Harm no human…

A hired gunslinger, William Jessup Brady lived his life with one foot in the grave. He believed that every life had a price. Until the day when he finally found a reason to live. In one single act of brutal betrayal, he lost everything, including his life. Brought back by a Greek goddess to be one of her Dark-Hunters, he gave his immortal soul for vengeance and swore he’d spend eternity protecting the humans he’d once considered prey.

Orphaned as a toddler, Abigail Yager was taken in by a family of vampires and raised on one belief- Dark-Hunters are the evil who prey on both their people and mankind, and they must all be destroyed. While protecting her adoptive race, she has spent her life eliminating the Dark-Hunters and training for the day when she meets the man who killed her family: Jess Brady.

A gun in the hand is worth two in the holster…

Jess has been charged with finding and terminating the creature who’s assassinating Dark-Hunters. The last thing he expects to find is a human face behind the killings, but when that face bears a striking resemblance to the one who murdered him centuries ago, he knows something evil is going on. He also knows he’s not the one who killed her parents. But Abigail refuses to believe the truth and is determined to see him dead once and for all.

Brought together by an angry god and chased by ancient enemies out to kill them both, they must find a way to overcome their mutual hatred or watch as one of the darkest of powers rises and kills both the races they’ve sworn to protect.

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Personally, I liked this book a lot. I'll admit, it took me a while to warm up to Abigail, but at least it worked out in the end. =)

I've always liked Jess a lot, ever since we first met him in Zarek's book (his rant to Zarek about the Thanatos situation, remains one of my all-time favorite scenes. Especially when he calls Otto, "Guido the Killer Squire from Jersey". XD) Okay, I also kinda have a fictional crush on him--I think it's the motorcycle that does it. XD

So far, most of the Dark-Hunters we've read about, have either lived in ancient or Medieval times, or else were pirates, so I enjoyed reading about a Dark-Hunter born in the Wild West. =) All those sayings that Jess comes up with ... funny, but I really do know people who talk like that.

As I'm going through the re-read, I'm finding myself paying more attention to the story about the Four Guardians, especially the bit about the need for balance and "The Dark One". To me, that sounds like Noir they're talking about there (but I could be wrong ;D).

Andy ... oh. My. God. That scene where he mourns the damage done to his Audi ... priceless. XD

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yea, I've always liked Sundown since he showed up as Zarek's only friend in Dance with the Devil. Definitely epic and willing to give others a shot/chance.

But I'll admit there was some confusion for me with all the Dark One stuff going on. As I was thinking it was tied into the Native American lore stuff. And yet not. So could have been about Noir like you said Charlotte.

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments LOL, I'll be honest, it kinda confuses me too. I know it's cleared up (somewhat) in Time Untime, though. =)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yea, true. And then the Guardian came and there was another question mark moment there too lol.

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Okay, so I'm going to try to get a few discussion points going here (yes, I'm shamelessly following Amaya's example, lol), and I would love to hear others' thoughts on the following:

1. Abigail I understand that several readers were unhappy with her--and like I said before, it took me a bit to warm up to her--but I personally was fine with it, in the end.

2. The Four Guardians. Some readers mentioned that the Guardians simply added confusion to an already vast world, while others mentioned that it added extra depth. I personally think it adds depth, among other things. =)

3. The bonus scene (birth of Sebastos). I've seen it mentioned that this scene alone was worth the purchase of the book. Did you like it or not? If so, what part did you like best?

As I said before, looking forward to hearing others' thoughts on all this! =)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Abigail was my total love to hate/not quite understand til the end character. Cause given her back story, I was like oh snap, the Apollites have gone cuckoo and trained up somebody else to take out the DH's. But as the story progressed she and Sundown had something much deeper going on than what met the I and I fell for her.

The 4 Guardian thing did kind of confuse me as well. I mean on top of the born again stuff going on with the main characters as it was. And then Abby killing one of them I think. It just was like what in the world to me after a time. So could anybody break all that down please and how/if they will be effecting future outcomes of things as we progress in the series?

I'll admit the birth of baby Seb was the first turning over a new leaf that we've ever seen of Artie. Mind you, I soo wanted to shake the life out of Ash for going to her to help his wife give birth to their kid in the first place. But at least Artie didn't hold it against either of them and did a good thing. I think we even got to see a touch of Ash's green eyed monster a bit when he saw Nick was in Artie's bed too.

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Oh, I definitely had a WTH? moment when Abigail went to sacrifice herself, and Choo Co La Tah was all, "Okay, that's all we needed." XD

I was completely flipped out by Artie's behavior during the birth of Sebastos. Yep, I was with Ash on this one--"Who was this, and what had she done with Artemis?" And I, too, wanted to scream when Ash went to Artie, but I can also see that he was desperate.

My personal favorite part of the birth scene, though, was when Katra recounted what had happened when she had given birth to Mia. Between Apollymi telling Sin to boil water (Good LORD that image was hilarious!), Sin and Artemis trying to kill each other ... and the ultimate highlight, when Simi tried to barbecue the heifer goddess. XD

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Okay, now about the Four Guardians:

With the Four Guardians, we see that there are two good and two evil, which is necessary for balance. Basically, if we have an all-good or an all-evil world, the world would be destroyed. These Guardians are in charge of keeping a lid (so to speak) on the plagues created by the Dark One. The Four Guardians as of Retribution are: Old Bear, Choo Co La Tah, Coyote, and Snake. Abigail killed Old Bear, thinking that he was Ren. This has upset the balance, allowing Coyote to release the plagues that Old Bear was guarding. True, Snake was killed, which (sort of) restored the balance, but not completely--because there are still unguarded jars of plagues.

New Guardians won't be selected until 2012, during the Reset.

Like I said before, the story about the Guardians seems a bit similar to that of the Primals--6 total, 3 light, 3 dark. If I read it correctly, killing one of the Primals would upset the balance in a major way. Also, it seems that there must always be 3 light and 3 dark Primals, or else the balance is upset. I'm sure that we'll learn more about this as the series goes on. =)

Now, spoiler time: =)
(view spoiler)

Hopefully that helps a bit. =)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Thanks so much for the clarification Charlotte. I'm definitely going to have to do some re-reading at some point to make sure I have this down as well.

Definitely a lot to process.

Shari-amor | 5275 comments It was just way too much new info for me. I'm up on greek, norse and celtic mythology but native amefican lore, I know nothing of that. The stories were too confusing to me.

I'm still not down with Abigail. And for me it's along the lines of I understand she was played by the Apollites but I was horrified at her executing dark hunters. I was like "she did whaaaat!?" She's the person I'd be polite to but wouldn't be friends with.

I don't remember what I thought of the four guardians. To me they were the version of Cam, Azura, Noir and Rezar. Dark and light beings protecting the world.

I loved Ash's son birth. It was definitely my fav part. I do remember being bewildered at Artemis' s behaviouR But it was a pleasant surprise. It actually was when I started to soften towards her and see her.
Even though it was a tense moment, I giggled when Ash freaked and went full demon God.

Always gotta come correct with Artie. I think any time you should ALWAYS be in demon mode when around her and Apollo.

I totally agree with ya as well Shari-amor on the info dump. And most especially with a whole new set of lure it was definitely a lot that flew over my head. In particular when they had to go through and find that portal as well. Was really like wait there has been a portal like set up out there for a long as time and we just NOW are learning about it? Duuuuuude.
