I am about 2/3rds into the first part - and intrigued so far. Although I’m kind of familiar with video games - all this yak of the older ones are a bit over my head but I don’t think that should affect my overall understanding (I hope). The idea that to play with someone else is more intimate than sex is an interesting one that I’m definitely going to be pondering.
yeah, that part was funny. I'm old enough that I remember the games they're referring to lol. but yeah, I don't know if it really takes from the story if you're not familiar. I am quite enjoying it as well, although I don't know if we needed the teacher/student thing that went on when she was in school...but yeah, good so far hey?!
I haven't been able to pick it back up again but will be planning on catching up over the next few days!
Definitely still behind since I just only finished the second part but I’m really enjoying it. I have a gut feeling this book is gonna make me cry. I am loving the friendships and definitely do NOT like Dov.
Part 3: For as much as they go through I’m curious why Sadie still has mistrust for Sam in regards to Dov. I also was not entirely surprised by the story of the accident. It’s super sad and tragic, but not entirely a surprise. I enjoy this book still even though it feels like nothing has really happened but I am definitely hooked on these characters.
Part 4: I found it interesting the chapters were like 1A and then 1B for the first time. It feels relevant but not entirely sure how yet. I’m not going to lie but this book reminds me a bit of A Little Life - obviously less traumatic/triggering but similar nonetheless. I’m still enjoying the retro vibes and don’t think this could have worked as well if texting and social media and the like were super prevalent like they would be if it was set now.
Part 5 & 6: I like that we’re getting a bit more of the other workers at Unfair and their work/lives. I’m also not terribly upset about Sadie and Marx versus Sadie and Sam. The end of this part though makes me nervous - what happened in 2005…?
I've been a terrible buddy reader but I finally finished this one! I agree - I completely see why it was a major winner across the board this year. As mentioned, this does remind me of A Little Life. Both are about a group of friends from college onwards and their lives overall in regards to how friendships change and relationships change and just the whole gamut. The BIG difference is the amount of trauma. A Little Life has a plethora of trigger warnings (for a reason) so it was refreshing to get a similar perspective but in a far less traumatic way.
Not that this one was completely clear of trigger warnings, they were just far more mild and the focus wasn't on the trauma but instead how one may move past it. This is one that I will definitely be recommending across the board to as many people as I can. There's the nerdy aspect, the relationship/love aspect, the family aspect, the friendship aspect, the grief aspect - just so well rounded on life and growing up.
