Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments March 21, 1965 - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. leads march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., for voting rights.

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Selma march, read at least 1 (one) book that deals with civil rights protests, demonstrations, struggles, issues, etc.

You can list your choices and goals here and/or on the widget.

Have fun!

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments I think I'll try and read nine books this month. Most of them will be for school so we'll see if I can squeeze a themed book in there somewhere.

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments I am going to go for 10.

My top two choices for theme book are

Trumbull Park -- Housing Civil Rights
March with Me -- Birmingham Marches

Onni I just read 'Black Like Me', but I want to read another book on the topic this month.

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Omni, Black Like Me is on my to-read list. What did you think of it?

message 6: by Beverly (new)

Beverly I will have to think hard on this as I have read quite a few books on this subject.

But if anyone is looking for a really good fiction for theme I would highly recommend Freshwater Road by Denise Nicholas.

Linda | 172 comments I am reading The Marrow of Tradition right now, but I will read another, also. I don't know what book.

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 142 comments Wow...more great suggestions that I'll be adding to my to-read list and timely reminders of titles that have been on my list for a while now! I am reading March: Book Two and listening to NPR American Chronicles: Civil Rights right now and they both fit this month's theme. I'll probably read another title or two dealing with this month's theme and challenge myself to a total 8 books this month.

Glad you enjoyed. I have enjoyed everything by Charles Chesnutt.

I enjoyed March One so need to read March Two.
My daughter has used March One in her class. Graphic novels are an easy way for her to teach history.

Beverly I am going to go for 15.

Not sure which book I will read for this month's theme.

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments How did everyone do this month?

I wanted to read more but I've had so much going on. Probably should've set my goal a little lower.

message 13: by Londa (new)

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments I read 8/10. Pretty good. I put out an ILL for Trumbull Park and it never came in so I didn't get around to a theme book.

My 4 **** for the month. I recommend them all.

The Paris Architect
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry
The Passage
Hold Tight, Don't Let Go: A Novel of Haiti

No 5 ***** this month.

Beverly I had a good reading month - I had a lot of 3.5 reads which is a very good rating for me.

But I also had several outstanding reads:
The Orenda
The Lotus and the Storm
On Immunity: An Inoculation
The Sellout
