I've had that happen before too Diane. I just put it down to a glitch.....but maybe you're right!

The 2 I just got approved for today :

The temptation to request so many books but I really don't want to get bogged down with latest releases. Really determined to mix it up this year. Think I got a mail about the Bale book. I've not read anything by him before. Sounds good though. :)

Would "someone" explain to me how Net Galley works? It seems so daunting to sign up , I don't know if I even did it correctly. Then, once you are a member, what do you do? It seems like you all search and pick out books you want to read and NG then downloads to your devices, free?? Why do they provide this service, an obligatory review ? I guess that I just don't "get it" ?? But, you all seem to use it a lot.

The basics behind it is basically yes, they are giving you a free copy of the book for an honest review of it. You sign up letting them know where you are willing to share reviews and linking them to those spots, how many friends/followers and things you have for the sites in your profile and a little about yourself. There is a profile help section too to give you an idea of what to put. I think everyone is a bit different so there's really no right or wrong way to fill it out and sometimes no logic to getting approved or turned down when you request.
The whole reasoning behind a site like Netgalley existing really all boils down to advertisement and publicity. Giving out a few free copies to hopefully people who love the book gets word of mouth going and drums up business for the authors and publishers.
Hope that helps some and maybe others could add their two cents to my explanation. :)

You're welcome :) One thing I should've mentioned too, the difference between books you see with a read now button, request or wish for it....
Read now is just as it sounds. You instantly get access to the title as they are open to everyone to be able to download if they wish.
Request means that you will be asking the publisher for their approval of the title in which they will either grant it to you or decline you. Don't worry about declines as they don't hurt you at all and everyone is bound to get a few eventually.
Wish for it books are basically like winning a lottery drawing. The publisher has a set amount of books it's willing to give out to anyone and after a certain time that amount will be randomly chosen from who entered.

You girls have been so helpful = 5 stars !!

I just went onto the Net Galley site and the 5 BASIC steps for becoming a member like.... what is my assigned Amazon acct. e-mail and all the new addresses that I must add to my address book = egads! I think that I did something right b/c they did accept my Log In and Password , but IF I were to choose a title, even from the Read Now, I doubt that they would even know how to deliver it to my Kindle b/c of my lack of sending information.
I will get back to this when I have .... time. Again, thanks for your tips. You've been great! Happy Reading to all , you addicts you :)

Jean - I would be panicking!
Have just been approved for

but was declined for the Lisa scottoline :(

Actually, I was just approved for See How They Run: The Gripping Thriller that Everyone is Talking About!

Gotta jump on the bandwagon!

LOL Jean! I have all those too.....isn't it a nice feeling *:D

Wise words, Christine. I'm finding I don't have enuf time for the books I'm excited to read, so plan to cut back on some of my "obligation"books. I like discovering new books through clubs and such, but need to find a better balance

Please all do bear in mind that requesting lots means you're sitting on many dollars / pounds worth of books. When you've got a big number, that's quite a bit of money which is an enormous privilege and responsibility. Some publishers do keep track of who's had what and the main point is that you should be reviewing most of the books you receive. After all, the concept is to generate further sales by creating buzz. I've been seeing a lot of negativity from authors about NetGalley and how it's perceived by some as a way of getting free books. I know we all take it seriously but there are some that abuse the system and spoil it for honest reviewers and bloggers. Ultimately it is down to the publisher but I'm of the attitude now where I will only request what I really WANT to read. I'm not going to love everything and I've not finished some books but still given feedback as to why.
It's really tempting to get carried away with requesting but you don't want to put yourselves under any pressure to read either. Who wants reading to be a chore?!

I keep a list, then read them in order of getting them, not in a timely manner and had two that I removed from my shelf verse slogging through them or leaving a bad review. Both the authors/publishers probably prefer that verse the review. I do bump up any publishers that I have automatic approval with and usually have 4 that I read at the same time.
They have to have some sort of agreement or netgalley wouldn't let you keep requesting or doing read now books when your shelves 50 books. They accept that you'll read their book, realize that you'll review it although not in a timely manner and then again maybe it's all based on the quality of your review.

Real easy, isn't it Christer and Steph?

Real easy, isn't it Christer and Steph?"
Hi Buddy! Are we still on for Dead Scared?????

Amen, Christer.

I really do agree with you, Janet, so please do not misunderstand this message as it is directed at the NetGalley authors. Let's take me for example. I am sure that there are many out there that have a lot more books than I. However, I do have my fair share, and I probably read a bit slower than most. However, this seem to be a bit of "having your cake and eating it, too." or "complaining about good intentions not being good enough." True, I have picked books that I want to read. Makes sense doesn't it? True, I have reviewed every book that I have finished reading. True, I have completed reading every book that I have began reading. True, I have not finished the books by publication date, but real close. The last true statement is the only remotely negative for the authors. This, being the case, I would say that it is a bit picky for the authors to complain about a service that they are receiving that most people try to fulfill with the best of intentions. Doesn't it seem to be a bit picky to everyone else? Or, am I way off base?
