Up All Night with a Good Duke (The Byronic Book Club, #1) by Amy Rose Bennett
Up All Night with a Good Duke by Amy Rose Bennett

Join us in reading this HR that features the theme overlooked heroine. Happy reading!

Synopsis:

"I can think of the perfect way to keep you occupied and your mind diverted," she murmured. "Come to my room. If you're not too tired..."

Lust flashed in his gaze, and then, he caught her face between his hands and kissed her. "For you, my beautiful Artemis, I'd stay up all night."

Artemis Jones―"respectable" finishing-school teacher by day and Gothic romance writer by night―has never lost sight of her real dream: to open her own academic ladies' college. When Artemis is unexpectedly called upon by a dear friend, a fellow Byronic Book Club member, to navigate her first London Season, she comes at once. Who knows, perhaps she can court the interest of a wealthy patron for her school. As long as she can avoid her high-handed aunt's schemes to marry her off.

Dominic Winters, the widowed Duke of Dartmoor, needs a wife―someone who will provide him with an heir and help him to manage his spitfire adolescent daughter. The problem is, Society has dubbed him "The Dastardly Duke." Rumors are rife that he murdered his mad wife, so his choices for a suitable bride are limited. But then, he meets the ravishing and passionate Artemis Jones, who might just be everything he needs.

Maureen | 189 comments This was a first for me by this author. I really enjoyed the story, the MC’s and secondary characters and the authors style. The MC’s were h Artemis Jones (29) (secret Gothic Romance author) and Governess, Dominic Winter a Duke (38) and widower with a teenage daughter. I loved their meet cute and all the steamy love scenes. Read it. I loved It and hope you will too.

Cath | 370 comments Well my library has this, so I've checked it out and think I'll give it a try. Looking forward to trying this new-to-me author.

Merry in and out for the next few days (jewelhound) | 856 comments I am on hold for this book so when it comes in, I will start on it.

Lauren | 1385 comments I started reading this book yesterday. So far it's a bit too modern for my taste but I'm hoping the story will make up for that.

Jan (jan130) | 2673 comments I tried the kindle sample and this one isn't for me. (view spoiler) I probably should have guessed from the title and cover that this one wouldn't be my cup of tea. I'm sure there will be many who will enjoy it though. It's just not the style of book I prefer to read.

Mariana | 2692 comments I read this in July. I really enjoyed it, but I haven't decided if I want to reread or just move on to read book 2.

Lauren | 1385 comments I finished! Yay!!! To be honest, this was not my type of book. It was way too modern for a hr.

The first half of the book was a real struggle for me. The second half, was much better and I really got into the story. So I have mixed feelings! Still, I'm glad i got a chance to finally read this book!

Merry in and out for the next few days (jewelhound) | 856 comments For some reason there is a wait list for this book at the library. I am going to try one of the other books for this month's read.

Cath | 370 comments Started this and now finished thru Chapt 10.

@Jan, I am with you on (view spoiler). Yes, Artemis, the h, has a propensity for making this kind of exclamation and it is one of several things I'm finding annoying about her, as I don't think her use of phrases like this makes her cute or likeable or amusing or whatever I'm supposed to feel about her. I'm telling myself: well maybe the author did her research and these are phrases that were genuinely used during the era?

Generally, this h is annoying me, but I don't mind the H, Dominic, at this point. So far what I like best about Dominic is (view spoiler)

Re: the situation with Artemis' sister Phebe's marital status (view spoiler)

Also, the other good thing about Dominic is he has grey eyes, so I can use this book for the BINGO challenge!

Re your first spoiler, Cath. I definitely do not think that gently bred young ladies of this era would speak or even think such words, or in many cases even have heard them. But many readers don't mind this 'modern' kind of HR, and for those who can accept those kinds of little details, this kind of book can be quite enjoyable, no doubt.

I didn't read enough of the book to be able to comment re your third spoiler, but I agree that plot points/characters that you struggle to believe in can make for a frustrating read. Hope the story gets better for you.

It took me a few days to warm up to the characters. It felt like the plot was a very typical plot and I didn't see how the two main characters would ever run into each other again after their first meeting. But, after their second encounter I was myself "besotted" with their interactions. I loved reading about their relationship. I knocked off one star for the minor plot (it was so predictable I really only skimmed when the author wrote on that story line). All-in-all, I am marking this as a favorite and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

When she gets it right, Amy Rose Bennett shines, in my opinion!!

Lauren | 1385 comments I agree it took a while for me to like these characters, but the author did win me over. so it's worth sticking with it through the end.

message 16: by Cath (new)

Cath | 370 comments This particular book didn't work for me but I enjoyed reading a new-to-me-never-heard-of-before writer. I did appreciate the author's richly detailed descriptions of the surroundings & environs so it felt like the characters lived in a specific historical era. Also, I enjoyed the frequent mentions of various books that would have been known to people during that era.

Artemis was crafted to be a heroine with a modern sensibility, and b/c Dominic too had a modern sensibility - for the most part, for a man of that time period - (view spoiler) for me this meant there was very little interpersonal conflict between the two. Most of their issues revolved around (view spoiler), and so ultimately, while I thought these were two worthy people, their romantic journey felt a bit too flat for my taste.

Peaktopeak | 34 comments This was pretty good. Bennett was completely new to me and I always love finding new authors. In general, I found this entirely too modern for a historical romance. And I agree most of their obstacles stemmed from external sources. But I enjoyed seeing them resolve them and come to appreciate each other.

Such good points on Aunt Roberta, her choices were confusing to me. I saw her as more of just a prop, something else existing so that Artemis could appear independent and forward-thinking.

But, not sure yet, I may try another by this author.

One of her best ones, in my opinion, is How to Catch a Sinful Marquess, with a very sexy, scarred Scot. It is lower steam, but I think the relationship that develops between Hamish and Olivia is what makes it for me.
