Don't think it was the main character, but definitely there's a character who has been there for many years living off an inheritance allowance while studying.

While I can't remember the main storyline of the book that I'm trying to remember, I do recall that it was definitely science fiction.
The writing style was kind of Heinlein-esque.

I'll dig through my books and see if I still have my old copy.
The main character is a college senior in his late 20s/early 30s. The terms of his grandfather's will guaranteed to cover his tuition and an allowance for reasonable living costs until he completed his bachelor's degree, provided that he maintained a full-time class schedule and passing grades.
At the point that the story starts, the MC has been an undergrad student for over a decade and has taken 90-something percent of the classes in every discipline in the school's undergrad course catalog and switched majors dozens of times in order to avoid meeting the requirements to matriculate.
As I recall, I read the book about 10 to 15 years ago, but I have no idea of the publication date, so it might be much older.
