8 didn't update for this one because it felt a bit too *smart* for me and I wanted to focus on following the story. That being said, the way that it ends makes me *need* to get to the second book

Cool to hear that the ending is good, sounds super promising. I'm super excited to read this but I just remembered that my irl book club is reading this book in February and I want it to be fresh in my head so I'm gonna hold off reading until January. I read a bit of the first chapter and I really liked the writing so I'm excited.

Yeah, this is not a book you should take too long in between I think..

60 pages in and I'm struggling to get into this book. Lots of world info dumps and we haven't really gotten to know the characters. I don't feel invested at all. Will give it a few more chapters to get interesting.
chapter 11, about 100 pages in. Gonna dnf this one. I don't care about the characters and their political situations, so it's just feeling like a slog. Sad, I had high hopes.

Iraya has spent her life in a cell, but every day brings her closer to freedom - and vengeance.
Jazmyne is the Queen’s daughter, but unlike her sister before her, she has no intention of dying to strengthen her mother’s power.
Sworn enemies, these two witches enter a precarious alliance to take down a mutual threat. But power is intoxicating, revenge is a bloody pursuit, and nothing is certain - except the lengths they will go to win this game.
This Jamaican-inspired fantasy debut about two enemy witches who must enter into a deadly alliance to take down a common enemy has the twisted cat-and-mouse of Killing Eve with the richly imagined fantasy world of Furyborn and Ember in the Ashes.
