Vitaliy Kravets | 43 comments Hi. When I read the topic, I had one intetest question. Are there any conditions for classifying novels as a classic? For example, there are some modern novels (early XXI) that have been on the bestseller lists many times and have gained general popularity. Can they be classified as classics of literature? Or little known on a global but cult for a some country - can such books be classified as classics?

Ps. Sorry for the potential spelling errors. It's still hard to communicate in a foreign language)

You can decide what you think is a classic for your challenge. Generally in this group we use books before 2000 as classics.

Vitaliy Kravets | 43 comments Interesting. In my opinion, some books after 2000 could well be considered classics (and vice versa). However, I myself can not offer any better classification, so I will not be clever. Always resented the incomprehensibility of the concept of "book's classic")

“′Classic′ - a book which people praise and don't read.”
― Mark Twain

My addition to this would be "a book which a person of influence praises and convinces others to read."

Vitaliy Kravets | 43 comments Squire, I will take quotes for use. Moreover, both Twains and yours) If you don’t mind, of course)

Go right ahead. My quote was inspired by The Catcher in the Rye. lol

Vitaliy Kravets | 43 comments Squire, this is good! I read this novel in December, but it didn't inspire me nothing, lol

Paula W I would like to personally thank Katy for how kind and amazing she has been in answering all these questions to make sure we all know what we are doing. It can be confusing for newer members to the group, or for old members who haven’t done a challenge before. WE LOVE OUR MODERATORS! Thanks so much for keeping us on track, 🥰

Paula W If I may, another question. The G1 square (classic that didn’t win a poll)… as in it didn’t ever win a poll and is not on the bookshelf? Or maybe it won once and then didn’t win a revisit poll?

Paula, I know I'm kind of stepping in here, but I see that on Message 8 (on Page 1) of this thread there is an explanation for the G1 category and also a link to the Group Polls. When you go into that it shows all the polls and the voting. So it tells the winners of the polls, but also all the losers too. I think that will show you which books are eligible for this category.

Hope that helps :)

Great, so it looks like even the re-read polls count. Good deal. I will do The Scarlet Pimpernel for that space then. Thanks!

Kathleen | 5529 comments For I5, from the Group's Favorites thread, the thread includes non-classics. Just checking to be sure--is it okay to use a non-classic favorite for this Bingo category? Thanks!

I have tried it via audiobook about 3 times and I simply cannot tolerate the narrator. I am normally very good with audiobooks and they hold my attention, but not this one. So I will need to actually read that one. Looking forward to it, since I have tried so many times.

Oh -- I hate when that happens! The narrator makes so much difference. I think you'll like the print version. I read it in 1986 -- before audiobooks (I listened to my first audiobook -- cassette tape, of course -- in 1989 and fell in love with them!)!! I enjoyed it very much in print. Also, it's not very long :)

Teri-K | 1163 comments Suggestion for B -4 about art is A Month in the Country by JL Carr. It was a really good, beautifully written and short book about a man struggling after WWI who gets a job restoring a mural in rural England. I loved reading it and will revisit it, I'm sure.

I have a question about the biography, memoir category - would a book of letters by one person work? I'm trying to juggle things in.

Matt, just wanted to give you a tip. Don’t limit yourself to only paintings or drawings for this category. Art can be music, theater, dance, jewelry making, architecture , etc. I bet there are some short biographies of your favorite musicians, or a theater project that is short-ish. My copy of The Glass Menagerie is 105 pages, and it is not only a play but it is a play with tiny glass animal sculptures. 😀 Also, if you Google “The Glass Menagerie pdf” a hundred different sites will come up where you can read for free. It is really popular with the college courses, so most universities make it available for free online.

I read Scott Weiland’s memoir Not Dead and Not for Sale a while back and liked it. It was less than 300 pages. Goodreads lists it as 288 pages. It wasn’t great, but it was quite good. And I am at the age where Scott was all over my life when I was in college, so the nostalgia was definitely there.

I am thinking about reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and other Classic Novels for the Oceania N5 square. Under Oceania counts too, right? I've never read the entire version, just excerpts. Oh, of course I've seen movies too.

Thank you to everyone who played Bingo this year. Last day to finish books to fill in your squares. I hope you have had a very good reading year in 2023.

See you all in 2024.
