WndyJW Very good review, Brian. The only Brian Moore novel I completed was The Magician's Wife, which I must not have been impressed with since I gave it 3 stars and didn’t write a review. I tried to read The Mangan Inheritance, but it wasn’t working for me at all so it’s DNF and I won’t be trying it again, an adult man sleeping with the teenage cousin he just met was too off-putting.

Tania | 1240 comments I finished this one this mornin.g. I agree with what everyone has already said here, it was just devastating, but the writing was marvellous. It reminded me a lot of The Rector's Daughter which was also a sort of last hope, maybe affair of another woman who had been a carer for an aged relative. I think Judith was lucky not to have ended up with Madden, but she didn't, and for her to have that hope which was then dashed, was very damaging.

Spot on Tania

WndyJW I’m so pleased Judith was well received. To be honest I had forgotten how sad it was! I remembered that it was a sad situation, but not how dark it all got.
