I didn't say I had a problem with her. But she needs to be explained, especially in light of (view spoiler) I want to read the book that explains it. That's not a problem, that's interest!

Mordechai Housman | 65 comments I'm reading a book called Book of Humorous Quotations (Wordsworth Reference),, and I found there this quote: "Whoever wants to know the hearts and minds of America had better learn baseball." -- Jacques Barzun (1907-2012, he was an historian and an expert on baseball, classical music, and much more, according to Wikipedia).

I don't think it is so true anymore, not like when I was young, for example, in the early seventies, when we Yankee fans knew the Yankees stunk but still loved them anyway.

In the early nineties I worked in a Jewish book store, which featured many books about Jewish culture and our heritage, . One day, two friends, a non-Jew and a Jew, walked into the store. During our conversation, as we spoke of how kids today know only video games and don't play ball anymore, the non-Jew joked that sometimes he beats up teenagers just to teach them about their cultural heritage.

I was very much enjoyed reading about the passion for baseball that built up in this era. I was also really impressed with the skill level and athleticism described in the book. There was a lot of physicality described here that makes me admire the early players. I also like how high scoring the games were. That would have been a lot more entertaining than the current version of the sport. Sam mentioned that there was none of the stalling that goes on between pitches like we have now either. I would have liked to see such a fast paced game.

I liked the supernatural elements overall. It was interesting to think that a ghost might (view spoiler)

I can understand. My brothers and I never did forgive the Dodgers for abandoning Brooklyn. Way back when.

You actually remember them moving? That was when? In 1957? Okay, no reason that's impossible. Except that I was born in '62, and I know that there was no world in existence before I was born. ;)
