January 2023 Group Read #2 - Sundial
Finished this last month. Absolutely incredible, starts off a little slow but really ramps up. Can’t wait to hear everyone’s thoughts as they move through it!
I enjoyed this book very much. I love Catriona Ward's writing style and the way she can twist the reader's mind into a knot.
I happened to just finish this. I had no idea it was a group read! Excited to talk about it as I absolutely adored it.
ooh, i read this one last year + really loved it! i won't be rereading just yet, but i'm excited to hear what y'all think. hope y'all enjoy it! :)
I started this yesterday and so far it's really good. I've read her Last House book, and I don't want to come into this book with high expectations and then be disappointed. . . .
Finished Sundial and it was quite a wild ride. I liked it better than The Last House on Needless Street, which was more predictable, at least from the perspective of what was going on with the family situation. Catriona Ward is very good at creating dysfunctional oddball families with abnormal kids. I got wrapped up in the story as it unfolded in Sundial, and really enjoyed how the pace picked up a lot in the last third of the book. I’ve owned this book for a few months and I’m so glad to have finally read it - a very satisfying twisted story!
I read this one last year, and it truly was something unique! I'm looking forward to future released from her!!
I'm currently in the desert with Mom and Callie. Trying to figure out what direction this is going to go in . . . . Good stuff so far!
I started today and read 37 pages. I like the easy writing style and point of view. Rob certainly has her hands full.
Just finished. Wow. So much I’m taking away from this. I feel like this story hits me even harder than Needless Street did.
I’m on page 100, I hope something will happen soon. I’m having a hard time getting into the story… 😐
This was one of my favorite reads of last year! I don't think I'll be re-reading it yet but I'm so excited to see what everyone thinks of it.

I agree--such a great psychological rollercoaster!

I'm getting deeper into the events at Sundial, and I'm beginning to dislike Callie/Sundance (view spoiler) In a very strong way, I hope they all get their just rewards!
Nearing the 100 page mark.Rob and Callie are both deeply disturbed characters, and Ward using individual chapters with their own point of view/perspective really lets readers get into their heads.
I am fascinated by Callie. Not sure I like her, but I'm fascinated.
Now at Page 121. Just finished reading Rob's memories of growing up in the Sundial community. Something is a little off there, and the tension keeps building as she keeps revealing more . . . .
I’m about 1/3rd in on this one, and I like the little breadcrumbs that the author is leaving for us. Very curious to see where this story will go. This is the first book I’ve read by Catriona Ward.
I'm listening to this and I'm probably almost 50% in but I'm still not sure I know where this story is going. They do all seem to be a bit disturbed. Rob's back story, her husband, Callie.......it's all weird and not sure where it's headed lol.
Just finished. I really enjoyed it, but not as much as "Last House..." Everytime I thought i knew which direction we were going, Ward would throw another twist. I loved that I was contstantly off balance and usure what was coming next.
finding this really slow at the mo.... sort of enjoying it... to be fair ain't got a clue what's going on ....think I like last house a bit more but star at present.

Never too late--the threads stays open even after the month in case others want to read/join in.

That’s so rad! I’ll have to go back to some older threads in that case! Thank you for letting me know <3
Just picked it up and on page 20, I’m already hoping whatever happens.. happens to Irving, ugh he’s just the worst. 😂
I read this last year and had mixed feelings about it. I'm interested to see what you all think about it.Happy reading!

I found them similar in the sense that I had NO clue where either was going, but definitely different stories. I've since read another of the author's, and can honestly say they keep me on my toes!

My copy arrived yesterday but I just picked it up. I'm only 40 pages in and I sooooooo want Irving to die a most horrendous death.

I'm at page 127 and I'm having a tough time getting through this. I really don't like any of the characters or what's going on, and I feel so bored. I really want to finish this, but it's a struggle.
DNF! Just didn’t keep my interest at all. Every character had something wrong with them, they were depressing me + the dog farm? Just no!

I respect that. I felt some of the same feelings while reading this. I think SUNDIAL is one of those books that will get under the skin of everyone who reads it. It disturbed me.
SUNDIAL really gets intense in the final 100 pages or so. It was hard to put down after reaching that point.I think this is brilliant, but deeply disturbing. When a book has that kind of effect on me, it earns five stars.
