Sue, those are my kind of babies! :) I don't have any babies of my own right now, but am a "part-time" parent of a goofy Corgi named Gracie. She actually belongs to our neighbor, but shows up at our door on her own practically every day. She's gotten spoiled at our house - haha. :)

Hi Christine! Gracie showed up at our door yesterday evening and her owners went out to dinner. They got back late, so she just spent the night. She tried to follow my husband back to our house when he took her home! Such a crazy dog. :)

message 370: by Traci (new)

Traci | 29 comments I can't even imagine having 30+ NetGalley books at once - I have just 2 that are unread right now (well, 3, but I'm almost finished with one), and I'm already a bit stressed at needing to read those, even though the archive date is several months away for both. But I'm weird like that - haha. I'm curious though, does having a ton of approved books that feedback hasn't been given for not drop your approval rating a lot? I'm very new to NetGalley, and have requested less than 10 books, so am still working on getting my feedback to approval ratio up - I'm currently at 63%, which is one reason I'm trying to read the books I have more quickly.

message 371: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5302 comments Mod
Yes, Traci, feedback does affect your rating. So always give feedback on every book you attempt to read. Even if you start a book and didn't like, just say, I've done that. It still goes towards your ratio. I'm currently at around 70% with around 12 books to read I think. Don't feel pressured. Some of my books have been archived, I've had some for months! Publishers are looking for publicity so the more public your profile, ie. if you review on Goodreads, Amazon, Booklikes and you're a blogger, the better your chances of approval. But I wouldn't worry about any of it and just enjoy it for what it is..... a privilege!

Thanks, Janet! I was actually shocked to be approved for any NetGalley books since I don't have a blog, so they aren't getting as much publicity from me. I was a member of Netgalley for three years before even requesting a book due to thinking I wasn't their target market, but am glad that I finally tried it out!

message 373: by Christine (last edited May 09, 2015 08:17PM) (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Traci, I know a member who rarely gets turned down by Net Galley and has something like 70 or 80 to read and her ratio is under 50%. She has reviewed a lot though so that apparently plays a role. Until I picked up 3 in the last couple of weeks, my ratio was 100% and right before getting those 3 approvals, I was denied for 3. So ratio isn't everything, that's for sure. I have also heard the specific publishers have certian requirements, so if you are approved by a particular piglisher, you are likely to continue getting approved; if you are denied, then you are likely to keep getting denied unless you beef up your profile somehow.

Thanks, Christine. The whole NetGalley process seems very random - and like you said, doesn't seem to be completely tied to ratio. Doubleday is the publisher that has denied my request - however their preferences state "We work to approve a wide range of booksellers and librarians as well as media professionals and reviewers with established blogs and strong social media presence." Since I don't have a blog or strong presence on many social media sites, that could be it.

Traci | 29 comments I'm curious if anyone has read any of the books in The Huntress/FBI Thriller series by Alexandra Sokoloff? All three are currently "read now" on Netgalley. They sound interesting and get good reviews, but not sure if I want to try to fit them in right now or not.

I won't usually pay that much unless I am pretty confident I will like it. Why don't you consider just going for the first one for now and see how you like it before committing to all 3.

That's probably what I should do - and since the first one was published a while ago, I guess there really shouldn't be too much pressure to review it right away! :) I was really surprised to see all 3 as read now, especially since the publication dates have passed for all.

I have the first in the series, just haven't sat down and read it yet. I took a plotting class from her at a large writer's conference. She used to do screenwriting in Hollywood and she uses many of the same techniques for plotting in her writing. That is how I know her. I learned a lot from her about plotting for suspense, so if her books are anything like her classes, I imagine they are good. Sorry I haven't read Huntress yet to give you specifics.

That's good to know - I think I may have to eventually read the first in the series since it sounds so interesting. Will be interested to see what you think of it once you read!

Hi Christine, no my work season is never over...but we are planning a vacation! 10 days in Australia catching up with the kids and friends in June.
Approved for: Humber Boy B, Blood, Salt, Water, Time of Death, Rubbernecker, After We Fall, The Drowned Boy, Never Die Alone, A Thorn Among the Lillies, Little Girls, Forsaken, The Bones of You (for which i had previously been turned down).....
I seem to remeber saying a while back that i wasn't going to request lots at the same time again. I just have no self control *sigh*

Traci | 29 comments Not sure if others have noticed this, but many of the books listed by Amazon Publishing / Thomas & Mercer are currently "read now" on NetGalley. Lots in the thriller/suspense category that sound interesting. I'm trying not to add any more to my TBR list right now, but it's tempting. :)

Good books Sandy. I have 4 books to read from Netgalley, and that is enough for me, at one time, or I put pressure on myself. Can't go and browse or I will be bad!

Sean, You mentioned that you lost a book because it had been archived. Janet advised me to immediately download a book after it has been approved. That way you have the book and can still offer feedback after it has been archived.

Yes Lynn,

I saw on my phone I had been approved a book by Mark Billingham, but was too busy to go on my computer to download, a day later archived, and could not get it.

It's okay , as Chrustine will tell me I have enough to read !

Lynn, you're right to do so.

Sean, you can access Netgalley from your phone and download the same way. I've done it a few times.

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) | 5101 comments I lost Second Life by S.J. Watson - I applied for it on the last day prior to it being archived (it was already the following day NZ time), they approved it (overnight in NZ time), but because of the time difference between NZ and England, I lost it......
I currently have 23 books sitting on my NetGalley shelf for review....I went browsing last week......8:D
Oh well, I am taking a week off next month and will have 4 plane trips on which to read, so will play catch up then. AND I WILL NOT go back on NetGalley browsing for a while.....(but I have all the resolve of a piece of well cooked spaghetti!) 8:D

message 399: by Lynn Renee (new)

Lynn Renee | 1705 comments Does anyone know if you can have a Net Galley book delivered to more than one device? I just haven't had time to read the help section on this matter. I use my Kindle Fire HDX, but my Paperwhite works better in sunny situations. I'm going to camp soon where this will be a problem. Guess I could just change my Net Galley account to send to the Paperwhite.

message 400: by Gopal (new)

Gopal (gopaliyer) | 482 comments if you have multiple kindle accounts: 1 for HDX and 1 for Paperwhite, then add both to the NetGalley profile page. You can select which device to send to.

If you have only a single id between the two devices then books sent to that id will be available on both devices.
