Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments I know, Janet. The guys over in the Net Galley Readers group (where I have been sitting and lurking a lot) are heavy hitters. Many have high double digit numbers, and triple digit numbers are not uncommon with these folks.

Don't anyone let Sean read this post.

Well I won't go there, requesting vast numbers, I have way too many other books I want to read.

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) | 5101 comments I currently have 73 and probably a few waiting for approval/decline.
I had an e-mail from Joanne Clancy today offering a copy of her new book Insincere Insincere (Detective Elizabeth Ireland, #2) by Joanne Clancy for review. Yes!!!!!

WOW! But you read fast and write such excellent reviews, Diane, so they are willing to wait.

I'm now down to 8, onto another. On a Netgalley roll at the moment, read 3 in a week. Want to get my ratio up. It's at 89% I think.

About the same for me, but normally around 92%.

The Last Good Place by Robin Burcell

Thank You very much to Net Galley, the publishers, and Robin Burcell, for the opportunity to read this great book.

Robin Burcell has worked as a cop, hostage negotiator, and as an FBI-trained, forensic artist . She’s also the author of award-winning thrillers. Now she uses that unparalleled experience to continue Carolyn Weston’s groundbreaking series of books, which were the basis for the hit TV show "The Streets of San Francisco."

Sgt. Al Krug and his younger, college-educated partner Casey Kellog are investigating a string of strangulation killings when another victim is found at the Presidio…but a surprising, violent incident at the crime scene makes them wonder if everything is what it seems. The two miss-matched cops, with sharply conflicting approaches to detective work, are under intense pressure to get results. It’s a race-against-the-clock investigation that propels them into the deadly intersection of politics, real estate, media and vice… the fertile, fog-shrouded killing field of a ruthless murderer.

This is a very enjoyable, easy reading, great story with plenty of characters, two great lead characters and different detectives, and Karl Malden and Michael Douglas faces kept coming into my head.

A very well written to me a real classic type police procedure, from an author will all the experience and knowledge.

Kept as a great pace with strong supporting characters, keep you guessing to the very last pages.

I am very keen to read more from this author, as I like her writing style.

A good four stars for me.

Yeah I did too. Must have got approval pretty much straightaway. Also got approved for The Girl With No Past. After seeing a couple of reviews, thought I'd go for it. But I'm seriously cutting down on requests. I've got so many books already lined up I want to read.

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments I bet you and I and most of the rest of us will never again not be stacked up. What do you think of that?

Yeah. Quite possibly. In order for me to have the time to read so many books that I've missed something is going to have to give. I've got approx 10 books next to my bed all waiting to be read!

message 1077: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments You know, there are a limitless supply of books we would just love out there. I'm starting to think that none of us will ever finish but a small faction of our lists, no matter what. Even if we quit everything else in our lives, we wouldn't finish the lists. And even if we did, there would be more books pouring in every day to catch our eyes. My goal is to actually get myself to make more time for nonreading stuff like more hikes in the woods and state parks, more spontaneous road shows, more time for coffee/wine with friends, cleaning out the basement and closets and things like that. I find time discipline really hard now that I'm retired. Janet is going to put me in jail now for idle babble on the wrong thread.

Not at all. My reading definitely goes up and down. And it's certainly not the be and end all which is why I'm reluctant to commit to too many books on NetGalley. I want to do other things to and I do have a family that takes up my time. Reading is a pleasure, and I want it to remain that way. But you're right there are books coming from all angles and don't let up. I suppose having a large number in terms of quantity is like having your own personal library. I fully accept I'm never going to read everything I want to and now just appreciate I have a great selection to choose from. A selection that just keeps growing......and growing! :-D

Good choice! I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. Look forward to what you think!

message 1080: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Reading to me is almost like an addiction. It's too easy not to put the book down unless I have to. It can often be an inertia sort of thing. Having said that, I usually read only 2-3 hours a day.

Pia | 40 comments I first heard about NetGalley a short time ago and signed in, but I'm not sure if I meet all the requirements for approval.

Do you all have blogs?

How should I get started on NetGalley? I already downloaded 2 "read now" books and got approved for another one, but I guess everyone gets approved for some books?

I appreciate all the tips you can give me.

Thanks!!

message 1083: by [deleted user] (new)

Just requested Lost girls, fingers crossed.

message 1084: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Pia, you've done the right thing so far. The idea is when you've read those books, send the publishers feedback via the 'give feedback' button, and give your honest thoughts on that book.
I have a blog that I only use for Netgalley books, I don't generally put a review for EVERY single book i've read. A lot of people don't have a blog though and just post reviews on here and to Netgalley. Some publishers are stricter than others when they give out ARCs. For instance every single book i've requested from Simon Schuster, I always get declined. Even though I have a blog etc etc. It's just hit and miss. But just enjoy! :)

message 1085: by [deleted user] (new)

Be warned though Pia it can become very addictive! I've been caught out before when I had over 20 on my shelf to read at once!! Don't even ask how many Sean's got though!!!! Ultimate Netgalley sinner!! :-p

Some publishers are quite happy to approve your request in exchange for reviews posted on Amazon and/or Goodreads. You can then build up your referral rating and are likely to be approved for more books.

You're right Janet. Reading can distract and take away from other duties. But somewhere between work, life and life's unplanned events is that delicate balance, one where there is zero guilt for hunkering down with a good book. I'm still searching for it. :-)

Did I see my name mentioned.....

I am on 59 books.

Turned down for Tess Gerritsen

Waiting for Angela Marsons, but also have on order from Amazon.

Trying my best not to request to many, only about 3-4 waiting for approval.

Pia | 40 comments Thanks for the tips!

I got approved for Lost Girls and rejected for Under the Udala Trees, but they said it was because it had reached the maximum number of downloads, so it wasn't so painful.

So now on to reading and reviewing.

Another question that may sound silly, but I suppose it's ok to post the same review here on Goodreads, on Amazon and on NetGalley?

And maybe on the blog that I created years ago and that's completely abandoned?

message 1100: by Sue (new)

Sue (coccotoro) | 2087 comments Yes, Pia that is correct. I post the same review on all 3 sites.
