I've had that happen before too Diane. I just put it down to a glitch.....but maybe you're right!

I read it last year, when it was on storycartel.com, it's an excellent read and it explains about the Somali pirates. Here's the link, from my review of the book; https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments That's great, Janet! I've been working hard too--I am just starting one of my last two. Then I have to tackle a load of read-for-reviews, but plan to sneak in some personal preferences too.

Chris | 267 comments I got approved for this Most Wanted by Lisa Scottoline . I have read almost all of her stand alone books so I can't wait to read this one.

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments I read Skin and Bones by Tom Bale a year or so ago. It was pretty darn good. Geez, just looked at the reviews on the Bale book so far. I may have to fold and request it. Will wait 24 hrs and reassess. I'm doing so well getting my list down. Unlike some good buddies I know, Ms St. Patrick's Day! (-:

The temptation to request so many books but I really don't want to get bogged down with latest releases. Really determined to mix it up this year. Think I got a mail about the Bale book. I've not read anything by him before. Sounds good though. :)

Would "someone" explain to me how Net Galley works? It seems so daunting to sign up , I don't know if I even did it correctly. Then, once you are a member, what do you do? It seems like you all search and pick out books you want to read and NG then downloads to your devices, free?? Why do they provide this service, an obligatory review ? I guess that I just don't "get it" ?? But, you all seem to use it a lot.

message 1817: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 23 comments Betsy wrote: "Would "someone" explain to me how Net Galley works?.."

The basics behind it is basically yes, they are giving you a free copy of the book for an honest review of it. You sign up letting them know where you are willing to share reviews and linking them to those spots, how many friends/followers and things you have for the sites in your profile and a little about yourself. There is a profile help section too to give you an idea of what to put. I think everyone is a bit different so there's really no right or wrong way to fill it out and sometimes no logic to getting approved or turned down when you request.

The whole reasoning behind a site like Netgalley existing really all boils down to advertisement and publicity. Giving out a few free copies to hopefully people who love the book gets word of mouth going and drums up business for the authors and publishers.

Hope that helps some and maybe others could add their two cents to my explanation. :)

message 1818: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Hetzel | 122 comments I appreciate your very complete explanation, Carrie. Many thanks for taking the time to help me out. Maybe now I'll go back onto the site and see how I do :)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 23 comments Betsy wrote: "I appreciate your very complete explanation, Carrie. Many thanks for taking the time to help me out. Maybe now I'll go back onto the site and see how I do :)"

You're welcome :) One thing I should've mentioned too, the difference between books you see with a read now button, request or wish for it....

Read now is just as it sounds. You instantly get access to the title as they are open to everyone to be able to download if they wish.

Request means that you will be asking the publisher for their approval of the title in which they will either grant it to you or decline you. Don't worry about declines as they don't hurt you at all and everyone is bound to get a few eventually.

Wish for it books are basically like winning a lottery drawing. The publisher has a set amount of books it's willing to give out to anyone and after a certain time that amount will be randomly chosen from who entered.

message 1820: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Betsy, also look at the READ NOW books. They are a great way to get started. They require no approval, if you want to read them, you can read them--you have to review them though. That will let you pile up some reviews for publishers to see when you request their books.

message 1821: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Hetzel | 122 comments Christine and Carrie, My "problem" is that I belong to 3 book groups and must read those books , which I enjoy doing. That does not allow me a lot of "free"/extra time for other books like from Net Galley. I get nervous when things start to pile up, have to read, have to review, etc. but.... all your information has gotten me excited about this so I will go back onto the site and see what it's all about.
You girls have been so helpful = 5 stars !!

message 1822: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Too many winning books out there, Betsy. I try not to get boxed in by one thing like Net Galley, book club reads, read-for-review, or read simply for pleasure. I do a mixture of all and find it very satisfying. I am behind on my read-for-reviews, which adds stress, but once I am caught up, I plan to not get overburdened in any one "sector" again.

