Karen L. Welcome Wanda! Thanks for sharing a little about yourself :) Some of us are going to be reading, Celebration of Discipline, by Richard Foster, around the second week of February. You are welcome to join us :) Just look for the Disscussion topic and jump right in any time.

Wanda, I hope that you find the love of Christ and the joy of reading great classics of the faith here. May God guide you and your family to a church where you will have peace and feel at home.

Our family had a beloved church close years ago and found ourselves church hunting. We looked for a year before we found the sweet little church where we indeed feel at home at.

Hi Wanda, yes there a discussion for Chapter 3 of "Celebration of Discipline." You can find it under the discussion category of "Non Anglican Authors." By clicking on "all" you can see all of our book discussions and other discussions. It took me a while to learn to navigate around and do things on the goodreads web site. Try and see if you find "Chapter 3: Prayer"

Filmmaking is great! So many possibilities for great and fun work.

Karen L. Hi Therese! Welcome to the Anglican group. You have a great book list. I noticed that you had some books by "Youth With A Mission," authors on your list. My husband and I served with YWAM many years ago and loved that time. I enjoyed Floyd McClungs's book, http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15...

Thank you! :) Really looking forward to the recommendations of this group. I am currently reading through religious (and some not so religious, despite the covers -- so the old adage is true!) books as a part of my Lenten journey this year. I'm hoping to continue reading 1-2 religious themed books per month, with an emphasis on Episcopal/Anglican authors and theologians.

Hi Victoria , I love the season of Lent and the way it helps us slow down and spend time renewing our spiritual life. Lent is winding down but there is still time for some devotional poetry. On our group bookshelf there are some poetry books written by two of our group members that might be nice lenten devotionals. I highly recommend them. The author/members are Skylar Burris and Cindy Erlandson. Both have written some wonderful poetry of faith.

T (that_t_girl) | 2 comments Thank you for the recommendations! I will be sure to poke around the bookshelf some more and also check out the 2 authors you mentioned.

Hi Greg, I hope I get answers to these questions (cause this is something that I'd like to try with my home church): How has your theological book discussion gone? Has it worked for your church? Do you meet in homes, or the church?

message 119: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 7 comments Sorry I lost the time to keep up with this thread; we moved suddenly. I like to think of sudden changes as God cleaning house and rearranging our lives again. It will be a while before my life settles enough to fully participate in Goodreads and this thread, particularly since I have most of my possessions in storage for the summer till the second half of this move.

I do look forward to returning someday.
Thank you for you understanding.

R. Thomas Richard | 6 comments Hello - Is a non-Anglican welcome in the group? I'm Roman Catholic, and an author. I'm wondering if any here are interested in discussing/exploring the themes that concern me so greatly that I've worked among Catholics in these areas. These are areas of Faith that are essential (certainly for Catholics) and so maybe some of you find them similarly important, even urgent.

These are the themes of my four books:
1) traditional Catholic spirituality, found and lived by saints of the Church for centuries - the growth of the interior life from asceticism on into mysticism as described in the traditional "three ways" or "three ages" of the interior life.
The Ordinary Path to Holiness
2) this same spiritual journey as seen outlined in the prayer "Our Father"
The Interior Liturgy of the Our Father
3) encountering Christ in Scripture, following the ancient method of lectio divina
Encountering Christ in Holy Scripture with Lectio Divina
4) encountering Christ in the Mass.
The Mass in movements - Conversion Consecration Communion
I don't want to "push my books" if there no interest - but obviously I believe they can be helpful.

Anyone interested in pursuing any of these themes?

You are most welcome in the group. I myself am interested in the first theme. Pehaps others may share if they have interests.

God Bless!

Hello Karen. Here is a page from my website:
http://www.renewthechurch.com/Renew_t...

If you read down or scroll down to the graphic about half way down the page, you will get a very simplified picture of the traditional understanding of the interior life, as journey. A brief discussion follows the graphic. That will give you an overview of what I'm talking about. The first book I cited presents that spiritual theology and then presents it as applied, so to speak, in various Christian ways: in prayer, in Scripture, in suffering and in dying...

