SOLVED. Monster in lake/pond. Gory.. Due to pollution [s]

Trying to remember the name of a book I read many years ago (1980s). The story surrounds a mysterious monster in a lake/pond killing folk off - pretty gory. Ends up being due to industrial pollution of the lake mutating creatures in it.

Think the book had a 1-word title.

I'm pretty sure the book had a long, single-word title. This is driving me crazy!!