message 1823: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 23 comments I'm one that is a hopeless addict and can't help hitting request all the time but my best advice is if you think it would be stressful to keep up then only click as you want or need something to read. As Christine said there are tons of great read now options out there all the time and if you are wanting something you could always just pick one up and read it. Sometimes requesting can take weeks or even months for an answer if you will get it or not, other times they are really quick and approve that day or the next. Just don't let yourself get too many in the request queue in or pick up too many read nows at once where you would become stressed. :)

message 1824: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Hetzel | 122 comments Something that I must admit : I am a tech. dinosaur.
I just went onto the Net Galley site and the 5 BASIC steps for becoming a member like.... what is my assigned Amazon acct. e-mail and all the new addresses that I must add to my address book = egads! I think that I did something right b/c they did accept my Log In and Password , but IF I were to choose a title, even from the Read Now, I doubt that they would even know how to deliver it to my Kindle b/c of my lack of sending information.
I will get back to this when I have .... time. Again, thanks for your tips. You've been great! Happy Reading to all , you addicts you :)

I have lots of books on the Kindle, a few Karin Slaughter books that I haven't gotten to, plus a few used books that I picked up at the public library's book sale last month...and there's always the library too! Wise words, Christine. I'm finding I don't have enuf time for the books I'm excited to read, so plan to cut back on some of my "obligation"books. I like discovering new books through clubs and such, but need to find a better balance

message 1833: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Perri, I am always struggling with that balance. In the last year I have read very few of my personal picks. That is why I am determined to get my obligations out of the way. In terms of Net Galley books, I am not picking any now that I would not pick for my personal "must read" list. That makes my current Net Galley collection small and pleasurable to work on. Now I need to extend that thinking to my read-for-review offers. I have a hard time saying no to authors who personally contact me. Fortunately, I have no problem passing up group reads that don't really interest me that much. Just gotta get a handle on read-for-reviews...

message 1834: by Chris (new)

Chris | 267 comments I said to myself let me try for another book which I did and I got approved for See How They Run The Gripping Thriller that Everyone is Talking About by Tom Bale . So after I am finished reading Lisa's book I'll get on this. Should be a good read.

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Good for you, Diane! And it sounds like you are making good progress on your NG load just by not requesting.

message 1837: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5302 comments Mod
Please all do bear in mind that requesting lots means you're sitting on many dollars / pounds worth of books. When you've got a big number, that's quite a bit of money which is an enormous privilege and responsibility. Some publishers do keep track of who's had what and the main point is that you should be reviewing most of the books you receive. After all, the concept is to generate further sales by creating buzz. I've been seeing a lot of negativity from authors about NetGalley and how it's perceived by some as a way of getting free books. I know we all take it seriously but there are some that abuse the system and spoil it for honest reviewers and bloggers. Ultimately it is down to the publisher but I'm of the attitude now where I will only request what I really WANT to read. I'm not going to love everything and I've not finished some books but still given feedback as to why.

It's really tempting to get carried away with requesting but you don't want to put yourselves under any pressure to read either. Who wants reading to be a chore?!

message 1838: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Amen, Janet.

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) | 5101 comments Wise words Janet. I make a point of reading and reviewing every book I request from them, it is just that some are not in a very timely manner. I too have been contacted directly by both authors and publishers, but if it is not something I would be prepared to pay for to read, then I decline (nicely). I try to use the same criteria when requesting books too.

message 1840: by HornFan2 (last edited Mar 20, 2016 11:09AM) (new)

HornFan2 (hornfan2) | 235 comments I agree with both Janet and Sandy, but on the flipside I do think that authors and publishers found that netgalley.com necessarily didn't work for them or wasn't to the expectations they were expecting.

I keep a list, then read them in order of getting them, not in a timely manner and had two that I removed from my shelf verse slogging through them or leaving a bad review. Both the authors/publishers probably prefer that verse the review. I do bump up any publishers that I have automatic approval with and usually have 4 that I read at the same time.

They have to have some sort of agreement or netgalley wouldn't let you keep requesting or doing read now books when your shelves 50 books. They accept that you'll read their book, realize that you'll review it although not in a timely manner and then again maybe it's all based on the quality of your review.

I really do agree with you, Janet, so please do not misunderstand this message as it is directed at the NetGalley authors. Let's take me for example. I am sure that there are many out there that have a lot more books than I. However, I do have my fair share, and I probably read a bit slower than most. However, this seem to be a bit of "having your cake and eating it, too." or "complaining about good intentions not being good enough." True, I have picked books that I want to read. Makes sense doesn't it? True, I have reviewed every book that I have finished reading. True, I have completed reading every book that I have began reading. True, I have not finished the books by publication date, but real close. The last true statement is the only remotely negative for the authors. This, being the case, I would say that it is a bit picky for the authors to complain about a service that they are receiving that most people try to fulfill with the best of intentions. Doesn't it seem to be a bit picky to everyone else? Or, am I way off base?
