Wallace Stegner is such an amazing writer, and for me Crossing to Safety is his BEST. It is sinful that he is not on our shelf. :o(

I have a re-reading challenge of my own going on this year. I picked ten books that I have been saying I will re-read for years and decided this is the year I do it. I have completed one of them, so I am on target. I think re-reading is a wonderful thing. I used to do it often, but now I feel I have so little time left that I can hardly afford to read things I have already read.

What a good idea, Sue! Yes, we meet on the second Thursday of each month which will be September 14th. And I will read it before that and be prepared to discuss on the 14th. So August would be a good time to read it! I'd be happy for you to join in :)
Especially since you've read Stegner before (which I have not), you may already have a flavor for him and some insights I might miss.

I am going to pencil this conversation into my reading calendar and try to get back to you to confirm closer to time.
And, of course, we will be talking about other books over the next seven months (September seems so far away, but will probably be here before we know it!!)!! Also, as Lori mentioned, if it would win one of the polls or come up as a buddy read we might both want to read it sooner! We'll just see how that goes :)

Looking forward to reading this book with you!

I feel the same way, Sara -- "Too many books, not enough time!!"
There certain books I think I should probably reread, but I just don't set it as a priority -- as you have done!

May I ask: What are your 10 rereads that you are working on (if Sue doesn't mind us using her thread -- maybe she'd like to know too!)?

These are the ten I chose, with permission to change my mind.

Count of Monte Cristo
Girl in a Swing
Great Expectations
Shogun
For Whom the Bell Tolls
The Stone Angel
Moby Dick
Leaves of Grass
Paradise Lost
Portrait of Jennie (did this one in January)

Sorry, Sue, for intruding on your space!

message 55: by Terris (new)

Terris | 4469 comments Thanks, Sara! We will keep those in mind, won't we, Sue?! ;)

message 56: by Sue (new)

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments No problem Terris and Sara. I love your reread choices, Sara. I read Paradise Lost for the first time last year and was blown away by it. That and Count of Monte Cristo, Great Expectations and Moby Dick will be on future re-read lists for me. Moby Dick especially because I know there is a lot I missed. The rest I haven't read yet but I know I have a great chance of liking them if you are rereading them!

Terris, that sounds great to read it the second half of October. Maybe Lori can fit it in then too!

message 57: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5541 comments Well this is inspiring, Sue. Not sure I could commit to re-reads, but I should. And I love the books you chose to re-read. Housekeeping is one I've actually read twice, and still feel I could read it a few more and get something out of it each time.

Enjoy!

message 58: by Lori (new)

Lori Keeton | 1510 comments I’ve not read any on Sara’s list yet. Gosh so many books to read! But I still want to make time for rereads. I’d definitely read Crossing to Safety with you and Terris!

Thanks, Kathleen. I'm dying to have an excuse to buy Housekeeping. I need to find it in that cover with the train and fog. It's such a good representation of the mood of the book.

Yes, Lori! We have a plan thanks to Terri's book club to motivate us!

I hope you noticed that it's August, not October Lori. It will be great to have a group!

Oh good! Didn't want to start with a mix-up! I'm really looking forward to Stegner since several of you have given his writing high praise. Looking forward to reading with you!
Also, if we see enough interest we might try to make it a buddy read for August :)

Those are ambitious rereads, Sara! I have read 5/10:
The Count of Monte Cristo (would like to reread)
Great Expectations (might reread)
For Whom the Bell Tolls (will NOT reread)
Moby Dick (will NEVER reread)
Portrait of Jennie (would absolutely LOVE to reread)

As you can see we have some different opinions on those -- but no problem with that!! ;)
Enjoy your rereading and hope you get through it this year!

I was thinking the same thing, Terris. I'm in another buddy read for the 1st half of August so hopefully we can specify the 2nd half. I messaged Lori to make sure she knows it's August too.

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments I've finally updated this one and I've completed Challenges #4,5,6, & 7.

I planned on participating in the Old and New and I have one left but it's War and Peace! Going to give it a try still but should complete by reverting to my alternate if necessary

I'd really like to complete one of my Fiction/nonfictions because I LOVE this category but it's not looking good.

message 69: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5541 comments Congrats on all your completions, Sue! I haven't been able to get the fiction/non-fiction done either, though like you I love the idea. Hope you read War and Peace sometime if not now--I think you'll love it. I know you'll find just the right book(s) to finish out the year. :-)

I agree with Kathleen. If you cannot get to War and Peace this year carry it over, it is an amazing read.

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments Thank you Kathleen and Sara. I got started on W&P this morning and I like it already. My goal is to read around 77 pages pages a day and finish in 3 weeks.

Thank you for the invitation Sue. I am pondering it. I looked at the bookshelf and I have read 44/255 = 17.25% of the shelf, so there would be plenty of room. I'll keep it in mind.

Lori, I was hoping to get just one of 5 in Fiction/Nonfiction. I think 4 is still great!

George P. | 422 comments Congratulations on completing challenges. A lot of people think War & Peace is a difficult book, but it really isnt, just very long (& a lot of characters). Many younger teens could read it if they have the stamina.

Thank you George. I agree that it's not a hard read at all especially if the edition has the character list. My Everyman 3 volume hard covers made it physically manageable as well. I loved it and plan on reading it again at some point.
