I started a year or two after you (2011/2012), but also because I saw the TV show.

I wish they had done a better job, and I would LOVE a reboot.

I haven't read the first one, though.

The show felt like the budget dictated the magical artifacts, lol... main selling points were the casting choices (recognizable actors)...

it's been like 8 years since the first one came out, and I knew I wasn't going to start it until I knew the 3rd book was on the way, because that was already well into his slow years... he started writing the next Dresden book in April, I think, and hopes to be done this month... I'll believe it when I see it...

EDIT: website says next Dresden is 10% done so far...

that was awhile ago... book 11... previous dirty cop book, and the one where the IAB detective and Roarke get into a fist fight I think, when detective reveals feelings he had for Eve...

Never trust the fact Choko has rated a book already... half the time these (books in general, not just In Death books) are re-reads... unless she just added a new read date :D

Nyssa | 1651 comments I've started Kindred in Death (Book #29). The NYPSD keeps getting hit!
Anyway, I'm reading Chapter 4. Eve has just met with Morris; he realizes this hits close to home for Dallas; does he learn her truth?

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Yeah Rituals in Death seemed like a full case shortened to novella length.. i could easily see that one given a few complications and more details, and would be a pretty good full length book. But I agree with Nyssas review about Eves hard-headedness

I think i might be hitting a lull with these last few, but theyre definitely still comfort reads!

I am reading chapter 19; they just did the holo-confrence-interview-thingy.

The judge's mother cracked me up!

And now Roarke is bribing Eve with cake.

I do love how they slide bits of levity into the darkness.

message 1273: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21000 comments Ah, thank you, Nyssa!

I finished #27.5 and moved on to #28 Promises in Death--binged while cleaning yesterday. Oof, that was a kicker. I did love the bachelorette party though, and especially how (view spoiler)

I totally did not realize Morris was a young hottie though... my brain image of him had a crochety old man...

Yes! I loved that part too!

Nirkatze wrote: "I totally did not realize Morris was a young hottie though... my brain image of him had a crochety old man..."

I didn't have him as elderly or crotchety (lol), but I did see him as older than he seems to be.

message 1275: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I always thought of him in his 30's, good looking in a subdued way, confident in his knowledge and that to me made him hot:)

message 1276: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21000 comments So I just google wiki'd Morris, and apparently he's about 10 years older than Dallas, and his first name is "Li"--my brain was going "Lee" from the audio--his wiki descriptions sound like he has East Asian heritage, which jives with being raised Buddhist and a brother named Jin too, as well as the queue hairstyle being a bit of a Qin Dynasty stereotype. LOL So now he's an anime bishounen mortician.

message 1277: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Hahahaha! I never thought of that:) I always imagined him kind of like Rupert Giles (Anthony Head) from Buffy, but I guess he looks more like Will Yun Lee or Takeshi Kaneshiro:))) That's OK, I don't mind:):):):)

I'm starting to have trouble keeping the books separate... but checking out the description at the link helps! I really liked how that one explored the past...

Do you have a break-book in mind, Narilka? Otherwise, no harm in just jumping in to the next one... ^^

message 1282: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments I started Fantasy in Death (Book #30) while reading Legends & Lattes. I finished the latter this morning, and I loved it!

I am reading Chapter 5 of the former; I was shocked at the murder in question. It seems particularly gruesome, even though the murders from the last 2 or 3 books were also horrible.

From what we learn in these early chapters, the victim and company needed a lot more guidance; either that or it is very much an inside job.

Timelord Iain | 35277 comments Mod
Legends and Lattes is great... read it twice already...

Fantasy in Death is definitely a gut punch murder book, for those involved... closer ties between victim & perpetrator... not a stranger...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I am just on Kindred in Death#29 now, and boy, you guys were not exaggerating, this murder of the 16 year old daughter of the illegals cop, was just too much! Very brutal and disturbing! And no matter how much we want to think a victim is a victim and we need justice for all of them, there are some, like this girl, that hit you with the desire for revenge, because when true innocent people are killed, you hurt for their light being snuffed out, no matter the age, race, or anything else... You just can't help but hurt and take it personally...

This is a rough one!

I only got a few pages into Indulgence in Death (darn having to work for a living), and in those few pages, they made me cry! Yeah, yeah, I am a softy. But Roarke's reaction to Eve's gift.... *sob*

The books have a rhythm through a number of different case styles... and we're ramping up towards #33, New York to Dallas, where Dallas has to return to Texas and confront her past head-on, due to a case... and the next big Icove-y case is soon... I forgot there was going to be a movie.

This case (Indulgence) reminds me of a movie, but I can't think of its title. I was going to say Trading Places, but that's not right. TP was a modern-day Pygmalion. This is a different troupe.

There's so many murder movies it's hard to say... there's one where a hitman uses a taxi cab to drive around town and kill a bunch of people... I think that one is Tom Cruise & Jamie Foxx...

There's nothing on the wiki, or a quick google search...

Eve is investigating the Strangers on a Train angle, but I doubt it... that has already happened once/twice... you could also associate it with that previous case where the 2 rich kids have a point system...
