Maybe: 15 (not lyric but title of song)
Maybe: 17?
Maybe: 18? Most LGBTQ books have been banned

And then there are 1, 19, 29, 36

There are some fantastical characters in here, including an angel, so you could perhaps use it for "mythical creatures."

The story centers on Door and what happened to her family, so you could say it's loosely "about a family."

And at least some editions of this book include a map of the London Underground.

Bluebird Bluebird could be alliteration or color in the title

Sight for Sore Eyes could also be alliteration

Oh, boy — that’s a tough one. Have you gone through the personal prompts (birthday, initials, meant to read)? Would a friend like it? Did you buy it secondhand or from an Indy shop? Other than that, the only prompts I can think of are a book about a family or a past prompt about the seven deadly sins (multiple sins come into play in this book).

Brandon Harbeke | 696 comments Kat wrote: "Help! I have to read Agatha Christie's Five Little Pigs for a book club. I'd love to slot it somewhere for this challenge. Any ideas whether it fits any prompts?"

My library has all of the Agatha Christie novels in black hardcovers with just the title and author in gold on the front, so you could use a book with just text on the cover for the prompt. Five Little Pigs might also be a song lyric, as many of her titles are based on nursery rhymes that people have made into songs.

It must be on BookTok! It's also alliteration in the title. And VERY LOOSELY could fit the previous category of "LitRPG" (as well as many other previous categories of course - there's ALWAYS a previous category that works).

I’ve seen it mentioned on BookTube numerous times, so I’m sure it’s also on #BookTok.

I used it for the BookTok prompt. It could fit the song lyric prompt as well - while the title is a quote from Shakespeare, that quote is sung in one of the songs (Take a Break) from the musical Hamilton.

I tried to read The Parable of the Sower a few times and couldn't get into it. But then I read it last year in graphic novel form, since the graphic novel edition specifically won a Hugo. That did the trick. It you're interested in reading the graphic novel for it, it could be a past prompt.

I read Firekeeper's Daughter last year as a book with two languages. There's a prompt for that too. Also, the sport category that someone else mentioned above.

The Girls I've Been sounds from the description to be good for a queer lead - it sounds like she's at least bi, if not a lesbian - and there may be a love triangle there with her ex, based on the description, but I haven't read it.

Those all sound like great titles!

They definitely fit "mythical creatures." I think the "retelling of a classic" is a much weaker fit; Riordan takes many established characters and back stories from classic myth, but he's not retelling a particular story here.

Courtney Bocci | 2 comments Hi! I've been slacking about assigning books to prompts, but mostly I read what I want and then slot them in if they fit. To that end!

Remarkably Bright Creatures, Shelby Van Pelt
Sharks in the Time of Saviors, Kawai Strong Washburn
A Deadly Education, Naomi Novik
Catherine House, Elisabeth Thomas
The Once and Future Witches, Alix E. Harrow
The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music, Dave Grohl (not a celebrity memoir, I already have one of those)

Thank you!

They all fit categories, the question is whether they fit categories you still need to fill!!

Remarkably Bright Creatures, Shelby Van Pelt - BookTok, debut, family, friends recommended ...

Sharks in the Time of Saviors, Kawai Strong Washburn - BookTok (again), family (again), celebrity book club, debut novel (again), and I haven't read it but I think there are mythical creatures?

A Deadly Education, Naomi Novik - booktok, mythical creatures, previous category

Catherine House, Elisabeth Thomas - booktok (basically they are all going to have been mentioned on booktok), previous category, queer lead

The Once and Future Witches, Alix E. Harrow - booktok (again) and maybe historical fiction?

The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music - booktok again, and yes it's a celebrity memoir, and maybe your friends would like it.

message 136: by Ron (last edited Apr 12, 2023 04:13PM) (new)

Ron | 2708 comments I haven't been satisfied with my reads because 1.) I have a lot of fiction and 2.) many of the prompts seem to be geared towards fiction which is unfortunate, especially as a nonfiction reader.

So I'm trying to dig deep for nonfiction books that could fit.

