Interesting voting this year. We had a clear winner right away with Parade's End but second and third were neck and neck and in the end First Circle beat out Gravity's Rainbow. The Randomizer chose The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll which was only fitting as every year that one has been nominated so it finally has it's year.

We will be reading
1st Quarter: Parade's End
2nd Quarter: The First Circle
3rd Quarter: The World According to Garp
4th Quarter: The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Very excited by this: 3/4 I haven't read this time, as opposed to only 1 last year. I'll reading everything except Garp (although it is one of my favorite books, and would be willing to mod).

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
Thanks Amanda, I am putting you down for moderating Garp.

message 26: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments sweet! Thanks Kristel :)

message 27: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 568 comments Garp is the only one I've read too. My first and favourite John Irving.

I know that there is no way I'll keep up with all the quarterlies, but I'll make an effort to read Parades End. I have a gorgeous two volume edition from the Folio Society waiting on my bookshelf.

I am going to attempt Parade's End and The World According to Garp.

message 29: by Dianne (new)

Dianne | 225 comments Great selections! I have read Garp before, but I'm going to try to read the other ones.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
I have not read 3 of 4 either so it will be a good year. I've read Garp and I doubt that I will join in but I will wait and see.

message 31: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments Like others, I have only read Garp so I will be reading 3 out of 4. I may even reread Garp as it has been a long time.

message 32: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I have read First Circle and Garo - but a very long time ago and with no discussion, so I will try a retread if I have time in what is going to be a busy year.

Pip | 1822 comments Where to source Magrolu? It’s not on Kindle, Audible or Open Library, nor Project Gutenberg and Amazon are selling a paperback for $50 something!

If you're looking for Maqroll, Pip, I did find a link here on Open library that worked for me (although our availability might vary by region):

I don't think there is any audible. I would try Book Depository and see if you can find one there. They ship anywhere, free. I think it is only available as a paperback.

It is $32 through book depository to the US, not sure about what it would cost for you but I think this is an option. Have you checked for used books? Can you use Better World Books or Abe Books?

Of the four, I have read The First Circle (and it's excellent). I should be able to read the other three, although it will be a bit more difficult to source Maqroll; but I have time on my side. I'll mostly read our annual read during the second quarter.

Karen | 422 comments I have read Parade's End and it was very good. I own Garp so will definitely be reading that one.

message 41: by Rosemary (last edited Dec 08, 2022 02:40PM) (new)

Rosemary | 715 comments I ordered a copy of Maqroll from eBay, but when it came, it was only 288 pages (three novellas). So now I have ordered another book that is four novellas - a different four, from what I can see on GR - and I will hope that together they make the whole thing!

message 42: by Dianne (new)

Dianne | 225 comments Oh goodness Rosemary, that stinks! I have had such good luck on eBay finding obscure books that I can't find elsewhere.