Thomas

Karen L. R. Thomas, This group tends to slow down in mid Spring and summer. What I mean by that is that I've noticed that most members aren't as active in the group or online then (probably due to nice weather and wanting to be outdoors). If you can wait at least a week or two, you may get another response from other members.

A. Johnson (a-charity-higgins-johnson) Hi, group friends,
from Indonesia.
FYI we are moving here for a short time (but I probably wouldn't be really settled till August.)
Meanwhile, I found out BOOKS is one thing I have to buy and carry. Kindle books are ok, but I want "real" books, too..
I return in a week and that's when the mad buying spree will commence. Welcoming suggestions.

Thanks, Karen. FYI, I've started a discussion on the book The Ordinary Path to Holiness here:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/9...

Feel free to visit/post if you (or anyone reading this) are interested. The book can help a sincere Christian understand and grow in the interior life - the spiritual life - the life of prayer - through the experienced wisdom of our saints. That wisdom is a treasure that, I am sure, the Lord wants us to benefit from on our own personal journey to Him.

Thank you for your welcome.

I guess I should introduce myself. I am a member of St. Aidan's Anglican Church in Nicholasville, KY. We just transfer membership into ACNA from AMiA. We are a small church plant going just over 2 years. I am in the beginning of discernment/formation process to become a Deacon. I am also a Third Order Anglican Benedictine Monk in the Company of Jesus. I am married to a wonderful woman and we have a baby girl just over a year old. I hope to start Ph.D. studies in the fall of 2013 in Early Church History with a focus on martyrdom and the cult of the saints.

I enjoy church history, theological, and spiritual formation books. I also enjoy epic fantasy, sci-fi, and I am starting to get into some urban fantasy.

Other than reading I enjoy hiking, playing Euro-style board games, movies, podcasts, geek culture, and having a nice glass of scotch, a pipe, and talking and laughing with friends.

I look forward to getting into some of the discussions going on in this group and getting to know more of you.

Karen L. Hi Chris, Welcome to the Anglican Group. I have been busy getting ready to move and so I have not been on goodreads much lately. When things settle I hope to get back to my reading.

My family attend a little Anglican church in the city. We had an Army Chaplain attend our church and serve as deacon.

It is good to have you with us Chris!

Hi Chris - I'm curious and wondering - as a recent Anglican seminary student, were you given anything/much on the traditional Catholic spirituality of the "three ages" or "three stages" of the interior life of the soul? If you weren't, you might (as one who reads theology) really be blessed to look into this.

message 141: by R. Thomas (new)

R. Thomas Richard | 6 comments The discovery of this spiritual theology radically changed my own life of prayer, and my understanding of my own inner communion with God. After I began to research the matter, and realized how "hidden" and unknown it was to so many Catholics and other Christians as well, I wanted very much to share it - and I wrote a book, my first book, to try to do so. So there is that one: The Ordinary Path to Holiness by R. Thomas Richard , also available in Kindle and Nook format.
Among the classic authors, St. John of the Cross very precisely presents his works within this theology, and so his collected works would certainly present it - he especially focuses on the dark nights that are "between" the major stages of the journey. Many writers among the saints include the stages, but for a well-developed theological description by a teacher, the best would be: The Three Ages Of The Interior Life (2 Volume Set) by Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange . Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange also wrote a brief little paperback the summarizes that two-volume treasure in this book: 3 Conversions in the Spiritual Life by Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange

Both of Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange's works are available free to read on-line:
The 2-vol. set: http://www.christianperfection.info/
The brief pb: http://www.ewtn.com/library/SPIRIT/3W...

Sorry to give such a long answer!

R. Thomas,

Thanks for posting those books and sharing the free links! Still unpacking and painting after moving. I can't wait to get all the book shelves set up. I haven't been reading since we moved a few weeks ago. It will be good to find my favorite books and read again...soon, I hope!

Karen L. Hi everyone! I have noticed some new faces in the group since March 2013. Welcome new folks! Feel free to introduce yourself to the group and jump into any discussion that interests you! I hope that this group encourages you on your journey of faith.

My family and I have recently moved and also moved my elderly Mum with Parkinson's disease into our home. We have had lots of changes and so I have not been reading as much as I like to. I hope now that things are settling down for our family, I can get to reading the books that have been unpacked.
