The first half of the book was a real struggle for me. The second half, was much better and I really got into the story. So I have mixed feelings! Still, I'm glad i got a chance to finally read this book!

@Jan, I am with you on (view spoiler) . Yes, Artemis, the h, has a propensity for making this kind of exclamation and it is one of several things I'm finding annoying about her, as I don't think her use of phrases like this makes her cute or likeable or amusing or whatever I'm supposed to feel about her. I'm telling myself: well maybe the author did her research and these are phrases that were genuinely used during the era?
Generally, this h is annoying me, but I don't mind the H, Dominic, at this point. So far what I like best about Dominic is (view spoiler)
Re: the situation with Artemis' sister Phebe's marital status (view spoiler)
Also, the other good thing about Dominic is he has grey eyes, so I can use this book for the BINGO challenge!

Re your first spoiler, Cath. I definitely do not think that gently bred young ladies of this era would speak or even think such words, or in many cases even have heard them. But many readers don't mind this 'modern' kind of HR, and for those who can accept those kinds of little details, this kind of book can be quite enjoyable, no doubt.
I didn't read enough of the book to be able to comment re your third spoiler, but I agree that plot points/characters that you struggle to believe in can make for a frustrating read. Hope the story gets better for you.

It took me a few days to warm up to the characters. It felt like the plot was a very typical plot and I didn't see how the two main characters would ever run into each other again after their first meeting. But, after their second encounter I was myself "besotted" with their interactions. I loved reading about their relationship. I knocked off one star for the minor plot (it was so predictable I really only skimmed when the author wrote on that story line). All-in-all, I am marking this as a favorite and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

When she gets it right, Amy Rose Bennett shines, in my opinion!!

Artemis was crafted to be a heroine with a modern sensibility, and b/c Dominic too had a modern sensibility - for the most part, for a man of that time period - (view spoiler) for me this meant there was very little interpersonal conflict between the two. Most of their issues revolved around (view spoiler) , and so ultimately, while I thought these were two worthy people, their romantic journey felt a bit too flat for my taste.

Such good points on Aunt Roberta, her choices were confusing to me. I saw her as more of just a prop, something else existing so that Artemis could appear independent and forward-thinking.
But, not sure yet, I may try another by this author.

It is a lovely cover!!

One of her best ones, in my opinion, is How to Catch a Sinful Marquess, with a very sexy, scarred Scot. It is lower steam, but I think the relationship that develops between Hamish and Olivia is what makes it for me.

Thanks for the recommendation Juliet - I am going to check it out!
