Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Wow! You guys were not kidding. Desperation in Death #55 was rough to read, but very good!!! I liked the cameos and I have been noticing much more references to old cases lately, which I also appreciate. Mavis sure showed a strong and unyielding side, and although it surprised me, it looked good on her!!!

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Just finished Encore in Death #56 ... A more traditional mystery, but enjoyable still. She really writes great guest characters. The ending was a bit too convenient, but I am willing to ride with it:)

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Nearing the end there Choko...how many still left?

I started this one today. I'm about four chapters in (give or take).
I would be shocked if the rival b!t@# is the culprit, but I hope karma finds a way to smack her in the mouth for being such an awful person - I mean, personal feelings aside, someone just died; show some respect.

One more - Payback in Death (#57). Then Random in Death is scheduled to be released on January 23, 2024 (which would make the buddy read date: Monday, January 29, 2024)

So fast... Nora Roberts releases 5-10 books a year, once you add in her romances/etc... and she says she doesn't use ghostwriters...

James Patterson has so many co-authors on all his ongoing series...

Felina | 2416 comments Is this where Stephanie Plum is happening?

message 1714: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35263 comments Mod
If it's happening, it'll be in it's own thread... I don't know when it's starting, or the concrete plans...

My focus has been on finishing In Death, and the people most interested in it haven't piped up much, except to say they want to do it, when I made a general comment a month or 2 ago about it, since it had been 6-8 months since the idea was originally floated...

I assume, if it's gonna start, it'll probably be after New Year?

I am one of those people who would like to participate when it's set up. I am entirely new to the series. Are they as bingeable as In Death? Can it be handled the same as this thread?

And I would agree with starting in the new year.

message 1716: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments Okay. I’ll watch for it. I’m on book 13 or something so I will just be hanging out for a while.

And they are super bingeable.

message 1717: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Yes, we should definitely set up a thread like this one. They are bingeable and not too deep, so it would be comments like the ones here. I am totally about starting it at the beginning of the year, same format...

message 1718: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Since I can get the books from the library, I'm in for Stephanie Plum as well...

I have about two more chapters to go in Encore in Death (#56), but I won't be able to finish it before work.

I'm not shocked at the suspect. I was suspicious for a little bit, but it wasn't a strong feeling, and with the whole infiltration thing, I let it go. I can't even say I should have "trusted my instincts" because it wasn't that intense.

I'm going to listen to as much as I can now and hopefully be able to finish during lunch.

Closing in on the end, now, and it reminds me of numerous previous mysteries, which seems inevitable at this point... (view spoiler)

message 1724: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments Since the rest of my planned December reads will most likely be shared with my daughter (the jury is out on Vorkosigan, which we won't be able to start until next week), I'm beginning Payback in Death (#57) today.

I can't believe I'll have read 50 of these novels in a single year!!
I had my doubts at the very beginning, but I've loved the experience so far!

The fact that the first chapter of this one has had me in happy tears, however, makes me concerned about who will be getting payback for what!?! (view spoiler)

message 1725: by Monika (new)

Monika | 2312 comments Wow! I'm more than half of series behind I think... One day I'll catch up LOL!

message 1726: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Don't worry about it, Monika! Just take your time:)

Have I told you guys, how happy all the moms sharing the books with their kids are making me?:)))

message 1727: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Ditto-ing Choko--that's so wonderful to be able to share books with your kids or parents!

Also dittoing--take your time and Enjoy, Monika!

Definitely some vertigo on realizing just how long this series is... and how we've been burning through it...

jk... it IS the end of the road for the weekly readers, tho...

@Choko - Thanks. I feel so fortunate that one of my 20-year-olds likes hanging out with me enough for us to read together! LOL

@Nirkatze - We really have binged the bejesus out of this series, haven't we? LOL

@TI - Ha Ha! LOL

I was out of the house most of yesterday and snuck in a few pages when I could.

As the story stands so far, the payback hits family-adjacent, but my gut is telling me there might be more. I'm hoping my gut is wrong.

I just finished this morning. All caught up, and now, we have to wait seven weeks for the next one. I'll miss this in the meantime.

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I finished Payback in Death #57 ... For some reason it kind of felt flat for me... Maybe it's just me, but it was a bit anticlimactic for the last published book so far ... Still, I hate it that we have to wait now for the new books... I will really miss the reliability of a good book we had with this series...
