thread/spreadsheet.
That won't happen until right around New Years...

Putting up a valiant effort, and not managing more than 90% of my numbers ;)
Truthfully, if I really wanted to be competitive about it all, I could have squeezed in more reading, 24/7, at even faster speeds, and maybe reading a bunch of lopsided audiobooks (where the page counts are high, compared to audiobook length, for easy points)...
But I wasn't willing to damage reading enjoyment, risk burnout, and took breaks to watch TV/listen to music, as needed...
If you keep up, at your current speeds, you'll just lead all of next year... like when Soo participates and reads at her max speeds... I can compete for about a week, then the gap just continues to grow...
The main thing I have going for me is year-long consistency...

Maybe they should just put the two of us on a team together, and everyone else on the other team. Then it wouldn't be cheating... right?
@Siobhan, lol!

LOL
There was a 2 team year, as participation declined from the earliest highs, and it was kinda decided that it wasn't as fun with 2 teams, if one takes a big lead... at least, with 4 teams, there can still be close races for other ranks somewhere, usually...
I mostly overcare about the solo race...

From the Mr. Lovenstein comic:

We didn't read any of those Tome/Raider themed books last year... but there's always next year...

Is it possible to make the series/standalone recognize a specific word instead of a blank spot? I'd like standalone to count for anything I typed "none" into...
It's nice to be able to use the autofill function for tracking series, but that only works if there are no blank boxes in the column.
Thank you!

No, or, I certainly wouldn't feel guilty at least. If we all tried to hold ourselves to that standard the whole group would disband! 😅 We mere mortals appreciate having some reliable company in the threads.
Anyway, it's easy to see on the spreadsheet that most members have only done a couple BRs so far, or none at all. If anything, the nice thing about the competition is that it provides another way to interact even when you aren't participating in BRs.
It may be just a New Year's burnout. We've been active as a group recently what with the New Year's rush, and seeing a bunch of tempting BRs pass you by can be frustrating. I hope she can enjoy her reading more without the pressure to BR, but also hope that eventually she feels comfortable to come back. <3
