Glad you found your book series, Anna. Here's the link for Jaclyn's find - the first book: Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett.

Hi im searching for a book that, if I remember correctly is the first part of a trilogy. Its set in a world where objects can be inscribed to act a certain way. The protagonist has the ability to listen to objects and thus figure out as well as alter the inscription (it is revealed later on that she has a metal plate of sorts in her head that was violently inserted on a farm that she managed to escape by setting it on fire)
The protagonist loses a friend, who is also her middleman sending her on missions, in the beginning of the book. We accompany the protagonist (maybe beatrice?) on one of her missions: she is to break into a protected site to steal something from a ruling house. She manages to steal the little box she was instructed. When she looks inside it she finds a talking key called something like Jeff. The key can open any door as it turns out and so she opens the door to one of the cities (there are 4 or so houses in the kingdom and the protagonist lives outside the protection of any).
In a later book I think they go into a mountain and have to fight some enemy there. She makes friends with the librarian/historian of one of the houses and their student, who later on becomes her love interest.
