SOLVED - Looking for a zombie novel from the '90s that starts with a zombie walking at the bottom of a lake

Several years ago I came across a book about a living dead apocalypse that seemed to involve zombies quite different that your classic "George A.Romero" style creatures. I began reading the book but lost it on a trip. The opeining chapter focused on the main characer's father dying, comming back to life and then walking into a lake on his property. The main character leaves for a time, returns to the lake and sees his father continuing to walk aimlessly at the bottom. Sound familiar to anyone?
