Yesterday's Echo (Rick Cahill, #1) by Matt Coyle

Summary

Rick Cahill was never convicted of his wife's murder, but he was never exonerated either. Not by the police. Not by the media. Not even by himself. Eight years later, police suspicion and his own guilt remain over his responsibility in his wife's death. When he meets Melody Malana, a beautiful yet secretive TV reporter, he sees a chance to love again. When she is arrested for murder and asks Rick for help, the former cop says no, but the rest of him says yes and he grasps at a chance for redemption. But Rick's attempt to help turns terribly wrong, and he becomes a suspect in the murder and the target of a police manhunt. On the run, Rick encounters desperate people who'll kill to keep their pasts buried. Before Rick can save himself and bring down a murderer, he must confront the truth about his own past and untangle his feeling for a woman he can never fully trust.

I will be moderating the discussion of Yesterday's Echo by Matt Coyle.

I am a big fan of PI mysteries.

What I like is that they can work outside the limitations of police departments to get justice for victims.

I also enjoy settings, in this case La Jolla, California.

When I began reading this series I had never been there, but I have since driven through it after the 2020 Left Coast Crime in San Diego.

I hope you enjoy reading book one in the Rick Cahill series.

Pam (pmunro) | 176 comments I just finished listening to the book and was left wanting more substance.

Star Gater (star-gater) Disappointing. I found the story to be long and drawn out, not for story content, but word count.

Looking foward to Behind Her Eyes.

Sorry you were disappointed. Thank you for commenting.

Karen (karen94066) | 364 comments This is a first person account, much like traditional PI stories.

"I fought the pull to intervene. it was none of my business. If it didn't affect the restaurant, it didn't affect me. I didn't know Melody. She was a look a cinnamon scent, a tug at my gut. My days of interceding in strangers' affairs were long past. You needed a badge for that. Or empathy. I didn't have either. Not anymore"

Do you enjoy being in the mind of a narrator?

L.G. (upl8) | -273 comments I finished reading this book last Thursday.

This is an easy-to-read police procedural about a disgraced former policeman in Southern California. A great deal is learned about Cahill's past, so this book does a good job setting up the protagonist for the next book in the series. I'll probably enjoy the sequel more with his planned change of employment.

I agree. I'm looking forward to it.

It's okay. I am going to read the next in the series.

M (voicetrocity) | 3 comments I'm 160 pages in, and have gotten to the point I'm now invested in knowing what actually happened.

Karen (karen94066) | 364 comments Rick is a restaurant co owner and a gentleman, but he still has the instincts of a policeman. Why else would he defend Melody against Peter Stone? Is this his fatal flaw?

Karen (karen94066) | 364 comments Is it too much of a cliche that Rick sleeps with Melody?

Karen (karen94066) | 364 comments I love dogs as companions, but in so many thrillers, the threat to harm the dog is overwhelming. Does this stop you from enjoying the plot?

Karen (karen94066) | 364 comments At the end of the book Rick decides his next profession is to be a PI.
This transformation will be the focus of the rest of the series. Do you see any other path for him?

Karen (karen94066) | 364 comments Thanks for reading with me. I hope you enjoy this series.
