Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2303 comments Ok firstly a question.

Is the title on the cover of your audiobook Yeats Reads His Own Work or William Butler Yeats Reads his own work. (World Cat has it both ways)

& the 'cover' you have linked to isn't a cover - it is an image World Cat uses when they don't have a cover. & we aren't allowed to use World Cat for covers in any case. Used to be able to, but they asked us not to a few years ago.

Joe (symphony_red) | 377 comments The images uses lower case, "William Butler Yeats reads his own work", but the library catalog entry uses capitals:
https://kcls.bibliocommons.com/v2/rec...

Which is what Audible does:
https://www.amazon.com/William-Butler...

My library's image, which while the audiobook is ultimately delivered by Overdrive, apparently comes from elsewhere. The library page again:
https://kcls.bibliocommons.com/v2/rec...
And that image:
https://cor-liv-cdn-static.bibliocomm...

The World Cat page used to point an image similar to the KCLS library image, but I guess in the 7 months since the original posting they changed it to a placeholder. You can see this by clicking on the "just the image" link above -- it was the image World Cat used at the time.

Hi Joe
Goodreads has it's own standards for book titles. Thanks for confirming

I can't use Audible information as they are considered different formats on Goodreads.

I should be able to use your library's issue, but I want to check that Overdrive isn't a problem.

Sorry for the hold ups - I generally don't do audiobook/audible adds, but jumped in this time because you have been waiting such a long time.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2303 comments Sorry I have just heard back from the Super I asked & we can't use Overdrive as a source. So I can't add this. Sorry about that.

Joe (symphony_red) | 377 comments None of the images or information I provided is served by Overdrive.

Unfortunately it is this phrase you used.

"My library's image, which while the audiobook is ultimately delivered by Overdrive, apparently comes from elsewhere. The library page again...

which is the problem. The Super tried to find info on the publisher's site but was unable to do so.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2303 comments I've added this audible edition from Amazon. I hope this will be a satisfactory alternative.

It will probably take at least half an hour to be searchable (much) longer if you are using the app, but here it is for now.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Added requested book without cover.

Combined with Audible edition added above.

Joe (symphony_red) | 377 comments You do see that the image the library using is not the Overdrive image, right?

Joe (symphony_red) | 377 comments https://www.overdrive.com/media/59911...

Overdrive's image:
https://img1.od-cdn.com/ImageType-400...

That is, the domain name for Overdrive images is od-cdn.com

I think you will need to wait for a ruling from the moderator, Joe. (She is staff)

Sorry for the delay here. As previously stated by Rivka, Overdrive is unfortunately not a site we can use for book covers or other book data. This means that editions with ISBNs specific to Overdrive should not be added to the catalog.

Does that mean that when a member has a book from Overdrive they can't copy from the edition they have? And publishers have these on their website even when they serve only Overdrive, can those not be used?

I can see the restriction as to covers where Overdrive might have the copyright to those images, and descriptions, but all else too? The other details are facts which cannot be copyrighted.

It seems that this has been in place as a copyright issue, due to Overdrive's terms of use. So, if the ISBN is available on a publisher's page, that is acceptable (see Rivka's comment here).

So if a user has the book it can't be used? We've always been able to use covers and other data when we have the book. Yes, I realize this is borrowed material, but if I borrowed a hardcover from my library and scanned the cover I would be able to use it. Why not Overdrive data in one's own possession?

Elizabeth (Alaska) I'm sorry, Jaclyn, I don't want to sound argumentative. I'm just having a hard time believing what I'm understanding so thinking I might be understanding incorrectly.

So ... also asking about Overdrive editions that are already on Goodreads. What about them? Are they invalid?

It's against the terms and conditions of Overdrive to use the data from what I can tell. Overdrive just provides a license to read the book rather than copies of the book to the libraries, so I thought that was why.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Emily wrote: "Overdrive just provides a license to read the book rather than copies of the book to the libraries,"

Ah, OK.

When I borrow, it is the Kindle edition, so that's what I shelve. And to make a confession, I wouldn't know how to take a photo of a digital cover, but these questions were just in case I should decide to respond to a user request.

message 28: by Emily (new)

Emily | 17516 comments Since publishers dictate the rules by which their books can be lent through ebook lenders, they are very restrictive and expensive. :( Such as "only one library patron can read a given 'copy' of a book at one time" and "after 26 checkouts the license expires and you have to buy a new one."
That's why it is all about licensing and not actual book copies. :-/

message 29: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Mar 27, 2023 10:38AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Interesting - and thank you. I know our local Friends of the Library pays for our Overdrive privileges, but our library accesses Overdrive through the Alaska State Consortium. So it might be pooled resources.

Also, I notice that some things I have shelved as Overdrive are no longer available through them. So they used up their license or gave it up to apply elsewhere maybe?

message 30: by Emily (new)

Emily | 17516 comments It means the license expired/is used up, which is either due to exceeding the number of checkouts allowed or years allowed (usually one or two).
If you wanted to read something no longer there they would probably repurchase it upon request.
There are thousands of books that do not have restrictions however, and their license is purchased for perpetual use.
