I think this is a question for NetGalley. I would really feel uncomfortable if authors started contacting me asking when or why I had reviewed their book. Isn't it spelled out in your contract with them somewhere?
Sorry christine, I just had wanted to mention that I have never been approached by a publisher yet, maybe it just takes time. It's o.k. though, I can hardly keep up with what I get. It sure is fun though!
I'm with you, Dorie. It's like winning a free shopping spree. I really try to stay off that site. I think I have 6 to read which a lot of guys would scoff at, lol, but I feel the pressure with anymore than that. (-:

Marilee, I have never read Koontz either and I did look at this book too (passed on it for now). Will be interested in what you think about your first experience with one of his.

I got an email from NG on this book...I used to be a huge fan, but when he started churning out books almost every month I gave up. I just requested out of curiosity...wondering how his style of writing is, so many years later!
Christine wrote: "So does that mean you got it, Jan?"Just sent the request in yesterday, so waiting :)
Dorie wrote: "Christine wrote: "I also just got a letter from River Grove publishing asking me to review Live to Air: An Ethan Benson Thriller. [bookcover:Live to Air: An Ethan Benson Thriller|25..."The contract is with the publisher, not me. Don't worry, I'm not chasing people down for their timeline, although I have sent a "thanks for your interest" email, which I don't think is out of bounds. I asked this group because all of you seem to be savvy Net Galley users and I wanted your opinions.

Reading it now Chris. It's a treat!! :))

Thanks Chris. I'm quite anxious at the moment my reviews are rubbish. Someone contacted me regarding a post on my blog, saying they thought it wasn't a good review etc etc. I'm sure I should just ignore this but I've been worrying ever since.
I don't like to give much more of the plot than the blurb states (which she said I didn't offer enough insight into the storyline).....
I like to just say how a book made me feel. What I did and didn't like, if I could relate to the characters..... :(( meh.

If it was someone from NetGalley… all we owe is our honest and fair opinion of the book, nothing more. If, horrors, it was the author of the book that contacted you, that's just out of line. Reviewers for NetGalley books should be kind I suppose, but I'd never fib or slant a review. That's not fair to people who are reading your review.

Kimberley, honestly I think many reviews are TOO detailed. A lot of them are practically re-telling the story in their own words and that's the last thing I want. The journey is mine, not someone else's. And I know many authors are not keen on reviews being too detailed either. A good review should just be a reflection of how the book made you feel. A synopsis of the story is fine but ultimately that's what book blurbs are for. Don't let it bother you. From what I've seen you write great reviews so stick to what you know, you're already doing a fine job. And ignore the rest! Keep smiling ;0)

Kim, I am SURE you were not unkind with whatever review this was. And I strongly bet you were honest, knowing how in sync we often are about how we think about books. You know I have read a lot of your reviews. In terms of you not giving enough insight into the storyline, well, that's just a bizarre complaint. I rarely give much attention at all to the plotline in my reviews. I assume the reader has read the blurb, and I usually feel that is all the author wants the reader to know and it is usually a fine intro to my review without me repeating it. The purpose of a review is simply to convey how the book made YOU feel, what YOU liked and what YOU didn't like. Don't let this person make you hesitate in writing reviews. As Marilee says, another reader can write his own review. And the author can't tell you how a book makes you feel. In my opinion, the author has nothing to say in terms of criticism unless the reviewer made an obvious error in a stated fact or the reviewer was rude or hurtful. Your reviews have always been excellent in my opinion. Don't let this person make you hesitate in writing reviews. Ignore him, Kim.
Thanks guys for all the comments. I will definitely be continuing with my reviewing, like you guys said, I hate it when reviews give the entire story away, so I never do that myself. I just want to know how the book made people feel, whether you had a hard time putting it down etc... so that's the sort of thing I write about!
As I said to Chris, I think sometimes people just have nothing better to do than to be unkind .

Kimberley, I always enjoy reading your excellent reviews. Don't worry about what this idiot said. They have no taste.
Agreed.
As mentioned, I like to read a good review, but hate it well the whole story is given away !

I look at reviews [and movie trailers] that give away the whole story as cultural cheating… sort of like Clif notes.
I agree with you Marilee. When I pick a book from my ridiculously humongous to read list, I do not re-read the blurb or look at any reviews so i can go in as cold as possible. I find it much more fun that way. Movie trailers are the absolute worst--half of them give up the whole plot. Why do they do that???
Aaaaaaagh! I got approved for Solomon Creed but way away and out of net contact. By the time I got back, the book had been archived... Rats.
I don't dare go on Netgalley because then I just order too many books. So I'll enjoy seeing what you guys request.
Yeah, Susan. Once you get that first approval, you are hooked for life. Net Galley is meth for readers.
What happened to you and me, Janet? Didn't we decided we weren't Net Galleying anymore? I currently have more NG books waiting to be read than I have ever had before.
I know! Though I haven't requested mushy lately. And reading like a demon so I can plough through some on my shelf! Down to 12 I think.
I've got 9 on my shelf currently . Nearly finished one.
Lol Chris... Meth for readers - so true!!
Christine wrote: "Yeah, Susan. Once you get that first approval, you are hooked for life. Net Galley is meth for readers."I thought it was just me that had so many books. It is like potato chips you can't settle with one approval.
Christine wrote: "Chris, there are some with over 200!!!"I lost count for the books i got approved. Would be more if I got my blog up and running. Well I have 90% review rating so I'm not doing that bad. At this moment I'm bored so I think I'll go over to Net Galley to see if anything piques my interest and request.
Rowena wrote: "Aaaaaaagh! I got approved for Solomon Creed but way away and out of net contact. By the time I got back, the book had been archived...
