Throughout the story, we gain insight about the Orphan program and Evan’s trainer and mentor, Jack Johns. We also learn why Evan left the program and how Jack was killed. What was your belief about the program…was it government sanctioned or something else? Was Jack truly Evan’s protector?

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments To me it felt like this was a government sanctioned, off-the-books program. They were finding these orphans and making them into contract killers. The government would tell them who to kill and most would do it without question.

I don't know that Jack was really Evan's protector. To me he was a father figure that Evan never had.

~Melissa~ | 429 comments I feel like it was originally government sanctioned when Evan was first trained. I don't feel as if we know everything yet regarding the Orphan program. I feel as if somewhere along the way the rules changed with the program. I totally understood why Evan wanted out.
How much of Jack was trying to protect himself and how much was protecting Evan hard to say but I do feel like he sees Evan as a son.

I first thought it was government sanctioned but after Jack was “killed,” I was on the fence about it. Contract killing of activists and other Orphans had me questioning what it really was.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments Yes, Robin, I was with you at that point in the story.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I thought it was a part of some "secret society" with government backing. It started my conspiracy theory brain thinking.
