Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments It is me!!! I am the one sawing chaos with the numbering system!!! Actually, it's my fat thumbs! I am so sorry! Devoted in Death is #41!!! I am so sorry!!!

Iain, you are right. There is definitely some of that influence! Either way, the crazy always disturbs me, particularly when it takes that frenetic form .. *shudder*!

Finished 41.5... Another trippy one! I think since we have established that sensitives and mind manipulation are real at this point, it was easier to accept as a premise...

Nope! LOL, they own other entities as well, but those were the ones listed in the announcement of their acquisition of Subway.

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Hahaha! There it goes! Roark is beginning his empire! He is doing it somehow from the future, by first discovering Time Travel, and going back to our time, before he was born, to start his enterprise. I wonder if what is known here as The Urban Wars is really what in the future The Time Police calls The Time Wars... I would not be surprised if we find out St. Mary's was involved somehow:))))

message 1556: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 20964 comments LOL OMG Roark Capital? It exists!! And I love your cross-series conspiracy going now, Choko!

Looking forward to hearing more about Baxter in Devoted. I love how each of the characters gets fleshed out.

I just started Brotherhood in Death (#42).

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Brotherhood in Death #42 ... WTH??? Mr. Mira! Eve questioning him was hard. I love the little tension between her and his daughter, and I loved the way he made hot chocolate!

I just read that scene. Eve would probably stun me for saying this, but she is her sweetest when with the Mira's

OMG! The doll conversation! LOL LOL LOL

message 1560: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Hahaha!!! She is even making me freak out about dolls at this point!!! And that murder is gruesome! A lot of anger. I wonder what could be the reason - it has to be personal!

I thought I'd missed the doll section, since you guys were talking about the start part... but then it hit me in the middle... and boy did it hit me... the narrator is so great at Eve's horror :D

I just read this scene (Chapter 15); Chocko and I were talking about a conversation that happened earlier in the book - I don't remember what chapter it was, but it was shortly after they had visited the Mira's (and had hot chocolate).

Eve's exclamation was on point and hilarious!

THE FUTURE IS NOW!!!

Speaking of the Roarke stuff, I was shopping today, and saw this:

Refillable Capri-Sun shaped juice pouches...

Put a bit of soda in there, and you've got classic In Death vending machine soda tubes...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Brotherhood in Death#42 ... So good!!! I am also kind of in love with the Miras! Both of them! Another one where the "victims" were very difficult to justify standing up for... And I understand that Eve would have wanted them to get to jail by the regular route, but they wouldn't have had the evidence if everything hadn't happened the way it did... Just sad, really...

^^^Agreed^^^ with all of the above.

I know that to do so would have been completely unprofessional and is certainly none of their business. Still, some part of me wanted Eve (view spoiler).

I read #43: Apprentice in Death, last night and this morning... this is one of the 3 star ratings from my previous read-through...

This one is definitely sensational, (view spoiler)

Loved all the emotional beats tho, with our recurring cast of characters...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Just read #41 Devoted in Death yesterday. That opening! I'm continually amazed at Robb's ability to make me HATE someone so quickly... (view spoiler)

Totally agree with everyone's notes--I hope that nice Arkansas detective comes back too! Though--I'm also with Eve... why ISN'T it pronounced ar-Kansas? Why didn't I ever notice this before?

I was so glad (view spoiler)

Because of the emotional beats I'm more likely to rate it a bit higher... But agree with you about the apprentice. Also the end (view spoiler)

This week's entry, Echoes in Death, is much better, I think...

Also, a memorable opening, that I still remembered from the first time I read it... didn't remember all the twists, tho...

I think this one shows how much Eve has grown/changed since book 33 and book 1...

message 1580: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Apprentice in Death #43 ... I am rating it higher than Iain for sure, but I totally agree with Emily on Bella's development - a big stretch for sure! But I loved the actual police work that went into this case. I also loved the care that Rourke showed for Summerset. I love those moments between the two of them. He is his true father and I think Eve should treat him more like her father in law than just the man around the house. ... But at this point that might be too unpredictable for all of them...

Timelord Iain | 35263 comments Mod
They like and depend on their dynamic, at this point...

It wasn't great in the early books (Eve was projecting her own father issues?), but it course corrected through books 10-20, I think, and was solid by the time Roarke's ex came to town and messed with him, and Eve & Summerset had their little heart-to-heart... that's my interpretation, anyway...

message 1582: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments You are right:) I just want her to admit that he is her father in law, but that is just a quirk of mine, definitely not necessary for the series itself...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Read #41.5 Wonderment in Death yesterday. It felt longer than a usual novella for some reason. Don't really have many thoughts about it, but I liked the Alice references. Though any Alice inspired story that fails to use Jabberwocky isn't doing it right, IMO.

Did my read of #45, Secrets in Death, today... loved it... there's something about doing these reads consistently, that removes the issues I had revisiting the series after a long break...

I went ahead and upped every 3 star book rating to 4 stars :D

EXCEPT for Fantasy In Death... the VR one... as a computer science graduate, I refuse to give it 4 stars :D

LOL In contrast, I loved the teacher one--Innocent in Death, I think? But that is the danger of reading/watching media that overlaps on our field of expertise...

Finished #42 Brotherhood--ya'll weren't kidding about the emotional impact. And the DOLLS!! LOL I'd forgotten that Eve had that phobia... I loved all of the repeated gaffs, from Even slaughtering another few idioms to Peabody's McNabby ass-grabbing and even the room redesign--which felt like a new Trina.

I was surprised that the history setting was (view spoiler)

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Jumped right in to #43 Apprentice in Death. I like how quickly Eve figured out the hotel--and the manager was cute.

I loved when the Captain got a ride in Eve's car. I was kind of hoping for a bigger reaction though.

I am also somewhat tickled that the escape plan involves Alaska.

About halfway through, and starting to get a sinking suspicion... (view spoiler)

message 1593: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Finished #43 Apprentice... things didn't pan out the way I thought, and while I think my idea would've been a bigger shocker (and I'm glad @Emily, that I wasn't alone in my suspicions) I guess it would've been a little too close to the previous child-killer book... I was glad that that previous killer was mentioned too--made for some nice continuity.

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I agree about #43...

I also started Echoes in Death #44 ... About half way through and I feel so bad for the obviously abused lady... I really hope it doesn't come out she had anything to do with the murder... She breaks my heart! Also, I don't know why, but the work partner of the first couple's husband gave me some bad vibes. He immediately went on my suspect list...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Echoes in Death #44 was very good!!! And yes, the end twist was surprising, but led to showing again how much Eve has grown as a character... And I am still completely in love with Mira!

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Started Secrets in Death #45 ... Eve not realizing how much her boots cost, and Dr. Bones clocking her on it, as well as their conversation about what Eve was holding against her, was hilarious! And having a very unlikable victim really makes the investigation more fun:)))
