His journey leads him to the Mulders who first take him in as their farmhand and then as their son. Tom matures, works along with Jacob on the farm, spends a tour of duty in Vietnam and finds his true love, but can't quite forget the injustice done to him and his sister Catherine by their adoptive parents. Returning home to take his frustrations out on his adoptive father, he finds he's arrived too late. Gerrit is already near death from a freak accident in the barn. The police track Tom's movements and he's later charged with Gerrit's murder. After Tom’s acquittal, his sister Catherine relates her story of visiting their former home. She assures Tom that she would have come forward if he had been found guilty. In the end, both siblings learn to forgive and live the rest of their lives in service to others.
