Monique Klinedinst | 6 comments I started reading this book ~1992 but found it too violent at the time (I was in my 20s). There was some sort of oriental component but can't remember if it was Chinese or Japanese. A power struggle involving the rape of a woman in like the first chapter. The cover was red. I've always remembered the technology referred to in it likening it to 3D printers of today. They may have called it spinning where they could create necessary artifacts like chairs or pencils by "spinning" them. Please help!

Ky | 448 comments Could it be the first book of the Chung Kuo series: The Middle Kingdom?
The Middle Kingdom (Chung Kuo, #1) by David Wingrove

Don't remember the "spinning" technology but it's been a long time since I read this book, and I do remember it being quite violent.

I just remembered another book from around that time, Japanese-based rather than Chinese:
Yamato: A Rage in Heaven
A Rage in Heaven (Yamato, #1) by Ken Kato Also a red cover, but I remember fewer details, so can't say if it's your book or not, aside from the Oriental aspect.
