First of all, I want to acknowledge the genius Fredrik Backman is for his books, and especially the Beartown trilogy. Wonderfully written characters, storylines, and lessons to take away.

One thing I wished we had more of were interactions of Benji and Maya, and although we got a good amount in The Winners, their relationship was certainly something I wished was more examined, given that he, Kevin's best friend, took her side after her rape and how much that led to her admiring Benji for the caring person he is. I have been skimming through all three books again trying to piece together their friendship and I can't seem to pinpoint the moment where Maya realizes the vulnerability and kindness he possesses that she describes in the songs she wrote for and about him.

It's evident that she cares about him a lot and wants the best in him, but does anyone recall if there a scene from the trilogy in which she makes this realization? I'm pretty sure it's somewhere between him covering for her for the broken school mirror in Beartown and when she gives him her song at the station at the end of Us Against You, but I can't recall the particular moment, if there is one.

Hi!

To be honest, I'm not quite sure that there was a particular moment, but for me it was the part where Maya tells him not to show his tears to them bastards. And they took the school by the storm together after that.
Like, she sees that he's going through something similar at the moment. And with his question he shows that he really understands what hell she's been through.

I think maybe the fact that they were both hated, at some point, by the people in their town brought them together. So they could kinda understand what the other person was going through… being an outsider
