I added Only If You're Lucky and Darling Girls to the calendar as dates to be determined with Only If You're Lucky in December and Darling Girls in 2024. I'm thinking March for Darling Girls, but who knows. Maybe we'll want to read it earlier or later.

I've requested it as well. I love what I've read by Stacy Willingham so far. I'm almost always approved by St. Martins, so fingers crossed. I'm also still hoping to get the audio later so I'm not swamped with just ebooks in the new year.

Since it seems like a few people plan to buddy read it, I started a thread for Only If You're Lucky by Stacy Willingham Only If You're Lucky here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 1524 comments I won't be around much for probably the first half of 2024 as I am currently 21 weeks pregnant and due on Jan 9! And this is my first so I have no idea how much my reading will be affected. Obviously it WILL be affected but people (my family lol) don't seem to realize that I squeeze in reading at any moment or minute, even if it's just a page at a time. lol.

Thank you, Trisha! Yes, I have a physical book or device on me at all times, I even listen to my audiobook in the shower via Bluetooth speaker so I'm sure I'll manage to squeeze in *some* reading. I know I won't be reading my usual 300 books next year but that's okay! lol

I don't track them very well. I just know that St. Martins and Macmillan Audio are where I get the most approvals and Berkley pretty much never approves me. They did one time and it was a huge shocker. Other than that one, it's a pretty quick no.

I saw that Simone St. James has a new book coming out, Murder Road. It sounds really good and is on NG, but through Berkley.

I just went to check out the reviews on NG for Murder Road and there is only one:

"I requested a digital copy in order to sample the prose on my phone (since I don't have a eReader) before requesting a physical copy for review. My review will be based on the physical ARC I read (if I qualify)"

That is the entire review. How does this person get approved and Berkley declines my requests all the time? I'm sure they must have a popular blog or something. Sheesh.

I was declined for both The Sun Down Motel & The Broken Girls by this author, so I'm hesitant to even bother requesting.

Sorry for the mini-rant. lol

It's mind-boggling!

Found this on their publisher page on NG:

For the Penguin imprints of Berkley, Ace, and DAW, Penguin reserves the right to accept or decline requests on a case by case basis. Please note that at this time we are only approving review requests from reviewers/influencers with strong engagement rates, dedicated followings, and regular posting activity.

Shruti morethanmylupus (morethanmylupus) | 1111 comments Kristie wrote: "I saw someone say they were declined for Murder Road in 5 minutes. It was their fastest decline ever. lol"

That sounds like maybe they're auto rejecting? I'm going to request anyway even though I rarely get approval for Berkley books because I do really like her books. I've read most of them.

message 330: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2898 comments Mod
Yes, Shruti. That's why I have to assume that reviewer has a popular (and active) blog.

This is one of those situations where I really hope they add the audio to request later, although I don't recall them offering her books on audio before.

Shruti morethanmylupus (morethanmylupus) | 1111 comments I was (unsurprisingly) declined so I'm also crossing my fingers for an audiobook option

Oh, I preordered that one! I'm super excited about it too. :) I need to read my book club books from the library first though. Bummer. Sure go ahead.

message 334: by Elyse (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 1524 comments My copy of Holly came yesterday but I want to read If It Bleeds first as there is a short story about her in it and it's also a 2-month long buddy read at Castle Macabre blog that goes Sept 1-Oct 31. I'm planning on just reading it this month.

I don't. I passed on a widget because I haven't read Lavender House and don't have the time to! #growth 🤣

Haha... good job, Elyse! Passing on those widgets is hard. lol

I have to say this is a separate story, but there are some characters from the first story. I think you could read it as a standalone, but it is better if you read them in order.

I do like to read in order, even if they're companion novels and not strict sequels.

I think it's about 480. it's pretty short for Stephen King! 😂🤣

No worries, Tasha. I'm about 80% through now. It started out really good, but it got a little repetitive and frustrating. I think that bit is over now, but we'll see.

Tasha I hope so! Nothing like a good book gone bad. :)
