2023 Annual Challenge Primer
Never cross with you Janice. It will be something to look forward too and to be honest, I'll be more in form for it in a few weeks so your timing suits me perfectly.
Hmmm, "Please don't be cross with me". And the December Monthly Challenge started off with a mention of a word puzzle and words "cross"ing. Puts me in mind of cross words and word puzzles. Just thinking out loud. I'm usually wrong.
It’s such a huge challenge, who could be “cross”? Relax and know that we just appreciate your hard work and it gives us something to look forward too!

Well - the December challenge is based on a word puzzle. So, you'll correct about that. Let's just say that my avatar for 2023 is going to be interesting.
You guys are good at this! I never get the clues, but I always read your guesses and think they are very good!
Give yourself some grace, Janice. I'm run-plumb-ragged from this 2022 road trip thing. Tongue dragging worn out with one book to finish. Take your time, sweet friend, and take care of YOU first. Everything else can happen when it happens.
Cross -- like cross roads, maybe. A pick a direction thing? Choose A or B - A goes here, B goes there. Like a progressive challenge. Hmmm.... That would be a nightmare to moderate, so ... probably not.

I like Roz's suggestion. The December challenge often ties in with the yearly challenge. Maybe it's not tasks but you start of with one book, the next has to 'cross' somehow with it. Could be with a letter that has to be the starting letter of the next book, but could maybe also be with something else.
Although I think we did a linking challenge once so not sure if this would be too similar.

I think you've got it Peggy. Like the titles might have to cross on a letter like a chain. Maybe not just titles, characters or something else. Looking forward to whatever it is!

Thanks so much Pat. We did a similar annual a number of years ago. It was about connections and your book had to connect to the next book in some way. It was one of the first annual challenges and I've forgotten how it was run.
I remember the one where we had to link large books and short books together somehow. I spent an enormous amount of time on graphics.Almeta's Voluminous Volumes and Miniature Matchmaker
I don't know what Janice called the challenge. 2014???
Take your time - you'll be across it all in good time. No one wants to hit you with a right cross, or cross the floor to the opposition. Good things come to those who wait, and it's not your cross to bear. Leaving you with kisses XXXSorry - best I could do. Don't be cross :)

There was some very creative links that year. :)

I don't ..."
It was something about Chunksters. Some readers avoid big books, so we allowed they could read 2 or 3 books and call it one book if it totalled more than 500 pages.
We won't be doing that one again. Or the series one. Ooof!
The series one was really fun. The chunkster was harder but I enjoyed it too. After a few of them I realize that I have a harder time with those with tasks than those with rules like reading titles in alphabetical order or series or even the chunksters lol
Looking forward to a new challenge. Again, I failed completing this one, but I've got a feeling that I'll make it next year.

Internally crying about the series one by far my favorite.
It was just that new books would be added to series throughout the year and I recall that it was a bit of a pain to track it all. Plus there were series within series like The Realm of the Elderlings which was made of about 5 smaller series.
Looking forward to the 2023 challenge. This year I could not complete the challenge due to some health issues. I hope to complete the 2023 challenge. Thanks, Janice, for the interesting challenges.
I still have two books for my yearly challenge this year to finish, Viji. I seem to be waiting for the last minute with all my reads this year.
Kristie wrote: "I still have two books for my yearly challenge this year to finish, Viji. I seem to be waiting for the last minute with all my reads this year."I'm sure you would be able to complete the challenge, Kristie. I have nine more books to complete Badge 3!
Kristie wrote: "I'm planning on it, Viji!"Advance congratulations, Kristie, for completing the challenge.

I've noticed that Janice has stopped making threads in the 2023 Annual Challenge Help folder after #12. What can we deduce from this?
Janice wrote: "I really dislike the ruling that you can only make three new threads at a time."Oh I know. It's the worst.
You can refresh the page and it goes back to first status (I think - or at least it USED to.) We all pay a price when the trolls and spammers get hold of a site. ::sigh::
Peggy wrote: "I've noticed that Janice has stopped making threads in the 2023 Annual Challenge Help folder after #12. What can we deduce from this?"And no new threads since 29 November - perhaps there are only 12 categories?
Janice wrote: "I really dislike the ruling that you can only make three new threads at a time."I know. But! It's been 9 days since you're last post. You could have made 27 more! So that made me wonder: is it the rule? Where you busy with other things? Or is this useful information for us? ;-)

Yes, exactly!
Interesting. Maybe it's indeed more like categories instead of tasks?
Shannon SA wrote: "One category per month, each category contains multiple tasks?"I think we may be onto something here. 12 months - possibly particular celebrations or historic events?
Are there always 5 levels to the challenge or does it vary from year to year?
Oh, nice thinking Shannon and Pat!@Pat: not sure if it's always 5, but there's always something to accomodate both slow and fast readers.
Janice wrote: "I really dislike the ruling that you can only make three new threads at a time."Me too! The spammers just post in existing threads most of the time anyway.

Oh, that's a great idea Shannon - a category a month. But that would be 12 badge levels. Pat, we used to just have one badge, but there are speed readers in the group (ahem). Through the evolution, having 5 badges works to accommodate all readers so that the challenge is doable for all. I'm still trying to figure out how many books per badge, and could end up with 4,5, or 6 categories. We'll see.
The tasks are all written. I just have to format it for the threads and write out the scope of the challenge. I have trouble writing since my stroke, so it's taking me a bit longer.

So to entertain you till it gets posted, I'll entice you with a hint. Please don't be cross with me.
