madrano | 23685 comments Here's hoping that a year from now, Rachel, we will both forget how much we dreaded the switch! I have been using Kindle via Libby and like it a bit better but still not in love. Why the heck can't they show me how many pages i've got left or the time, for pete's sake!?

message 52: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 2247 comments That would be very irksome. I like to know how many pages I have read and also left to read. I can put the pages in my paperwhite

Go to top where it has a Aa and click on that and there where it says more you should be able to add it. I hope.

message 53: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments Interesting. I will do that when my iPad has finished charging. Thanks.

message 54: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 2247 comments I hope it helps. It is amazing how many times I look at pages read and I miss it when it is missing.

Thank you, Rachel. Presently i do not have a book on Kindle (i'm using Overdrive until they pry it from my avid hands) but will check that out. I thought it only controlled font size. That'll teach me.

Bella (Kiki) (coloraturabella) | 5371 comments I love my iPad. Never thought I'd love reading ebooks, but I do.

A Kindle is a device to read eBooks on.

Overdrive, Libby and Hoopla etc is a company that offers digital services that you library pays for so the library can offer you books, music, magazines and movies.

You can put the Overdrive, Libby, Hoopla app on a Kindle or iPad etc.

The single company offered Overdrive and Libby. It was their product. They are consolidating and will only offer the Libby app. I'm not sure who owns Hoopla or the other various digital apps.

message 58: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments Alias, are you saying there may well be a way to get the Overdrive books i love (presentation & clock, for instance) on the Kindle app i downloaded from my App Store? Interesting.

message 59: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29403 comments The company makes 2 programs, Overdrive and Libby. The company is discontinuing Overdrive. You will have to use Libby.

Libby works with the Kindle app the same way Overdrive does.

Personally, I don't see a difference in the eBooks I get from Overdrive or Libby. Any difference may be the publisher of the book. I'm not sure. I'll have to look closer next time.

If you don't see the page # on an eBook, you can always check and see what chapter you are on to see where you are in the book. You can locate that usually by the 3 dashes on the top left hand side of the page.

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29403 comments I checked off another book on my 2023 Determination List !

✔️ 3- The Beauty of Dusk by Frank Bruni Read March. ~ Rated 5/5

I reviewed the memoir in the Book Salon thread.

I listened to the audio as I read along with the eBook.

Rachel (arkinandco) | 2247 comments Good for you re those check marks. I love them.
Regarding Overdrive, when I download books from my library onto my Chromebook I use Overdrive. I guess at some point I will have to switch to Libby. The Libby that I use on my Iphone is less intuitive, at least to me.

I have been using Kindle with Libby, trying to get accustomed to it but it isn't as helpful and useful as Overdrive. Without finangling anything i can look around the page & see the time, what page i am on & how much longer the present chapter is. I'm not saying i cannot do that on Libby, only that it takes work i never did for OD. I'm resigned, don't get me wrong. This time next year i'll probably have forgotten my issues.

It's not unlike our switch from AOL boards to here. So much was done for me at AOL, which i had to learn to do for myself here at Goodreads. I'll get used to it. But we all know my tendency to complain. Come on, folks, it's me, deb! ;-)

Most excellent, Alias!

I also prefer Overdrive. However, it is being discontinued. So I'll have to deal with it. :(

message 65: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments Alias, i am clearly holding on to that very last second of "discontinued".

deborah,
fighting reality one piece at a time

I always keep 10 eBooks/audiobooks on hold at all times. I have to write down my hold list that I have on Overdrive in case they get lost in the transition to Libby. I'm sure it will be fine as I see the books I have on hold on Libby, but I just want to be sure. I should do that today.

message 67: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 2247 comments There is a way to sync them and I did. But I could not explain to anyone how I did it. Also I found the Libby tutorial almost useless.

message 68: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments LOL, Rachel. My hold & wish list had a smooth move. Unfortunately, i still have problems remembering where that "wish list" is!

message 69: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 2247 comments Feel you on that, totally.

message 70: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 2247 comments Since Libby is thrust upon us, I am slowly, very slowly becoming more familiar. There is also a comment section, which I believe is embedded in the help section. I did send feedback. Will it be read or listened to??

message 71: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments I did the same thing, Rachel. My thought was that if, in fact, there is a way to adjust their works to my machine, they would post me back. They haven't, however. Nary a word on any front.

message 72: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 2247 comments Yeah, it seems like almost too much to hope that our concerns will be addressed. At least we tried. We get an A for effort.

message 73: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments :-) Yes.

message 74: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29403 comments I've been focusing so much on the 100 Prompts challenge, I neglected my Determination List. I have to work on this. Maybe there are a few that would work for both challenges.

message 75: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments Same here, Alias. Now that we are in our new place, i glanced at my DL and see i am behind, needing one Presidential bio (The Moralist: Woodrow Wilson and the World He Made--Patricia O'Toole) and The Prairie--James Fenimore Cooper to complete my reading of the LEATHERSTOCKING TALES – Complete Series: The Deerslayer, The Last of the Mohicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers & The Prairie (Illustrated): Historical ... Settlers during the Colonization Period), to wit, The Prairie.

I also listed three books i began but haven't finished. I've pretty much decided i will not be finishing The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness--Michelle Alexander, having tried again and not gotten beyond her introduction. I have hopes of completing, however, Bunker Hill: A City, a Siege, a Revolution--Nathaniel Philbrick but will wait until i have more 100 prompts under my belt.

Good reminder, Alias.

Sorry to hear that. I own that one but it's in storage.

message 77: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments I still have hopes for it. The intro was just so full of material that i was exhausted upon completion. I moved on, hoping Bunker Hill would go quicker. It didn't. I suppose this is why both books are still on my DNFBWT (Did Not Finish But Want To) list. :-)

I hear ya. I have many books on my TBR that I want to read but I know they will require a lot of time to read, take notes and digest.

message 79: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments Blood and Treasure: Daniel Boone and the Fight for America's First Frontier--Bob Drury and Tom Clavin is turning into another. In each case, the books offer readers plenty of history and points to ponder, that i need breaks to process. As a result, they are slow going.

I'm hoping to complete this one before the end of next week, as i'm ready to move on. (Ok, i have two other books going, but i hope you get my meaning.)

message 80: by Alias Reader (last edited Dec 17, 2023 05:17PM) (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29403 comments I finished about half of my Determination List for 2023. I'm pretty happy with that as I was not only doing my DL but also our 100 Prompt challenge.

I'm going to carry over most of the ones I didn't finish and add more for 12. One book my library no longer carries the eBook, so I'll have to see if I can get a used copy or pass on it for now.

I look forward to seeing your Determination List for 2024 !

message 81: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23685 comments Good Job! I was thinking i might do the same with my leftovers. Presumably they were on my list because i wanted to read them...or they were on my TBR & i hoped to finish it. The issue with libraries no longer carrying an eBook i tagged early this year has cropped up several times for me. It's a bit frustrating but it's not like any of them were the only book on that topic. Fiction is more of an issue but still not an ender.
