♞ Pat Gent | 629 comments Ok for the broken pieces task?

message 3: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60060 comments I don't think that classifies as something broken. The feather is morphing into something different.

message 4: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments For task 3, pregnant character or newborn: The Last Chairlift--clearly for much of the book, the son is an adult, but it appears that the pregnancy and how it came about are central to the story, what do you think?

message 5: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60060 comments I think it will be fine from the book blurb.

Viji | 1513 comments Need book help for the task:
Read a book about the persecution of witches.

I have already read The Heretic's Daughter.

Thanks.

Have you read Hour of the Witch? I loved it.

Janice (jamasc) | 60060 comments The one I really liked was The Mercies. Did you try searching for witches in Listopia. Here are a couple, Best of the Salem Witch Trials (specifc to Salem), and Witch Hunts in Historical Fiction. You might find something of interest in those lists.

message 9: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4493 comments I second The Mercies Viji!

message 10: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4493 comments Janice would The Witch's Heart work for persecusion of witches? Angrboda is burned at the beginning as a punishment from Odin. If that one works I may reread that one because it is one of my favorite books

Thanks a lot, Janice. I tried the Listopia but did not get the links referred by you. I could try either The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave or The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec (provided it is approved). I got misled by the MPG:LGBT and did not connect it to persecution of witches.

No. It's more focussed on mythology with her relationship with Loki

The Mercies will work by The Witch's Heart won't.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments 3. Two words, total 14 letters: Time off work for new moms
Read a book that has a pregnant a character or a new born baby in it

I'm considering Call the Midwife: A True Story of the East End in the 1950s I'm assuming there will be plenty of new born babies, but only for a mention and none of them belong to the MC. Is that still okay?

Yes, there are lots of new born babes in that series. I really enjoyed it.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think I added it to my TBR a long time ago because you enjoyed it so much :)

Janice (jamasc) | 60060 comments I just finished The Great Witch of Brittany and it will fit the persecution of witches task. I wished I had realized it or I may have held off a bit. I gave it 5 stars. It also talks about the discrimination against the gypsies as well.

Viji | 1513 comments I have A Secret History of Witches by Louisa Morgan and Janice suggestion The Great Witch of Brittany by Louisa Morgan made me to hunt for this in my collection. Has anyone read this?
Would this work for the task:
Read a book about the persecution of witches?

Thanks.

message 23: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1513 comments While stacking the books selected for 2022 Challenge, I came across
Witchstruck (The Tudor Witch Trilogy, #1) by Victoria Lamb which has been in my TBR for a long time. The synopsis mentions "there has never been a more dangerous time to practise the craft, for it is 1554, and the sentence for any woman branded a witch is hanging, or burning at the stake."

I think this book also qualifies for the task:
Read a book about the persecution of witches

If allowed, I could read this and eliminate one overdue number from my TBR.

Thanks.

message 24: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60060 comments I don't know about Secret History of Witches, but Witchstruck sounds like it would work.

Viji | 1513 comments Task:
5. Read a book with something broken in pieces on the cover

Would any of these books work for the task?
1. Reckoning An FBI Thriller by Catherine Coulter 2. The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side (Miss Marple, #8) by Agatha Christie

Thanks.

message 29: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60060 comments Either will work, Viji.

message 31: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5199 comments Just being paranoid, but rereading this task: Read a book with a female title in the title (dame, Lady, Duchess), i start wondering. Do you want dame, Lady or Duchess in the title or any other title, for example Countess or Princess will work?

message 32: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19284 comments To clarify Esther's question further - Would more common titles such as Mrs. work or are speaking more of titles of position above that.

message 33: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60060 comments Others will work as long as they are established titles for a woman. I missed the "etc" in my examples.

message 34: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19284 comments Janice, I think our posts crossed. Just want to make sure it's clear whether you were including that in your "others" or not.

message 35: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60060 comments Why not? Mrs is a title too, and people would likely argue that it's a title of position. We'll go with Miss, Mistress, etc. But let's not do Mother as in Mother Earth.

What about Catholic titles - such as Mother Teresa or Mother Superior?

Okay, that's a religious designation. I was thinking no to the use of Mother as a certain past vice president does with his wife.

Viji | 1513 comments Task: Read a book with a female title in the title (dame, Lady, Duchess)

Would His Dark Lady by Victoria Lamb His Dark Lady work for this? Should the title be followed by a name?

Janice (jamasc) | 60060 comments The title doesn't need to be followed by a name.
