25.5 - Nikki's Task: A Viking Pillage

Like a lot of raiders in history, the Viking were known for their fondness for pillaging and taking things that didn't belong to them. So for this task, read a book with something in the title and/or subtitle that is worthy of being pillaged, nicked, pinched, stolen or misappropriated.

A few boundaries :

* It must be tangible so no things like souls, ghosts, virtues or mythical creatures.
* No humans or human-form things, so nothing like girls, kings, zombies or vampires.
* Animals, food, possessions, etc. do work, but no brand names or proper nouns. We all live in different places so while I would happily pillage a truck full of Tim-Tams, most of you don't know what chocolately heaven that would be so its makes no sense.
* The item must be moveable and able to fit on a truck. Cars and even trucks are ok, but no buildings. Yes, a house can sort of fit on a truck, but its no quick getaway.
* It must be something of value, so no twigs, air, dirt, etc. A reasonable person wouldn't be upset if dirt was stolen.
* It must be a specific item with its own value, not a general collective term like treasure or snacks.
* Plurals and possessives work.

You can read 1 or 2 books, but the page total must be at least 500 pages.

NOTE: ebooks without print versions cannot be used for tasks requiring a specific number of pages. If you read an ebook or audiobook use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.

Required: Identify the item(s) and the page counts.

Morgan (faeriesfolly) | 923 comments Gave me one of the books that I was hoping I could fit this season... (and I'm actually going to keep two books so I can finish out a trilogy I started in Winter)

https://www.goodreads.com/series/9829... (Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald...sounds like some good plunder to me! lol)

Fun task/idea!

Cait S | 738 comments I think this works but I should probably double check. Would "knife" be considered an item valuable enough to steal?

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness

Edit to add: Super awesome task, by the way! I absolutely love it.

message 10: by Kim (new)

Kim | 764 comments Interesting task. Would any of these work?

A Burnable Book (book being the worthy item)

Light a Penny Candle (penny or candle)

Wine of Violence (wine)

Rock Paper Tiger (rock or paper or tiger)

Thanks.

message 11: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments Would any foods work that are non brand name- ie butter? Would the word food qualify a title or would it need to be a specific food item? Thanks!

message 12: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis | 166 comments Just for clarification...
Would any (or all) of these work?

The Lifeboat (lifeboat)

Defending Turquoise (turquoise, the gem, but out of context as the title is referring to a girl)

Beneath the Mask of Sanity (mask)

Angie (pinkindle) | 587 comments Would A Feast for Crows work? Crows could be stolen, and so could a feast if you're the Grinch. :P

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments Great task! (and I'd totally pillage some Tim-Tams)

I've not yet tackled Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone (that's the copy of the book I'd be using, the Penguin edition has the better description of the Moonstone in it's GR blurb) - basically a giant, cursed diamond (the diamond is named the Moonstone). Might this work for pillaging? :) (and at 510 pages, I can do the one book option, right?)

Drums are fine :)

If you walk and don't run with the knife its fine to take off with it, and thanks :)

All would work though I think i would prefer the paper and tiger to the rock, the wine on the other hand [insert drunk emoji]

Yes they all work and funnily enough when planning the task i tried to include for context like that but it just became a nightmare to describe and then moderate so just looking at the words now.

message 24: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Angie wrote: "Would A Feast for Crows work? Crows could be stolen, and so could a feast if you're the Grinch. :P"

Id take the feast over the crows!. Its a noun, we know what it is, it fits onto a truck and I'd happily have it shipped to my house :)

Silk is well worthy of a pillage

Oooh you were my first Google and as a moonstone is a gem in its own right this is fine for the task !. Enjoy - perhaps with a tim-tam :)

Its a yes to Diamonds and Toads: A Modern Fairy Tale but a no to Letters To My Husband. Letters just don't have a financial value, aren't generally bought and sold and are not useful so wouldnt be on a pillagers list.

Yes books with childrens in the main genres are fine as long as they meet the ratings requirement.

I would love a throne! Definitely worth a pillage.

Nikki Dee wrote: "Btw - I'd totally pillage Tim-tam's"

I know right !. Even in real life - a dark lane, no-one around and an unlocked truckload of chocolately heaven. I think I'd definitely get let off "..but your Honour, they were Tim-Tams". No jury would convict !.

message 44: by Diane L (new)

Diane L Can the pillaged item be something as generic as 'treasure'?

message 45: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Diane L wrote: "Can the pillaged item be something as generic as 'treasure'?"

Unfortunately no. Speaking on behalf of all Vikings, everything we take is treasure but it becomes treasure AFTER we steal it, before that it needs to be a specfic item with its own value.

Good pickup though, i'll get the task updated.

message 46: by Teri-K (new)

Teri-K Great idea for a task. :) I had no idea how few books I read have specific nouns in the title till I looked.

I'm assuming "tea" works as a food stuff. Besides it was considered quite valuable at one time, and kept under lock and key.

What about "iron" or "steel"? (I don't know which one in the series I want to read.) They could melt it down and make useful things with it...

Steel, iron and tea all work. Also I like tea and there is an element of "Things Nikki likes" to this task :)

message 49: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Fiona (Titch) wrote: "Can I read The Silver Chain - Primula Bond (has 400 pages)?"

Yes, you would obviously need to read another book as well but the words silver and chain both work.

message 50: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) (titch) | 117 comments I was reading The Silver Chain - Primula Bond (has 400 pages) & Diamonds and Toads: A Modern Fairy Tale - K.E. Saxon (has 246 pages).

You'd already authorised 2nd book previously x
