Started #20 Survivor in Death: Roberts/Robb is really good at writing innocent kids (and overly innocent not-so-young characters)... makes it a pain to watch them be murdered or witness murder...

Yes!!! She does innocent so well, it breaks your heart! Like the 21 year old who was in love with the dude in #19... Not a kid, but still full of hopes and dreams and so dramatic in the manner those people are... Also the kid that stole the wallet and Eve caught:) And really just about all the kids that show up... She does evil well too though...

Just recharged my iPod for another 5hrs of listening... finished Ninth House this morning... 30 minutes left on Survivor in Death... then on to Seize the Night... such easy reads...

Just finished #18 Divided in Death "Twisty and different" is a good description. I like Emily's take on the title coming from E&R's relationship issues, I was also think of it maybe being opposite of UNITED States, since (view spoiler)[ HSO agent was acting divided from the country and the rest of the law enforcement, in a way. I was also a little tickled that it did have spies and brothers in it, if not the twin-thing--and that the brothers did switch places, so my first thought on the title was sort-of on-track in a weird way... I actually feel like the relationship part was the least interesting for me on this one--but then, I was listening and was just kind of like "well duh. Why didn't y'all get this sooner?"--as Emily & Mavis said, (view spoiler)[must be the dick. (hide spoiler)] But I did love Eve's climactic confession scene. That was so good! This is back to 4 stars for me. Not enough side characters.

Fast reads are what allow me to do tomes... binged Memories of Ice today... tomes slow down my reading... especially epic fantasy tomes or space operas... this year, I'm trying to do a few tomes each month, a few regular length new series, and some easy re-read BRs... and also find time for new releases...

Also finished #21 Origin in Death today! (view spoiler)[ Clones! This felt very different to the previous books. I REALLY liked Eve not being a total by-the-rules cop and letting Diana and the baby go along with Avril (Is that the name?) and her clones...

Also we get another girls day! Eve and Rourke being terrified by the birth coaching is just hilarious. And I don't remember who said this earlier, but Eve really does think of being pregnant like that scene from Alien. So funny!

And the family bits were really nice too. It makes me very happy that Rourke found his family and they can get to know and love eachother. And Eve is trying her best even while being FREAKED out by kids :D (hide spoiler)]

This is a bit of a lightning rod book of the series, for future events, I think...

I started this today, which is to say, I'm almost done with #19 Visions in Death ^^

I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were two angles to the "Visions" aspect--once the bit about (view spoiler)[the killer taking eyes was revealed, I wasn't expecting my first guess of psychic to also come into play. Fun though! I loved the TV series Medium when it ran...

So glad that Eve finally took the step of trusting Peabody... and yeah, I noticed how often Eve said something like "women need to stop walking alone through parks at night" and "why are folks still doing this?" and then Peabody goes and does it... but it was outside her own apartment, literally outside, that she got tackled... glad she bloodied him. Oh, and also cool to see what @Iain hinted at earlier--about Eve's ability to get in a killer's mind having an edge of sensitive...

Finished #19 Visions in Death--Loved the twist at the end! Eve is awesome for catching it.

Also just thinking about the excessive amount of serial killers Eve ends up dealing with. I know it makes for a more thriller-style detective story, but I'd be curious to see a book where there is only one murder, and Eve spends her time looking into the possibilities for it alone... have we had one with only one murder yet?

Also, naming the young black boy Madinga is irksome; it is way too close to "Mandingo" for comfort!

I hear ya... However, I hate the negative connotation that the word Mandingo has here in the US... Since I was raised in Europe, I learned of the Mandingo as a West African people, and their music... I don't have that negative reaction to that name... And as far as I know, that was also artificially created with a racist movie from 1915... Kind of like the circling native Americans trope of attack - it was created by Hollywood, because it was the easiest way to capture an attack on camera...

Madinga is usually a family name, again mostly in Africa and the Caribbean... But I get it that she could have chosen any name and she went with something that might bring cringy associations...

Actually, I think it's best for both parties for her to go with another family, because the lady was right - consciously or not, they will always blame her for surviving, while their daughter didn't. In Death #20 - Surviver in Death ... Finished and as always, wasn't disappointed at all. Robb is always capable of playing with my heartstrings and yes, when she adds one of those kids, I am a putty in her hands... I liked the connections with the old case too. Another great entry in the series!

I've been watching a bit of TV, lately... but I've mostly managed to limit myself to while eating and before bed... I think I took one day to just watch TV after work, after the power outage a week or 2 ago...

I've read 141 books, 51k pages, and 1478hrs (61 days) of audio this year, already...

I'm on a real uptick... I haven't read this much since 2020 I don't think... and then, I was reading even more, because I was also able to read for 4-6hrs/day at work...

This year, I've managed to read 482-563 pages per day each month...
Last year, I went as low as 226 and as high as 443, but most months were more in the 300 page range (275-325)...
2021 was similar, from 263 (twice) to 437 per day...
2020 was my first 3x audio speed year, and I went from 800-900 pages in January/February/March to 600-700 in April/May/June to 100-350 the rest of the year... my spreadsheet says I only read 6 books in October 2020... GR agrees... that might be the slowest reading month I've had since at least 2016...

Geez! I'm in average of 200 pages a day plus minus... Break from time to time from reading to do different things (playing, drawing, painting, jewellery making, not forgetting work and house keeping stuff :))

3x speed audio helps cut those 60 days of audio down to 20... altho, some books I still do/did at 2.5x speed, maybe even 2x speed...

And the 141 books is a BIT of an inflated number... I'm reading most of the short fiction in between BRs... the ones for In Death, Jack Nightingale, did nearly a dozen Penric novellas, the Sun Eater novellas... October Daye short stories start soon, and I might go back and do Dark Hunterverse... but it's generally balanced with some toms...

My actual breakdown for 2023 is 9/28/94/10...
That's 9 short stories under 100 pages, 28 novellas between 100-249 pages, 94 books between 250-599 pages, and 10 tomes at 600+ pages... longest being The Wandering Inn: Book 8 - Blood of Liscor at 1684 pages...
