Although I'm here in the UK, my technical ability may not come up to scratch :( - so I certainly would appreciate a buddy read thread :)
NB: I was reading the whole series to my daughters (in the 70's) as they were published :)
I don't know yet if it's as easy as pressing play on the website, but podcasts are generally very easy to use! We'll surely know more in December :)
So excited to see this. Hope I can listen from Australia. This was THE book that got me into fantasy as a kid.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w13x...The episode schedule is now up! It has two times, one for Americas and the Caribbean, and one for everyone else. I think this means it's available worldwide?
This will start in two days! I've edited this into a buddy read thread, in case anyone wants to talk about the book or the adaptation :)
Why didn't I add the podcast to my phone?! Thanks for pointing out what should've been obvious to me! :DIt's really hard to imagine listening to this without having read the book. I'm not saying you can't, but I've read it so many times and was almost confused at first.
I've never read the book and it wasn't available on scrib'd so I'm going into the podcast 'cold'.
Interesting!Let's use spoiler tags when needed, and also when/if discussing something that's in the book but not in the adaptation! I don't know yet if that will be the case, but it could be :)
I am loving the theme song ... "The dark, the dark is riiiisiing" is kind of stuck in my head now.
No deep thoughts about the story thus far. It is a pretty tropey opening, but I don't mind.
episode 2

I just caught episode 3 this morning (when I happened to be awake at 3:30 am listening to BBC world service). Very intriguing and mysterious! I've never read the book(s), but they seem like something I would have eaten up as a young reader. I'll go back to the first episode and then follow along at more reasonable times of the day.
I've been trying to remember how old I was when I first read these, and I think I would've been around Will's age, elevenish, and hadn't read tons of fantasy, so it was all very new and cool :)
Genre Wars observation: BC the audience is young the mc doesn't have to puzzle out his path. I mean he has to walk it. But he is pretty easily told what he needs to do, which lowers the stakes for the reader/listener.
Audio Compliments: I've consumed many audio narratives, and this one is definitely well done. The in stereo bits add suspense/fear and the story is perfectly comprehensible even though I don't know the source material.
episode 3 "The dark. The dark is riiisiing."
PS: Snowed at my home ... nothing to worry about here :)

The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper has been adapted into a "real time" audio drama, starting on December 20th, 2022. I think it's available globally?
"The Dark Is Rising will be released as a podcast and linear-broadcast on BBC World Service in 12 daily episodes, beginning on 20 December, with each episode corresponding to the ‘real time’ of the novel’s unfolding. It is recorded partly in binaural sound, which gives listeners using headphones a unique immersive experience. The Dark Is Rising will be an advent calendar like no other - and a remarkable audio event for families and all ages alike worldwide."
If anyone wants to read this in time with the audio drama, and discuss it, I will convert this into a buddy read thread :)
This is one of my favorite childhood fantasy series, and this is by far my favorite book in the series. And yes, you can start here, you don't have to read book 1 first. It's very short though, so if you want to, you can. There are different protagonists, so you could absolutely read this first, then go back to book 1 if you want to continue the series. Book 1 is lower on the fantasy, and there's only one tiny detail you *might* want to know before book 2, but even that is explained in this book, so it's not really necessary.
I love how we have more and more of these daily reads in the style of A Night in the Lonesome October and Dracula! :)
