Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments It was my understanding from this group that records from BookFunnel were invalid, but more and more I'm encountering such records with librarian notes (and most of those notes by super-librarians) that say that such records are indeed valid and to not NAB them (don't worry, I didn't) and they cite this portion of the manual sometimes saying it doesn't apply to BookFunnel: "Stories only available via subscription to a newsletter, or via a website that requires registration" source https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...

Bookfunnel is not a newsletter subscription and does not require registration (making an account) but it does ask for an e-mail address to deliver the book. My question is are they valid or not?

L J | 625 comments Authors can make books available through BookFunnel without requiring email address. It's possible what you are seeing are some of those.

When BookFunnel asks for email address the address is for author use not Bookfunnel but it enables the author to send email to recipient of book. Authors may call those emails updates, announcements, etc. instead of newletters but I don't know if term used matters or not.

The ones I've seen they ALL required e-mail address to receive and there's still a note that says it meets GR criteria and not to delete/nab. I actually went to BookFunnel and checked.

When I've used BookFunnel I have always been asked for an email but they don't always subscribe you to something and it gives you a choice, sometimes there's a box you can check so that it subscribes you to a newsletter but if you don't check it then you are not subscribed, and when it asks email alone I never receive anything else. I think it depends on the author (they must set it to be a certain way) and I didn't know BookFunnel allowed download without email because I've never encountered those personally. Still those records I've seen on Goodreads they all required an e-mail address. Well, I guess then only those that do not require email at all would meet criteria.

BookFunnel downloads not requiring email seem pretty rare.

Like you I don't understand why the ones you are finding are exceptions to the rule and wish to know the reason.

Emily | 17517 comments I have encountered a few through working on them here that do (or did) not require anything to read the story, so I may have left a note or two. Those are indeed rare.
Perhaps some of them were freely available at one time and have since changed (in which case we would still leave them).

Thanks, Emily. I wondered if that might be what was happening.

Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments It's alright (I know we aren't allowed to name any names, but I guess it would be ok to say I haven't see any notes from you Emily hehe). Actually that makes sense (that they once did not require an e-mail address to read) I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for clearing that up.