*****

These are the ones I'm currently struggling with (the ones in bold are ones I'm really trying to find):

1.) Mythical creatures

2.) Forbidden romance

3.) Retelling of a classic

4.) Song lyric in the title

5.) Love triangle

6.) Written during NaNoWrMo

7.) Based on a Popular Movie

*****

The fat lead and historical fiction are ones I most likely won't do.

message 137: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) | 780 comments For song lyric in title, maybe you could find a memoir by a musician/song writer, such as Coal Miner's Daughter by Loretta Lynn or Wouldn't it Be Nice: My Own Story by Brian Wilson? I’m sure there are plenty of such memoirs that have a song lyric in the title.

message 138: by LeahS (last edited Apr 13, 2023 01:21AM) (new)

LeahS | 491 comments Also [book:This Boy part of a trilogy of Beatle lyric titles of autobiography by this former British politician. Homeward Bound: The Life of Paul Simon.

Mythical creatures: The Greek Myths. This book might also work for 're-telling of a classic'.

For 'based on a popular movie', I'm planning to read We'll Always Have Casablanca: The Legend and Afterlife of Hollywood's Most Beloved Film.

Both love triangle and forbidden romance would lend themselves to history books/biography e.g. Death and the Virgin Queen: Elizabeth I and the Dark Scandal That Rocked the Throne; a book about Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson; a book about George IV and Mrs Fitzherbert.

message 139: by Ron (new)

Ron | 2708 comments Thanks Heather & Leah. I appreciate not only the titles, but the directions/concepts which could lead me towards other book suggestions within those ideas.

Bea | 648 comments Ron, I am wondering if a book about a search for Big Foot or Yeti would fit mystical creatures. And forbidden romance? What about a book about a gay man...maybe a biography of Harvey Milk?

Monsters Among Us: An Exploration of Otherworldly Bigfoots, Wolfmen, Portals, Phantoms, and Odd Phenomena
In the Valleys of the Noble Beyond: In Search of the Sasquatch
Harvey Milk: His Lives and Death

Oh, I hadn't considered going the route with LGBTQ+ people/couples. That's certainly a possibility.

I think Big Foot or Yeti would work. I'm wondering if ghosts or aliens/ufos would fit for that as well.

message 142: by Bea (last edited Apr 13, 2023 05:28AM) (new)

Bea | 648 comments And, Ron, don't give up on some of the fiction.

For Historical Fiction, it is set in a specific time of history. Couldn't you read something non-fiction that would fit..like the Roaring 20s or the Gold Rush? I read a non-fiction book about the Chicago World's Fair that I think would have fit.

For fat lead, how about a biography about a fat comedian, if there are such. Or a book about the issues of being fat? (I have no suggestions for these, just brainstorming.)

message 143: by K.L. (new)

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 847 comments Ron wrote: "I'm wondering if ghosts or aliens/ufos would fit for that as well.."

It kind of depends on how you are defining the term "mythical." If you're going with the dictionary definition, which is "occurring in or characteristic of myths or folk tales," then aliens and UFOs would be a bit of a stretch. If you're defining it as "fictitious" or "imaginary," then they should be fine.

Ghosts would definitely work, however, since they appear in folklore all over the world.

Biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs would be a great option for this prompt. You might also check out books on body positivity.

I should think a book about John Candy, John Belushi or the comedy duo of Abbott and Costello would work for that.

One I can think of is Ghost Hunters: William James and the Search for Scientific Proof of Life After Death by Deborah Blum. She has many other books that might interest you as well.

message 149: by Lori (new)

Lori | 23 comments Ron: If you like the idea of reading LGBTQ+ non-fiction for the forbidden romance prompt, perhaps consider one of Jill Liddington's books about Anne Lister. Her Nature's Domain: Anne Lister and the Landscape of Desire is more of an overview of Lister's life and how she navigated British society to live according to her own desires. The other two: Female Fortune: The Anne Lister Diaries, 1833–36: Land, Gender and Authority: New Edition and As Good as a Marriage: The Anne Lister Diaries 1836–38 are deep dives into Lister's diaries.
