Gobbled up #35 Delusion right afterwards. Nothing really stood out to me in this one, except for the new hiding spot for Eve's candy. I wonder how long this one (under her chair) will last? Though I guess it was nice to see (view spoiler)

New ones come out every February and September, like clockwork… there’s a reason there’s 60ish books released since Naked in Death came out 33 years ago…

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Wow... I didn't realize it's been 30 years, but that makes sense.

Naked in Death came out in 1990... 90s and 00s was a big time for long-running series to start publishing... so many of the hardcovers that appear at walmart & other stores with small book sections seem to have started back then...

In Death, Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, Alex Cross, Stephanie Plum, etc... anything with 20+ books basically...

I decided not to wait. I'm a moody reader that way.
Anyway, the first chapter proved my suspicions to be correct. (view spoiler)

Oh, and we meet a new recurring (?) character.

Nyssa | 1651 comments Concealed in Death (Book #38) - Chapter 7

Eve and Roarke have the "How old were you the first time?" conversation. Roarke was such a young buck he actually embarrassed himself. Lol, amusing scene!

Edited to add: I just started Chapter 10 - I am only going off of my gut (because isn't that how police work works *grin*), but I think (view spoiler).

Edited to add (again): Now, I'm questioning my gut...

message 1467: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments I ended up reading straight through and finished late last night.
My gut was incorrect, but it did not take much longer to understand the gist of what happened.

However, even after realizing the real culprit, there was still a twist (or two) to untangle. It made for an interesting case in the end.

We didn't get as many character connections as in the past few books, but what did transpire was deep and meaningful. We learn more about Mavis and just how much love and trust there is between her and Dallas.

Speaking of Dallas, her asking why someone would name their children after cities made me laugh out loud. The importance of a name is addressed again at the end of the story.

Mr. Mira is freakin' adorable! A doll of a man! He exudes love and caring. I know Feeney is seen as Eve's defacto dad, but I think Mr. Mira also shares a portion of that connection now.

Did the same thing, Choko--finished #36 Calculated and jumped right in to Thankless... dittoing everything you all have said... I don't think I've quite hated any of the perps so much right from the beginning... and that is so scary, Choko, how you knew a case similar to this, and have had to deal with such people...

It feels like a train wreck, I can't look away... I'm definitely super emotionally involved... and I find it interesting how it is being contrasted with Thanksgiving, and how Peabody is picking up on a lot of things that Eve hadn't yet, even though she doesn't realize she has--I'm up to 7/13 hours in, and (view spoiler)

All of Eve's dream scenes remind me of the TV show Medium.

Also loving the little character moments--putting together Thanksgiving... Eve buying lip-dye for Peabody... the "date night"...

Nyssa | 1651 comments The character moments have become my absolute favorite part of this series. I now read it for Dallas, Roarke, and crew - the mysteries and murders come in second.

Nirkatze | 20964 comments I hear you--the character moments are what remind me of my favorite police procedural tv shows... hooked by the mysteries, stay for the characters...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments I keep finding little moments I like in Thankless... Juana the Pawn Shop Clerk--I hope she is one of those random people who gets a mention later on... I'd like to know how she does in her new job.

message 1480: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Still in Thankless--but this is more a general thought. Every time Eve (and Roarke) exercise... it makes me feel more like Ivy in Slouch Witch... lifting the remote counts as exercise... stretching for the remote is like yoga...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Finished #37 Thankless in Death and this one goes in the 5 star pile for me. I was tearing up during the (view spoiler) ceremony. Such a special moment, to see the effect of all the lives they touched.

Debating whether to just keep binging and try to catch all the way up (I think we're on #40 soon?) or to switch to another BR...

And yes, the family I knew, everyone blamed it on him being adopted, but I think he was just not right in the head. Not like developmental disability, just something was missing... The whole neighborhood was affected by the gruesomeness of the situation... *shudder*

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Just finished Thankless in Death #38 too... That was sad, but I loved the new "fashion plate" character! She is smart, and beautiful, and pretty amazing herself, and it is hilarious how insecure women like her make Eve feel and how territorial she gets. She feels the people in her life are "her people", and she doesn't deal with newcomers into that circle well. That one is a surprising trait for her, very Asperger's, which she is not, of course. Reminds me also of when Galahad got all bushytaled and started hissing at her when she smelled of that white panther:)))

I also felt like there (view spoiler)

Did you mean Concealed in Death?

I agree Eve has moments of feeling insecure when a woman is both "girly" and at the top of her field (she has trouble reconciling both aspects), but it's usually that recognition of talent that wins Eve over.

As Eve doesn't trust easily, for obvious reasons, I don't find it surprising that she's territorial - I think I would be more shocked if she weren't. Although, I was amused that she didn't immediately understand Galahad's behavior after spending time with the panther.

I also agree with your comments on grieving over the loss of potential.

And looking forward to #38 Concealed, with y'all's previews...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Read #37.5 Taken and am really liking the recent spate of classic story inspired shorts. I feel like putting these in a separate category from the earlier straight-up paranormal shorts--it's fun to think about how he original story compares with the case. From Jekyll & Hyde v. Frankenstein, to Hansel & Gretel, and looking forward to Alice in Wonderland... I'm waiting for an Edgar Allen Poe short, or even a Jane Eyre one. How about a Narnia one? Wardrobe in Death. Nevermore in Death.

I've started #38 Concealed in Death and just learned a new word, thank you Peabody! Zaftig--meaning "full bodied and plump," usually used to describe women. I've always gone with "Rubenesque" myself.

I really find it interesting how each book, each case... it's a pretty easily recognizable police procedural trope. This one is (view spoiler).

message 1492: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 20964 comments 6 hours in to #38 Concealed--DeWinter reminds me of Bones--though without the social quirks. But the way she so enthusiastically jumped in to the science behind her conclusions was amusing. And I love Peabody's (view spoiler) hobby.

message 1493: by Choko (new)

Ooh! Nice! I am looking forward to more cameos!

I am currently reading Chapter 9 - Feeney just gave Eve a gift. How is this bringing a tear to my eye!?!

I don't know what sucks more - when the victim is a jack@$# or when they're good people.
