Eve just had a talk with Charles about his relationship with Peabody, and none too soon, if you ask me. They had to work through this and I am glad they did!

I felt the same--but I also had a hard time keeping everyone straight! And it just keeps getting more and more twisted...

First, Young ILI, as Nyssa dubbed McNabb, asking Roark for advice on women, and that whole conversation between the two of them, had me laughing all morning!
Second, the cologne Feeny's wife gave him as a present - THE BEST EVER!!!! Him avoiding elevators and having to do steps just so he doesn't stay close to people who have a sense of smell at all, it was just comedy gold! Especially when Peabody ended the scene with "I think I am going to have a crunchy salad now", or something like that , hahaha!
Also, this is the first book we hear about the candy thief, right?

But yeah, that conversation between McNab & Roarke, in particular, made me LOL

I don't remember the Candy thief.
I finally started #9 today! >.<

I really loved the Agatha Christie style plot too! Lots of laughs in this one!

Hah! Roarke just gave the cultural lesson. Yay Roarke! And I love how Eve is like "Greek? Greektown is all the way on the other side of the city." Plebian!

I forgot to mention the first ride Mira had with Eve. The description of the parking barrier squeaking in terror and leaping out of the way was so real and Mira's exhale of "Well, that was exciting!" , while Eve has no idea what she was talking about, was just so telling!:)))

There was also the Oklahoma City Bombing in 95... apparently Loyalty was published in 99? That's the bombing I remember the most, up until 9/11...

I forgot to mention the first..."
LOL Don't let Eve drive...

Just found these comments! I was thinking of the movie "9 months" and was confused for a bit... I have neither seen nor heard of 9 1/2 weeks... and now I'm both curious and a little scared to check it out... I do remember seeing those shove-against-the-wall-passionate-kissing scenes around a lot though... not healthy to raise kids on that y'all...

That earlier visit to New Jersey was interesting and disturbing... still, it brought up one interesting point--parenthood, and motherhood especially, is seriously taken for granted in most societies... it takes a lot of work and stress to raise a child--each kid is like another full time job! I have great respect for people who make that choice... I am way to jealous of my "me-time" to do that. I wish there were more benefits and recognition for parents...

I love the concept in the In Death world, of professional parenthood. You apply that you want to be just a parent devoted to raising children, and you get paid for it. I think it's something governments should really look into if they want more adjusted humans...

Cheering you on Monika! We will stagger across those finish lines together!

Hah! Yay! Yeah, I've often thought that about professional parenthood--you see it in some other books too--there's some in the Vorkosigan universe, in Ethan of Athos, and also in the Becky Chambers Wayfarer books--I think the Aeluon people? And then (also in the Vorkosigan saga) there's planets where in order to have children you need to first apply for a license... sometimes I've thought that wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Sorry I haven't been around much, outside of "In Death Day, Tuesday/Wednesday"... between my minor mod duties, all my umpteen BRs, and taking advantage of a lull for a few days to read some non-BRs, I feel like I'm always busy, maybe spread a bit thin...
I really liked #10, the audacity of the public murder, and how much the author played into the actors playing roles...

Just joined Chirp (audiobook site)... #17, Imitation in Death, is only $4 for the next 10 days...

I actually installed an OS update & app updates, and the Chirp app to my audiobook player, before starting...
Just started now, an hour later... I like (have always liked) how each book includes 2 kinda relevant quotes, usually from classics like Shakespeare or Sir Francis Bacon... I wonder how they search out the more obscure quotes...
I found one of the quotes in #11 funny tho...
"More things belong to marriage than 4 bare legs in a bed." -- John Haywood...

Emily, I laughed like an insane person when I read that from Nirkatze! We, GenX-ers, were really marked by our upbringing, but I guess that's true for all generations in their specific ways:)))

Hah! This was just me wanting to blame my lack of relationship success on the unrealistic depictions of romance in movies aired during my impressionable youth....

Overall very enjoyable!

So true! I love how the twists were very classic, and I didn't see that coming either! It's also interesting having the whole victim/murderer dynamic flipped too...

OH wow, you're right I think! Somehow I doubt it will be the last... lol

I love Peabody's healthy sex drive... she's always good for a laugh--"what's the problem with seeing two guys? NOTHING!" Of course, if that was gender flopped, it'd feel kinda gross and skeevy, so maybe I shouldn't find her so refreshing?

Peabody's situation is fun and acceptable because they are consenting adults, and we know all parties involved. Despite (view spoiler) small fits of jealousy, Peabody has been open and honest about the relationships with both men. I'm also pretty sure that if one or the other requested to be monogamous, she would consider the situation and make a decision.

********************************
I started Betrayal in Death (Book #12) yesterday evening.
I was going to post one of my thoughts on a character but changed my mind. It was a snap judgment.
With all of his suaveness, Roarke felt a little testier than usual at the beginning of this one.
And the prologue felt brutal - so I'm wondering if I am reading correctly or just being moody.
I'm a quarter of the way through the story (reading chapter 6). I'm curious to know if we've met the culprit yet.

Finished that one! I honestly did not guess who it was at first, but I think if I had been paying attention better I would have gotten it :D
And yeah I agree with your assessment about Peabody!
Mavis had a great scene in this one too! (view spoiler)

It's easy to grow annoyed with characters... it's what started grating on me after 30-40 books... some character traits/tropes...

LOL I loved that bit! And how her commentary on the play was all from a police perspective, and very different from an entertainment-consumer's take.
Nadine & Eve's relationship is very interesting--their work can be mutually beneficial, but also hostile--I thought Eve jumped too hard on Mira and Mira smacked her down properly for the Nadine bit. Eve's definitely got several paranoid bones that need their corners smoothed.
