Lorrea - WhatChaReadin'? (whatchatreadin) Haven't gotten any NetGalley books recently, but I'm getting these emails from St. Martins Press about a book called Saving Meghan Saving Meghan by D.J. Palmer that says my review copy is on it's way. Did anyone get this book from NetGalley?

Me either. But they still send me widgets for books. Especially St. Martin's Press.

If you get widgets do you always take them up? Just asking generally because I don't. I'm being really fussy about what I select now.

Good to hear. I was hoping it doesn't come across as rude to publishers declining books but I'm really determined to stick to my new rules. Can't read all the books!! I'm currently ploughing my way through Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series. There are lots of older books I want to read.

Janet, I’m with you. I initially felt I had to accept every widget. Lately, I’ve been declining as many as I accept just to keep my queue even somewhat manageable.

message 4074: by Christine (last edited Mar 19, 2019 05:55AM) (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments I think it’s important to allow ourselves “me time” with our TBR lists. It’s a source of deep joy to have that. I have been trying out other genres and have been discovering so much. And Janet, I love what you are doing! Last year I sampled a lot of the older thriller/crime fiction writers I had not tried and found a real treasure trove.

I also think the publishers appreciate the fact that not everyone is attracted to all their books and that it’s OK for readers to take a pass than to take a widget and not read it or give out a negative review. St. Martin’s Press has sent me a number of widgets—I have probably read and reviewed a little over half of them. They still usually approve me when I seek approval on NG.

Jim what are widgets?

message 4077: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5302 comments Mod
Hi Jim

Widgets are invitations from publishers to read one of their books. They're given so you don't have to request them. A bit like gifts!

message 4078: by Jim (new)

Jim Thank you, Janet. No publisher would ever ask me to read one of their books, so, I've no worries.

You’d be surprised. I’m not exactly a huge reader, don’t have a blog etc but do get sent them.

Adrian Dooley (adox66) | 246 comments Janet wrote: "Oddly enough I've been getting more of late and yet requesting less!"

Yeah me too. Took a break from reading for about three months at th end of last year and then set myself a very low number reading challenge for the year. I seem to be getting quite a few widgets(which is really nice). I do accept the vast majority of them.

Funnily enough St Martins Press are a publisher I gave up requesting from as they kept turning me down but yet send me widgets from time to time.

Do the publishers of books you prefer ie: thrillers, widget you or can you get them from any genre? Oh, one further question now that you have my interest, are you offered hard copies, or is it all kindle? I do zero kindle. Thanks for the replies.
JD

Yeah it’s more or less all thrillers that I get sent and they are all for kindle, no hard copies.

Funnily enough though I got an email from a publisher last week asking could they use part of my review of a Riley Sager novel in the “what people are saying about...” part on one of the inner pages. Of course I was delighted and said yes and they are going to post me a copy of the paperback when it’s published!

This one looks so good, but I got turned down for it; in fact, Bookouture turns me down time and time again. I review frequently on Goodreads, but I don't have a blog. Any tips for getting Bookouture to give me a chance to review?
