Finished #12 Betrayal in Death. Was it just me, or was there a lot fewer fun character scenes in this one? This one left me with a bit of a weak impression--mostly murder tracking and Roarke's connections, but not much in the funny bits I really enjoy.

I really enjoyed seeing Eve come down on the incompetent FBI agents, but it also made me sad--I feel like every police procedural series always has inter-departmental rivalry and f-ups... I'd like to see the opposite some day... really helpful (and not turn out to be bad-guys) crossover departments working together...

Going to read one other short and come back for 12.5...

Just finished Betrayal in Death #12... Wow! I thought it was excellent! A bit of heist, a bit of mystery and a whole lot of MacNab and Peabody being stupid in their relationship! Stupid and absolutely adorable, mostly because we are looking at them and are not in their shoes. I imagine if I was one of them, I would be just as emotionally angsty as they are:)))

About the murders... (view spoiler)[ They were brutal! I was so angry when I found out that this horror was perpetrated as a distraction, I wanted to kill the killer with my own two hands! Not that there is ever a good reason for such, but this seemed like an extra waste of lives!!! Just heartbreaking for both victims.

Mic, gosh, I was disappointed with him, but it is where Roarke comes from and I understand why he was willing to let him go. Mic didn't deserve to go the way he did and I thought JDR did a great job ending his storyline.

As far as the masterminds are concerned, is this the first time we end the book without catching everyone responsible? And I am going to try to remember their names, so as to see if we ever get back to them. I want them caught and paying for sicking that monster on innocent people! I was pissed, by the way, that the monster offed himself and didn't get to go through some public humiliation, which I think he would have suffered from the most... (hide spoiler)]

Also, the scene with Eve fighting with the candy dispensing AI, calling it a thief and saying that Rourke was only encouraging it to keep on thieving if he gave it more money, was absolutely hilarious! Same with her panicking and saying "I told you so!", when Peabody and MacNab started fighting and it carried over into the job...

I am jumping into the short story right away:)

I am about a quarter of the way through Seduction in Death. It's an interesting and very disturbing case.

I am fascinated by Eve's deduction skills and instinct to already catch on to what only the audience knows so far. I am eager to learn how this investigation will conclude!

I am tired of Peabody & McNab now. They need to get over themselves. And while I put the responsibility for the start of this mess on McNab, I blame Peabody for its continuing. Enough is enough already.

The only In Death books I bought there previously were the ones re-recorded to include the distinct Eve and Peabody voices missing the first time round (14-17, I think)...

Finished Interlude in Death #12.5 This was short and to the point... I am surprised that we don't get more investigations off of planet. This should be more than just a passing mention in the books, in my opinion.

The local cop was pretty awesome! The murder investigation was OK, but too brash and reckless, if you ask me. I guess she was going with a crime of revenge, but due to zealous beliefs, so despite it being planned, it was not well thought out... I always feel bad for people, whose whole belief system crumbles in front of them...

Starting Seduction in Death #13 ... That beginning chapter of her dream/memory, was messed up...

For those missing the context, I’m living out of a hotel for the next 7-10 days while my apartment is dried out and the ceiling is torn down and the insulation is replaced… either upstairs neighbor overflowed bathtub for 3hrs, or pipe burst (other longtime neighbor thinks the bathtub story is fake to avoid culpability… the water main was turned off to the whole building for a few hours…)

I chronicled this a bit in Random Chatter the last few days…

Got my PC running in storage space today, and I have all my BRs for the month on there, except the In Death books and the Darkhunterverse books (have the first one prepped)…

Should be back in my place next week, I hope…

Somewhat of a spoiler about a dissatisfying resolution:

This notion that men and women can't be friends is demeaning, disingenuous, diminishing (to the characters in question), and somewhat dangerous - Hence the fist fight.

I think it comes with insecurity in one's relationship... When I was in a committed relationship, I was never jealous or suspicious, but if I was in a relationship where nothing was clearly stated, I felt insecure and questioned myself and my partner... I still have faith that once they actually have a conversation, all those ridiculous reactions will fade away...

About the trope you are talking about - I second Iain. And just think about it, if you have this type of conversation with someone in your life, would you really believe them? I personally would totally think that individual is just weird and has a bit too big of an ego. I will be one of those that would not believe it could happen to me...

Finished Seduction in Death #13... It was (view spoiler)[ disappointing that neither one of the monsters got actual justice. Funny, I usually get angry that people like them get to live a full life, even behind bars, while their victims are dead and buried. However, when the murders are especially heinous, I want them going through the whole humiliating process of everyone learning about what they have done and being judged by the law and public opinion... When they self terminate, or even in the case of Kevin get killed in a very none-painful way, I feel like the world has been cheated... I feel horrible for Luscious' mother, because it is horrible to have to admit to yourself that the child you had done everything to conceive and raise, is a monster...

McNab and Peabody finally seem to have decided to actually date! Let's hope they both get a bit better at this:))

Overall, I still loved it. I sound a bit like a broken record, but these books are very good as far as plotting and execution goes. Trina is killing me every time! "That hair is mine since the moment I put my hands on it!", hahaha! I love every time she shows up:)

I think how early in the story the sex starts is an indication of how often it’ll happen jn the book… not every instance is as detailed… 1) they’re still generally newlyweds because the timeline is so tight, and 2) Roarke likes to use sex to push away Eve’s bad memories/nightmares/work stress…

Exception being stories like the subliminal music DJ, where the sex is part of the main plot…

Nyssa, I think this series is perfectly written for it to be a weekly TV series. However, I don't know if it could be done well... I always think about the Stephanie Plumb books, by Janet Evanovich. I read the first 10 books, I think, another series I have to re-read in order to catch up with. It has great characters and is the closest in feel to the In Death series, written in the beginning of the 2000's, just a bit lighter. The chick from Gray's Anatomy, Katherine Heigle, bought the rights to the books and made the first book into a movie... It was Ok, but she herself was all wrong for casting in that character, her love interests were all wrong, it just didn't work out at all... They should have gone with series on TV, not movies, and it just fizzled out.. Kind of a shame. So I don't know if they should even try with this one...

I've wanted to try the Stephanie Plumb series for a while now but was overwhelmed by the number of books. It should be a cakewalk now after this, though - LOL.
Maybe set that series for another Buddy Read Challenge starting late 2023 / early 2024 like we did this one?

Peabody gets sorted out in this book, Seduction, and I think the series is smooth sailing from here on out… I’m not a fan of the angst either… almost done with my Seduction reread… this one had a nice Summerset/Eve moment… multiple if you include the bannister scene early on :D

Summerset and Eve's dynamics are awesome! In the last book, she was so worried about him! I think her and Roark forget that he is a tough cookie, not just the Majordomo of the household... It is so heartwarming, the three of them caring about each other and trying to pretend like they don't. Also, I really like the reverse trope of the gruff, bad with words dude and the emotional and loquacious chick. Here she is all no nonsense and as little words as possible, while he is eloquent and wears his heart on his sleeve. Love it!

Starting #13 Seduction in Death--there was one line right at the start which caught with me--doing my best in memory here--she could see her own breath, panting, little ghosts that told her she was still alive...

Yikes what an opening though. The terror never really leaves her, it can rear up in silent moments and drag her to battle. I do love that it shows how much of a fighter Eve is--she doesn't back down, she doesn't give in, and every inch is earned.
